Installing Nokia Network Bridge

Nokia Network Bridge is bridging software that includesthe necessary drivers (RNDIS) for IP passthrough. You candownload the latest version of Nokia Network Bridge fromthe Nokia site at www.nokia.com.

To install Nokia Network Bridge:

1 Double-click the downloaded exe file.

2 Read and accept the license agreement, and click Nextto continue.

3 If necessary, change the destination folder, and clickNext to continue.

4 If the installation program detects newer driver files onyour computer than those in the installation package,select to use the new files.

5 Once the installation is complete, click Finish. 6 To check the installation, open Control Panel, andcheck that Nokia Network Bridge is listed.

EnablingIPpassthrough


Enabling IP passthrough

By default, the data cable connection between your deviceand your computer is used for Nokia PC Suite. To be ableto use IP passthrough, you must allocate the data cableconnection for IP passthrough.

To enable IP passthrough:

1 Press Desk, and select ToolsControl panel

ConnectionsCable setup.2 Change the value of the Data cable modefield to eitherof the following: IP passthrough The data cable connection is used

solely for IP passthrough. If you select this option,you cannot use PC Suite through the data cableconnection.

IP passthrough overrides PC Suite The data cableconnection can be used for PC Suite and IPpassthrough. If you select this option, your PC Suiteconnection is terminated if an IP passthrough isopened when you have an active PC Suiteconnection. Once the IP passthrough connection is

closed, the PC Suite connection can be used again asusual.

3 Press Done. You are asked for confirmation.

4 Press Save to save your changes.

Connecting your device to the computer

Before you connect your device to the computer, makesure you do the following:

Install Nokia Network Bridge. Enable IP passthrough on your device.

Tip: For best performance, connect yourdevice to the computer immediately after

enabling IP passthrough.Connect your device to the computer for the first timeafter you install Nokia Network Bridge and enable IPpassthrough to start the RNDIS driver installation. Thedriver is included with Nokia Network Bridge and installedwith the Windows Found New Hardware Wizard.

Note: The following instructions follow theprocess on a computer with Windows XP SP2.The process may differ slightly for Windows2000 and other Windows XP versions.

To connect your device to the computer:

1 Connect your Nokia 9300 or Nokia 9500

Communicator to your computer with a DKU-2 datacable.

2 When Windows detects your device, it starts the FoundNew Hardware Wizard. Select No, not this time, andclick Next to continue.

3 Select Install the software automatically, and click

Next. 4 When Windows displays the Hardware Installationwindow, click Continue Anyway.

Creating a bridge

When you connect your Nokia 9300 or Nokia 9500Communicator to your computer with a data cable thatuses IP passthrough, your computer sees your device as anew local area network (LAN) connection. Bridgingconnects two networks together so that they act as onenetwork.

Before you create a bridge, make sure you do thefollowing:

Install Nokia Network Bridge. Enable IP passthrough on your device. Connect your device and computer with a DKU-2 data

cable.

Tip: For best performance, create the networkbridge connection immediately afterconnecting your device to the computer.

Note: Create the network bridge connectionimmediately after connecting your device tothe computer. Especially with Windows XP youhave to activate the bridge without delay. Ifyou experience any problems creating thebridge then disconnect the cable, connect itagain and this time create the bridgeimmediately.

To create a bridge:1 On your computer, click StartSettingsControlPanelNokia Network Bridge..

2 Select the connection from the list, and click OK.

Creating an Internet access pointUsing IP passthrough requires an Internet access point onyour device. You can use the same Internet access point forall your IP passthrough connections.

If your computer uses a dynamic IP address, do not enteran IP address for the Internet access point. Your Nokia9300 or Nokia 9500 Communicator gets the IP address ituses for the connection from the network DHCP server. Ifyour computer uses a static IP address, you need to enteran IP address for the Internet access point manually.

To create an Internet access point:

1 Press Desk, and select ToolsControl panelConnectionsInternet setup.

2 Press New.

3You are asked whether you want to create a copy of anexisting Internet access point. Press No.

4 Press Next.

5 In the Internet settings namefield, enter a name for theaccess point.

6 From the Internet settings typefield, select IPpassthrough, and press Next.

7 Press Advanced.

8 If your computer uses DHCP to acquire an IP address,check that the value of the Auto retrieve IPfield is Yes,and press Done.If your computer has a static IP address, change thevalue of the Auto retrieve IPfield to No, enter a static IPaddress, and press Done.

9 Press Finish.10 The new connection is listed on the Connectionstab.

11 If you entered a static IP address, enter the same IP

address for the connection in Network Connections.For details, refer to your operating systemdocumentation.

12You can now open an IP passthrough connection (forexample, with the Web browser of your Nokia 9300 orNokia 9500 Communicator). Make sure that you select

the connection you just created when prompted toselect an access point.

Troubleshooting

GeneralIf you cannot see your device on Windows Device Manageror Network Connections, do the following:

Check that your device is connected to the computerwith a DKU-2 data cable.

Check that the used data cable mode on your device isIP passthrough or IP passthrough overrides PC Suite.(ToolsControl panelConnectionsCable setup) InIP passthrough overrides PC Suitemode, your device is notshown unless you have an active IP passthroughconnection.

InstallationIf you cannot start the installation, make sure that youhave administrator rights to your computer.

If you connected your device and computer beforeinstalling Nokia Network Bridge, do the following:

1 Cancel the installation.2 Remove the cable from your computer.3 Install Nokia Network Bridge.4 Connect the data cable to your computer.5 Install the RNDIS driver as usual.

If this does not work, do the following:1 Open Windows Device Manager. (Start

SettingsControl PanelSystemHardwareDevice Manager)

2 From the Network adapters list, select the connection

created for your Nokia 9300 or Nokia 9500Communicator, right-click your mouse, and selectProperties.
