“nobody calls me a wog, anymore” – Analysis
From the title, it’s obvious that the poet has been called a “wog” before, and it has reached a stop. From the author’s name, it is clear that he is not a native born Australian, however a migrant. Through his first few verbs, it becomes apparent that Zervos, the poet, expresses his anger towards the ignorance of the Australians towards him, or more so his race. He reflects on the fact that the society doesn’t accept him despite he’s legally an Australian, which he is furious about. Earning no respect from the native Australians, he had decided to return the favour, and writes Australia with a lower case a in the beginning. One possible explanation is that Zervos is extremely disappointed by the local people, that he no longer wants to become an Australian, but rather just an australian, meaning he does not want to become a typical Australian person, but rather just a person from australia. Zervos’ clever use of language features spoke the inner most rage and frustration. He mocks those who are inferior yet look down on him and praises himself as he demands respect from the general Australian people.
