An Introduction to FF&S PrintingFF&S, Inc. is a full service printer, ad promotional and office supply dealer with

its home base in Noblesville’s Hipstoric Downtown. Founded in 1986, FF&S has continued to grow with its strong reputation of dependability, quality, and value. Led by Jeff Williams, with a staff of 28, the FF&S team takes pride in providing the absolute best in customer service. In addition to its core focus, FF&S offers many added value aspects for its customers benefit including online ordering, reporting, warehousing and fulfillment.

Noblesville Offers An Ideal Location for FF&SIt was important for FF&S to be located in a place where clients would want to come for site visits. Noblesville’s unique downtown area with local shops and restaurants met that attribute for FF&S. Jeff Williams shared, “Our clients love to come visit us in Noblesville.” Offering Great Qualities for Businesses Like FF&SNoblesville as a city offers FF&S a lifestyle. The trend of reuse and repurposing is attractive to many entrepreneurs and businesses in today’s culture. Noblesville Downtown offers an “old meets new” in its historic office building spaces, like that of FF&S. “Downtown Noblesville has this naturally,” said Jeff Williams. “There isn’t this new, made to feel like old like other cities and towns nearby.” Companies like FF&S want to hire and retain the best talent. “The best talent have made it clear they want to love their office setting, and Downtown Noblesville provides this for FF&S.”

Qualities Noblesville Offers Staff at FF&SFF&S staff enjoy the simplicity and convenience Downtown Noblesville offers. In the downtown area they can eat, get a hair cut, shop, and go to farmers markets, as well as work all within the Hipstoric environment.

Jeff Williams describes his goal for the company to not only stay focused on the bottom line, but to promote that a business can contribute in the community and across the world. FF&S leadership and staff volunteer domestically and internationally. FF&S will travel to the Dominican Republic for the third year in a row this month to build a home for a family in need. “I am proud of our company and our culture, it is my top priority.”

FF&S has offices in Colorado, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio, with its home office in Noblesville’s Downtown at 44 S. 8th Street. The FF&S building, owned by Jeff Williams, is now the only historic building on the square to display mural art on the exterior of the brick, painted by artist Gabriel Lehman. A new mural painted on the side of an historic building in downtown Noblesville is attracting a lot of attention!

The whimsical, Tim Burton-esque painting dotted with puffy clouds is instantly recognized by many as the work of local and internationally renowned artist Gabriel Lehman.

The artist spent three days on scaffolding in late August — during the hottest week of the summer — to paint the mural on the FF&S building at 44 S. 8th Street in Hipstoric Noblesville.

“It turned out great!” says Economic Development Specialist Alaina Shonkwiler who worked to get the project off the ground through the Façade Improvement Grant Project. “This is what we try to do: showcase local talent in various ways and get it out in the public eye. It’s what helps make Noblesville unique,” says Alaina. Jeff Williams, Noblesville businessman and owner of the building, also enjoys the mural, but for him, the painting has a special meaning.

“I met with Gabriel to discuss ideas for the mural, and during our conversation, I mentioned my daughter Olive who was not quite a year old," recalls Jeff. “Soon after that, Gabriel said he had the idea: a tribute to Olive called ‘Olive and Her Amazing Cloud Machine!’ I loved it!”

Lehman burst onto the local art scene in Noblesville about three years ago, and the art community immediately took to his unique style of painting.

He did have a gallery in Noblesville, but his work is no longer there as he now has international representation.

The mural on the 1910 building replaces a badly faded mural that was painted there more than a decade ago.

Murals on building used to be a popular form of advertisement for businesses, but many cities today like Noblesville have sign ordinances prohibiting murals for advertisements. So the colorful, cartoon-like mural with Lehman’s signature puffy clouds that appear to be floating off the building seems to be the perfect addition to the Hipstoric Noblesville landscape.

It is certainly enjoyed by many passing by on foot or in cars and will undoubtedly be enjoyed by Olive when she is old enough to learn of the story behind the mural!

You can learn more about Hipstoric Noblesville and their many events to celebrate the arts by checking out their Facebook page (facebook.com/hipstoricnoblesville), and you can learn more about artist Gabriel Lehman at gabriellehman.com.

When Noblesville resident Megan Schnitz donated blood at Indiana Blood Center, she was not expecting to win thousands of dollars. So when she got a call a few days later telling her that she was randomly selected to win a travel voucher, she was shocked.

Indy Travel Leaders partnered with Indiana Blood Center for their biggest promotion ever, giving away one $5,000 travel voucher to a randomly selected donor.

“We do promotions pretty heavily in the summer because they are slower months since high schools and colleges are on break," said Indiana Blood Center Donor Marketing Specialist Maria Keyler. “In order to get donors through the door, we do a lot of promotions. This is the biggest one that we have ever done.”

Schnitz, a registered nurse at IU Health, was awarded the voucher after donating only three times. “When I first got the call, I couldn’t believe it. I was actually in the lunch room with my co-workers, and when it finally registered, I was over the

moon,” said Schnitz. “I am not sure what I am going to do with the voucher right now, but I have a lot of ideas in mind.”

A MEMOIR BY ELIZABETH KRAFT TAYLOR

Writer & Photographer / Kara Reibel

Elizabeth Kraft Taylor, known to friends as “Eliz” (Liz), is an indelible mix of grit and elegance. “Three Jews Walked Into A Shopping Center…” is Taylor’s new memoir, recounting amazing life stories that only she could share.

Featured on the back cover of her memoir is a “want ad” she saw in the Chicago Tribune: “Wanted: Creative Director; wild, undisciplined, sometimes rebellious, raw talent seeks leadership.” She says, “I knew it was written for me.”

After working in retail in Chicago, Taylor

was ready for her next challenge. Not surprisingly, she got the job and moved to Indianapolis, starting a career with Melvin Simon & Associates.

“I’d met Melvin, Herb, and Fred 12 years prior to accepting the job at Simon when they visited a grand reopening for Madigan’s, the most successful store in any of their malls, which was the store where I was the Marketing Director in Chicago,” recalls Taylor. “These three Jews walked into the store and became my three wise men.”

Taylor would work for Simon during the golden age of retail during the ’80s and early ’90s. She would be actively involved

with the opening of the Mall of America as well as Circle Centre Mall, the Indiana Roof Ballroom, Embassy Suites Hotel, the Indiana Pacers and many other tremendous marketing events that she staged, raising the bar and attracting retailers such as Nordstrom to Indianapolis.

Taylor has shared so many of her stories over the years, inevitably eliciting the response from her listeners, “Eliz, you should write a book.”

Taylor dedicates the memoir to her three wise men and to Gerald Paul (Paul Harris, where she served on the Board of Directors), Jerry Gershman and to “Jewish men

“THREE JEWS WALKED INTO A SHOPPING CENTER...”

everywhere who give a shiksa a chance.”

Taylor steps further with her prologue, stating the reasons she wrote the book. The first is to honor and remember Melvin Simon because just attending a synagogue to hear his name read aloud once a year was not enough for her. Her second reason was to show the honesty and ethical values that serve as the foundation for the incredible success of the Simon organization.

Lastly, she writes to share her personal story of determination and hopes to make the point that “we are all born with handicaps and blessings, and it’s our job in life to figure out which is which.”

The delightfully creative copy for the want ad that drew Taylor to Indianapolis was written by then senior copywriter, Teri Moore. “Eliz was, of course, the ideal candidate! She brought structure and just enough organization, but never let that flame of creative freedom burn low,” shares Moore. “It was a madhouse most of the time – creativity, originality, lots of hard work, and above all, the license to thrive in a very loving and supportive environment.”

The marketing events were nonstop with the number of malls across the country, and with the special events held at each, there was never a dull moment. Taylor shares one story about an event held at a mall in Idaho where the Lone Ranger was to make a celebrity appearance.

“You never knew what was going on,” shares Taylor with a smile and a laugh. “I sent a girl to pick up the Lone Ranger, and he came to his hotel room door naked wearing only the mask.”

It’s far more than a fun memoir; it’s a living historical account of the rise of the shopping mall and the evolution of retail marketing. It’s funny, insightful and inspiring. Taylor had a tough start with an abusive drug-addicted mother who died prematurely, leaving Taylor with three younger sisters who she worked hard to raise after the death of their mother.

“Eliz’s book is a great read for anyone from Indiana, anyone in retail and anyone who comes from less than ideal beginnings,” shares Inside INdiana Business Host Gerry Dick.

Taylor is still close to many of her employees and co-workers including Business Development Entrepreneur Jim Austin, who says of Taylor, “Eliz led the industry by leading Simon marketing. She has a brilliant marketing mind and provided me with great guidance throughout our work together which allowed me to hone my own marketing skills early in my career,” shares Austin. “It was a very special time to be a part of the Simon marketing department.”

Taylor praises the Simon brothers for empowering her, and she believes that their religion helped shape the company in very positive ways. “Whenever we opened a new mall which was three or four a year in those days, we would always be involved in that local community in a philanthropic way,” shares Taylor. “And Melvin would say ‘do more.’ I grew up Catholic and were always told to give to the church. The Simon brothers, through their belief of ‘our job is to heal the world,’ gave me a new perspective, and that became an integral part of my life and continues today.”

The inner strength and grace that emit from Taylor come from a special place. She found a path enabling her to thrive which is nothing short of a miracle given her upbringing, an important and compelling story by itself.

After experiencing a childhood of abuse, Taylor felt there wasn’t anything she couldn’t handle. Her strength of character and perseverance served her well, weathering tough circumstances and

“WE ARE ALL BORN WITH HANDICAPS AND BLESSINGS, AND IT’S OUR JOB IN LIFE TO FIGURE OUT WHICH IS WHICH.”

guiding her to becoming a successful Senior Marketing VP at Simon. Later, Taylor continued her career as President and CEO of the 500 Festival.

“Eliz Kraft Taylor had a significant impact on my career,” shares National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Executive Director Mi’Chelle Bettner. “When I worked with her at the 500 Festival, her creative vision was inspiring and a model for me moving forward. Eliz was a mentor to me, and I am blessed to have worked with her.”

Today Taylor is dedicated to serving not just the community but friends who may be dealing with their own challenges.

“I am very happy that she got the opportunity to write this book,” shares Eliz’s husband Stephen Taylor of Stephen Taylor Design Residential Interiors. “Expressing her appreciation to Melvin and Herb was a cathartic experience and the

fact that this gave her a chance to come to terms with her childhood. I believe Eliz to be a superb example to people who’ve dealt with adversity.”

“I have been blessed in so many ways and feel that I am called to devote my time to people in need,” shares Taylor. “I realized that there are people out there that are too shy to ask for help. People just need to love each other.”

Whether it’s a phone call or a note of encouragement, Taylor is dedicated to spreading compassion and love.

“I am happy to share my stories,” says Taylor. “It was a great release for me and a cathartic healing experience.”

“My first goal with my memoir is to bring back conversation about Melvin Simon,” states Taylor. “He was so important to shaping this city, and his impact nationwide cannot be overstated. My three wise men

were wonderful, kind people.”If gold is to be purified, it has to pass through fire. That’s what Eliz is – gold.

VENUE"A Unique Setting. Rich In Heritage"In 1834, George Metsker was deeded 180 acres from Andrew Jackson, the 7th President of the United States, where Mustard Seed Gardens exists today. One of the largest and most successful plantation owners in 1800's the Metsker Family farmed the land and raised horses for any years. One of the most unique parts of the plantation was an Italianate style house, an impressive, square-towered, irregularly shaped mansion with deep eaves, was based on the northern Italian country houses of Tuscany. The "Olde Barn" was relocated in 1892 from downtown Noblesville to its current location at Mustard Seed Gardens. The barn has been completely transformed to the original "post and beam" construction with modern amenities, such as heat and air conditioning, allowing for year round use. Mustard Seed Gardens offers A Unique Setting.Rich in Heritage for weddings, receptions, corporate events and small occasions.

“They came, they conquered, they cultivated a new fall favorite,” says Keriann Rich, President, Hot House Communications, of last year’s Beards and Brews competition. “This year’s championship of Beards and Brews promises to deliver all of the competitive flare you can imagine associated with beards and those who sport and love them.” Noblesville’s Hipstoric™ Downtown will host the event Saturday, October 24 from 12-4 p.m. in the parking lot at 8th Street and Maple Avenue. “If you attended Beards and Brews last year, I guarantee you’re coming back,” says a confident Chris Owens, Executive Director of Noblesville Main Street. “Beards and Brews quickly created a cult following, and we are committed to making this an annual event that brings people to experience all that our city has to offer.” Local breweries are represented both in the beards competition as well as their brews. Leading up the championship, five Central Indiana brewing companies will host a preliminary beard contest at their brewery. Each of these participating breweries will invite interested contenders to participate in their qualifying contest, naming a bearded representative in the following categories: Best of Show, Longest Beard, Thickest Beard and Most Creatively Groomed Beard. “The hipstoric™ initiative in Noblesville is an effort to connect and engage people, places and experiences with community,” said Alaina

Shonkwiler, Economic Specialist focusing on downtown culture for the City of Noblesville. “Connecting with visitors or those new to Noblesville is important when keeping our hipstoric™ square an attraction. Why not host an event that attracts people with an idea that is timely and on trend?” Noblesville’s own Barley Island, Grand Junction Brewing Company from Westfield and Indy-area breweries Fountain Square and Bier Brewery will all host preliminary beard contests on their turf during the first two weeks of October. Their bearded representatives will compete at the Beards and Brews Championship, alongside any interested community members wishing to “walk up” and enter their own beard into the contest. “This contest is not exclusive to those representing the participating breweries,” added Owens. “Anyone wishing to enter their beard into the ’community call out’ portion of the event is encouraged to do so — the more bearded, the better.” During the championship, a panel of judges will name an overall winner for each of the said contest categories. Winners will be awarded a prize package, but more importantly, bragging rights. Brews from Barley Island, Grand Junction Brewing Company, Fountain Square Brewing, Triton Brewing, Three Wise Men Brewery and Sun King Brewing will all be on site from 12-4 p.m. This year, sample swigs from each brewery will be included with the $15 admittance. Beards and Brews welcomes special headliner

James and The Drifters, a midwestern folk/rock/indie band with independent album releases and homegrown Indiana roots. “Noblesville is known for having an abundance of great events,” said Owens. “This one will be for those 21 years and older, which we feel adds to the diversity of our event offerings. Ultimately, the goal of this event is to bring new people to Noblesville, showing off the great places and experiences we have to offer. Adding James and The Drifters to our stage will add another element that we’re excited to offer.” Nickel Plate Arts and independent artisans and makers will host spaces within the event, alongside fashion-forward booths for all. The Beards and Brews Championship is open to the public, those 21 years and older. Tickets are available at the event for just $15 per person to attend, includes admission and limited beer sampling from participating breweries. There is no additional fee to enter your beard in the “walk up” community category.

Beards and Brews raises dollars to support the initiatives of Noblesville Main Street, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to promote economic and cultural vitality of Downtown Noblesville. For event updates and information, visit hipstoricnoblesville.com or facebook.com/hipstoricnoblesville.

One glance at SmithHouse’s towering white columns, definitive brick façade and black shutters creates a desire to know more about the rich history of this Noblesville landmark.

SmithHouse, constructed in the 1930s just outside downtown Noblesville, began as a magnificent family home and transitioned into commercial use. SmithHouse is now a wonderful place to gather and celebrate any occasion – weddings, reunions, showers, birthdays, graduations, holidays. It’s also a perfect setting for business meetings, seminars and training sessions out of the office.

SmithHouse offers event space with a modern flair of fresh colors and pallet-covered walls, yet features the original materials characteristic of days long past – detailed trim, French doors, multiple fireplaces, interior brick walls and a grand staircase.

SmithHouse is located in Noblesville’s Riverfront Redevelopment District on over one acre of land.

The Wellington Banquet and Conference center in Fishers has new ownership energized by the possibilities of their facility. Located just north of 96th Street and close to I-69, owner Cami O’Herren is capitalizing on their talented staff and amenities to provide superb service and accommodations for events.

Having taken over the facility earlier this year, O’Herren says, "It’s all about bringing business to this area.” And with several hotels in close proximity, O’Herren is happy to work with the neighbors stating, "We all fill a slightly different niche, and working together benefits us all.”

According to O’Herren’s husband, Greg, owner of Shamrock Builders, “It’s the flexibility of the space that makes it so appealing."

The Wellington is capable of hosting events up to 500 guests. Wedding receptions, business seminars, board meetings and other events are welcome.

Replete with all the technology for business or banquet events, including a dance floor, The Wellington has it all.

In addition to the amenities, a great location and flexible space, The Wellington offers something many consider the icing on the cake a commercial kitchen and a full time chef.

“We can create anything from box lunches to gourmet meals with beef tenderloin and salmon,” says Cami, “We have added individual beef wellington appetizers with a special Wellington sauce.”

With an extensive menu for onsite catering plus the ability to cook, staff, and serve off site, The Wellington offers endless possibilities.

“We would like the Wellington to be considered as a wonderful facility with excellent food and great service,” says O’Herren, “Our goal is a wonderful experience for every client.”

With the growth in Fishers and surrounding areas, The Wellington is an ideal venue for office and social events.
