KOONUNG SECONDARY COLLEGE WINTER MUSIC CONCERT
No.9 June 24 2014
THOUGHT OF THE WEEK
“A person’s true wealth is the good he or
she does in the world.”

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
CLASS
It has been a busy term and as we approach the mid-year break we are pleased to acknowledge many successes. Firstly, we congratulate Matthew Ponza, our College Captain, on his selection as the Whitehorse young person of the month. Details about his nomination are presented by Andrew Mangonis later in this newsletter. The music staff were pleased with the polished performances of our musicians at last week’s winter music concert. Congratulations to David Forward who coordinates the music staff, and to the music captains: Aaron Cutter and Connor Anderson-Vague for their performance as concert hosts. Over the last two weeks, students in Years 10 and 11 sat their end of semester exams and we were pleased with their positive attitude, their approach to the exams and their exemplary conduct. Semester reports are available this Friday, 27th June 2014 on Compass. Please access the reports through Compass by clicking on the Reports tab. Parents are reminded to read and discuss the reports with their son/daughter. A shared discussion will enable you to fully digest the report. Please spend some time viewing your son/daughter’s reflections (see reports tab – Insights – School Reflections S1 2014). We are pleased to offer work experience to our year 10 students this week, and they are experiencing an amazing array of workplaces, ranging from being out in the field with surveyors to having a placement with Melbourne Storm. Thank you to the Careers team, Trish Paddick, Kylie Poppins and Carol Marcianti for their excellent organisation of these visits. Students are able to experience workplaces and find out about possible career paths. There are some staff changes next term and we are pleased with the staff appointed to various advertised positions.
We welcome Jon Wanner and Marion Last back to our community as they return after long service leave. We wish the following staff all the best whilst on leave from our school next term: Virginia Nugent, Lauren Appledore, Georgia Asvestas, Elizabeth James, Peter Stanley and Christine Hardidge. Also, we wish Phil Dimattina, David Foote, Shaun Sanderson and Peter Wright well as they take short term leave.

UNIFORM REPORT
Please note the following amendments to the uniform policy, as ratified at College Council last week:
1 Short or long sleeved shirts are allowed, with the requirement that in winter the shirt must be tucked in.
2 The Koonung regulation spray jacket may be worn for outside use in the school grounds when there is wet weather; or may be worn during Sport
Education days (years 7 & 8) and during PE classes. The spray jacket may only be worn to and from school when it is wet weather. It is to be worn over the blazer in these circumstances. The exception is when designated excursions require the sport uniform be worn, as per the notification on Compass events.
3 The Koonung regulation blue blazer must be worn as the outer garment to and from school (unless the spray jacket is worn if it is wet weather) and during period 1, except for days when the forecast temperature is 25 degrees Celsius or over(as per the Bom weather forecast as shown on the Koonung webpage). The Koonung regulation jumper is not permitted to be worn as the outer garment when travelling to and from the college.
It is important that students provide notes for situations when a uniform item is unable to be worn (e.g. blazer is being dry-cleaned). The note should be given to the relevant subschool administrator prior to the start of the school day

SENIOR SCHOOL EXAMS
Over the last two weeks our Senior students have been hard at work sitting their examinations.
WINTER MUSIC CONCERT
The Theatre was full on the 18th of June for the Winter Music Concert. The Audience was treated to a program that displayed the work of the music students over the semester. The choir began with a moving work from South Africa Asimbonanga (Mandela)/Biko by Jonny Cleg and Peter Gabriel. This prepared the audience for a number of new directions which included the new Year 8 Musicicology bands. These bands are part of a new year 8 Project Based Learning initiative which provided an opportunity for Instrumental student to practice in a band at music of their choice. One Musicology band (The Keys) combined with the Guitar ensemble perfoming the current hit ‘Hey Brother” by Avicii featuring the vocal of Amy Thomson. The other band (the Genius-s)performed their arrangement by the White Stripes 7 Nation Army. These young musicians were well received and encouraged by the audience. The string instrument students had a larger part to play and were involve in the Salon band with conductor Ms Suzie Reid and the main String Enemble with conductor Ms Catherine Narayan. Featured soloist were vocalists Callam O’Dowd, Alex Owens, Laura Lording Morell and Pianist Nathalie Chen. VCE Music Performance students introduced their new directions in a repertoire with some interesting 60’s Music. Aaron Cutter and Luke Wilcockson, along with the White Band, performed Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” and then “Soul Man” with Callum as the Magenta Group - with unusual vocal techniques. Aidan Oon – Clark and the Burandy Band transfixed the audience the iconic Riders On The Storm (The Doors). Music Award recipients for this year were: Daniel Siu for his commitment to the String Program; Petra Green – for her commitment to the Concert Band, Swing Band, Salon Band on Double Bass; and Alex Owens for his commitment to the vocal program . Also recognized were Conor Anderson Vague, Aidan Oon- Clarke, Tom Wilson, Jonathan Brisbane and Petra Green for representing Koonung at the Regional Concert at Hamer Hall this term. Finally, the ‘Urinetown’ Cast treated the audience to the whole cast finale of the first act of the show revealing the humour and infectious music of the show. Don’t miss it.
Thanks to Susanna Dernelley, Concert Coordinator – and all Instrumental Staff, other volunteer staff who supervised the excited performers, parents for provide cakes and other delights and the audience and thanks to the students for such a great show.

CITY OF WHITEHORSE YOUNG
PERSON OF THE MONTH AWARD
Matthew Ponza is the recipient of the City of Whitehorse Young Person of the Month Award for July. He adds to a growing list of Koonung students who have received this award in the last year. In fact, the current City of Whitehorse Young Person of the Year Award winner is Amber Blackwell-MacGilp - who began her secondary schooling at Koonung in Year 7 and finished her VCE last year.
Matthew’s Reflections: Over recent years I have made a point of involving
myself in many community and school programs.
Throughout my time at Koonung I have
contributed to the community in many ways.
More recently I have volunteered for the Cerebral
Palsy Education Centre, the James Macready-Bryan
(JMB) Foundation for acquired brain injury and the
Box Hill Whitehorse Hockey Club. The Box Hill
Whitehorse Hockey Club is an organisation that
has really rewarded my contributions and has
encouraged me to further develop. With the club I
have both played and coached a premiership win,
received the young person of the year award and
been guided through coaching at Koonung as well.
Koonung Secondary College has allowed me to
participate many leadership, sporting and extra
curricular activities. I have represented Koonung
on the Great Victorian Bike Ride, hockey,
swimming, school musicals, the Lions Youth of the
Year, and at the Koonung Ski Camp. I have
received academic Achievement Awards as well as
being the voice of the students in the 2014 School
Captain role. I am really honoured to be recognised
by the Whitehorse Leader; their recognition has
given me the confidence to continue helping the
community.

50TH ANNIVERSARY
COMMEMORATIVE PAVERS
As part of our 50th Anniversary Celebrations individual commemorative pavers will be installed in a prominent position in the school grounds. You can have your name engraved into a paver as a lasting record of your connection to Koonung Secondary College. This is a rare opportunity to commemorate your time at Koonung in such a permanent way. This is the first time commemorative pavers have been offered to our community and it is unlikely to happen again in the near future. A paver can represent the whole family or individuals. Details are in the Order form. Print the form or alternatively please fill in the hard copy which has been sent home with your son/daughter and return to the school at your earliest convenience.

EASTERN REGION CROSS COUNTRY
Last week 23 Koonung students competed at Yarra
Valley Racecourse in the Eastern Metro Region
Cross Country.
All competed well in the muddy conditions and did
themselves and Koonung proud. Congratulations
to James Elward, who finished 7th and Matt
O’Donnell who finished 3rd. They will now
compete at the State Championships in Term 3.
PROJECT BASED LEARNING
Every Wednesday students in Year 8 are undertaking Project Based Learning. Perform Out Loud is one of the projects on offer. In Perform Out Loud we have been studying different styles of dance. We got into groups of two or three and we each picked a type of dance to study and choreograph our own routine. At the moment we are each working on a piece that goes for about 1 minute.
The styles of dance are: Contemporary, Burlesque, Jazz and Hip Hop. Our end goal is to combine all the routines and perform a dance that will go for 6 minutes. The true purpose of this is to showcase self-esteem and the effects it is having on young adults.
Year 8 Perform Out Loud group Isabel, Gemma, Maisie, Hannah, Anna, Mikala,
Rachel, Fadzai, Ally and Shania.

YEAR 7 GIRLS INTER-SCHOOL
SOCCER
On the 12th of June the year 7 girls soccer team played in all day soccer tournament at Darebin Institute of Soccer in Thornbury. The girls had a tough first match against East Doncaster: we lost 2 to 0. East Doncaster Secondary College went on to win the day. Our second game against Malluana Secondary College was more successful: we won 1 to 0, with excellent passing by Libby Odria. The goal was kicked by Chloe Stroumos. Excellent defensive play was shown by Jasmine Finter, Georgia Relph, Ohan Ra and Jacinta Woodcock. Our midfield; Kristina Ozzimo, Megan Fitz, Jessie Corben and Sam Mason got better with every game played.
The preliminary final was against Box Hill Secondary. Unfortunately we lost on penalties 3 to 2. Great goals were scored by Chloe and Jasmine. Excellent goal keeping was shown by Vicky Mangonis and Arkaela Athanas-Wilford. Thanks to Anthony Dorrington, from RMIT, for supporting the team; Monica Magot for doing the lines and to Mr Mangonis with his words of wisdom during the penalty shoot out.

JUNIOR INTER-HOUSE DEBATING
COMPETITION
Koonung held its first ever Inter-house Debating Competition this term. A combination of Year 7, 8 and 9 students coached by their house leaders debated 'That School Uniform should be compulsory'. The final was between Roberts and McCubbin. The Roberts team, Kireeti Thotakura, Steven Zhou and Anna McLean, took the negative side of the debate arguing for free dress during the school day. While the McCubbin team, Matthew Chong, Dana Kirimof and Faith Morgan were arguing in favour of a school uniform. Dana took away the 'Best Speaker' prize winning 10 points for McCubbin, but it was Roberts that won the debate by 1 point. A big congratulations to everyone involved and keep an eye out for the Senior Inter-house Debating Competition next term.

LANGUAGE PERFECT WORLD
CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS
What an exciting ten days of feverish language learning we had at Koonung and anywhere else that had internet access. Our students were able to greatly advance their vocabulary knowledge by accessing the Language Perfect World Championship. After an early start in the top 100, Koonung completed the championship with a ranking of 112th in the world and a category ranking of 38th for schools of our comparable size. We were 81st in Australia out of 778 schools. For the individual languages, Chinese was 11th, Japanese 101st and French 202nd overall in the world. A truly great achievement for Koonung. Our students achieved a number of awards: Elite Award (10,000+ points): Stanley Lin, Hong Yu Lim and Daniel Siu Gold Award (3,000+ points): Ryan Simms, Janet Edwards, Jessie He, Oliver Jackson, Lauren Edwards, Miguel Lourenco-Keene, Yen Pan, Tristan Tran and Emese Ropolyi. JAPANESE CURRY IN A HURRY
The Year 7 Japanese class enjoyed the delights of making and eating Japanese curry. After getting into groups they chopped and stirred their way to some delicious looking and tasting curry.
The Japanese curry is different to Indian curry in its flavour and ingredients. It is much milder and has a sweeter taste. By the end of the lesson the students’ stomachs could not hold any more of the yummy food as they waddled out to recess.
It was a fun and enjoyable way to experience another culture.

KOONUNG SECONDARY COLLEGE
MUSICAL 2014 – ‘URINETOWN’
Meet The Cast: Officer Lockstock – The show’s muscle and narrator played by Aaron Cutter.
Aaron’s views on Lockstock: Officer Lockstock is somewhat charismatic, he owns the show, telling the story of Urinetown. He holds the audience in the palm of his hand. Lockstock sings in Urinetown, Privilege to Pee (Lockstock’s Reprise), Cop Song (one of my favourites), Don’t Be The Bunny, Act 1 Finale, What Is Urinetown?, Why Did I Listen To That Man, We’re Not Sorry, and I See A River. Lockstock is quite the evil one, but his evil isn’t always inexplicable and he’s certainly not evil to all. As the narrator, Lockstock relates to everyone, but he has most of his interaction with characters like Little Sally, Caldwell B. Cladwell, Barrel, Hope, Bobby, Fipp and Mr McQueen. My favourite part of the show would have to be the music, the songs are fun and sound great when the entire cast is singing. Plus, our Muscial Director, Susanna Dernelley, is ace! The most challenging part of playing Lockstock has been learning the lines! I’ve always been horrible at lines (yes, this is my 5th production, I know!), and Lockstock says a massive amount of lines – plus learning lyrics, it’s pretty crazy. Officer Barrel – The narrator’s sidekick played by Maddy Allen.
Maddy’s views on Barrel: Barrel is a police officer and is basically Lockstock’s sidekick. Traditionally my character is played by a male - however in Koonung’s production of ‘Urinetown’ the role has been altered so that Barrel is a girl. On a complete contrast to the stereotypes of a female cop, my character enjoys all things pink, girly and fabulous. When it comes to the question of good or evil, Barrel is a complicated character, but I’d say she is tilting more towards the evil side though. Barrel spends most of her time with Officer Lockstock, so she relates to him easily. Koonung’s production of ‘Urinetown’ is epic and I think the audience will love the humour in the show, not to mention the insanely cool choreography. It has definitely been difficult trying to play the role of a giggling girly girl under the pretences of a cop.

RE: Last chance for Year 9 boys in Victoria to have breakthrough HPV vaccine for free Cancer Council Victoria is reminding parents of boys in Year 9 to ensure their son completes the three-dose HPV vaccination course, given this is the last opportunity for them to have the vaccine for free. The vaccine is being offered to boys aged 14–15 years for free until the end of 2014, as part of a catch up program. The vaccine course takes six months to complete, so boys need to get the first dose now to fully benefit from the catch-up program, which is only available until the end of 2014. All three doses of
the vaccine are needed to ensure maximum protection. If your child has already missed a dose at school, contact Whitehorse City Council on 9262 6197 for details of community catch-up sessions in 2014. GPs can also administer all three doses of the vaccine to boys aged 14-15 in 2014. The vaccine is free but the GP may charge a consultation fee. After 2014, missed doses will need to be purchased from a health service provider at a cost of approximately $150 each. If you are unsure if your son is fully immunised, please contact the National HPV Vaccination Program Register on 1800 478 734.
