33 Coptic Orthodox College
Term 3 has got off to a great start and the school is in an Olympic atmosphere. The Year 9 and 10 students organised an opening ceremony and sporting activities for the younger students. They had a wonderful day and credit must go to the Year 9 and 10 students who organised and ran the day. Well Done!
Parent-Teacher Night and Day was very successful. Those parents who could not find the time over the two days to meet teachers and discuss their children’s education should have received their reports by mail. I encourage these parents to ring the school and set up a time to talk about your child’s future.
Enrolments for 2013 are progressing well with more interest in Prep than we have had since I join the College. If you want to enrol your child in Prep in 2013 you must enrol them as soon as possible, otherwise a placement cannot be guaranteed.
From soft and fury koalas, penguins and teddy bears to
communication challenges, work experience stories and
balloon volleyball, corporate volunteers from GE along with
students and staff from St Anthony’s enjoyed a range of fun
and engaging experiences facilitated by Ardoch Youth
Foundation.
In June, earlier this year prep, grade 1 and 2 students were
joined by fourteen GE corporate volunteers armed with fresh
fruit and bags of goodies to share. After introductions, games
and stories all of the students had the opportunity to choose
the cute fluffy little creature they could build with the help of
the GE volunteers. Bags and bags of wading were on hand to
make sure all the student’s cute and fury little creatures were
soft and plump and ready to go home to their new family. It
was a fabulous morning for all and at times it was hard to
work out who was having more fun – the children or the
adults?
Building on the success of GE’s first visit to St Anthony’s it was
time to get the senior students involved, which commenced
with the introduction of Ardoch’s Literacy Buddy Program
through a letter writing process connecting year 10 VCAL,
Enterprise and Industry students with corporate mentors from
GE. After an exchange of the initial letter the visit from GE
mentors took place early in term 3 providing their first
opportunity to meet one another, it was also a great chance to
introduce year 9 and year 11 students to the GE mentors so
more could benefit from the day’s events and opportunities.
Human Relations staff from GE shared tips for job interviews
for future employment and GE Risk Management staff shared
some of their varied work and university experiences and
strategies to successfully complete secondary college and
transition into work or further study. Fun and games were also
had in between the information sharing, challenging students
and volunteers alike to work as teams, find creative ways to
communicate as well as team up for a game of balloon
volleyball! Once again all involved had an absolute ball and
another successful day was delivered.
These opportunities have provided a wonderful foundation for
a strong and positive relationship between St Anthony’s and
GE, enhancing student’s educational journeys through
authentic and meaningful learning experiences. Later in the
year senior students will visit GE in Richmond for more
fantastic opportunities to explore the diversity of employment
opportunities that exist within a corporation such as GE. Once
again GE corporate volunteers will share their knowledge and
experiences with students to assist the development of their
interview skills through a range of activities such as mock in-
terviews.
The Literacy Buddy program will also continue throughout
the year providing ongoing opportunities for students to fur-
ther their discussions with mentors and in the meantime other
GE corporate volunteers are eager to return to St Anthony’s to
see what fun and informative ways they can engage with stu-
dents from the Middle School.
Ardoch Youth Foundation works in partnership with schools,
communities and organisations to assist with the delivery of
best practice programs that enable access to the full benefits
of education for all children and young people. If you would
like more information about the Literacy Buddy program,
events with GE corporate volunteers, Ardoch Youth Foundation
and other Ardoch programs such as the Super Fun
(Homework) Club at St Anthony’s, please don’t hesitate to
contact Lucette Talbot, Ardoch Education Support Co-ordinator
in Frankston North on 9785 2130.
On Friday August 3rd, students in Middle school made their second
attempt to go on an excursion to the wonderful A Maze N Things at
Cowes. This time round, weather conditions were perfect for the
day, and students enjoyed a number of mind-challenging
experiences that tested not only their general knowledge and ability
to reason and think logically, but also their perceptions and what
they thought they knew with what was presented to them. Even
teachers and aides were duly impressed and challenged by the
activities on offer!
The Olympic Opening Ceremony was delightful and inspiring to be
involved in. All the children dressed in their Country colours and
displayed their magnificent flags. The Grade Prep to Four students
participated in the mini games with Year 9 & 10, who organised the
event. Special thanks to Mrs Bebawi and Sandra Fashka for their
contribution and support in making it a game of fun and excitement.
Also, next week the Year 5 to 8’s will be participating in their Olympic
mini games and there is a Whole School Closing Ceremony.
The soup kitchen experience is part of our Conflict and Res-
olution Theme of our term three Big Ideas program.
An organization called Transit put on a Monday night dinner
and food package give out for those that are in need and
marginalised. The Narre Warren Christian Church, hosted the
night with their pastor Keith Vedhark in charge.
Four excited students Rahwa, Justine, Marina and Melania
were transported to the church not really knowing what they were
up against. These four students are part of a team of twelve
picked after a strenuous round of interviews and applications.
As soon as we got there we were preparing food packages,
setting up tables, and preparing food in the kitchen. They fitted in
well and soon were working like a more experienced volunteer.
They did everything that was asked of them.
During dinner they washed dishes and made up and served
delicious burgers to appreciative diners. They got on very well
with the other workers and importantly showed kindness and
friendship to the people and families that they were serving.
The head of kitchen and Pastor Keith were so impressed
with our girls inviting them to come back on a more permanent
basis if they liked.
Overall, it was a fabulous night and the girls cannot wait for
next Monday. We will keep you posted on how the other students
go throughout the term.
Regards,
The Middle School Team.
