message from the EditorWelcome to No1 Directory!

We are continuing our aim to become more than just a directory, and as such, we’ve got even more exciting changes for our readers this month. We are starting a visual revamp of the magazine, including a brand new logo. We also have more What’s On pages, with a great list of things to do in the month of September. If you’re interested in Fashion, Food, Beer, Music or Football, we have all the details you need for some great activities in Leeds.

We are also expanding to feature new editorial content from the likes of Feel Good Factor and we have some very exciting plans for future editions.

And of course we also have advertisements from many local businesses and companies, and this month we are pleased to feature Covance, who are perform-ing medical trials within our community. It’s a great way to earn money and help medical science at the same time, so if you fit their criteria, it’s a fantastic opportunity.

What’s On

September is always a busy month in Leeds, as not only do the kids go back to school on September 3rd, but there’s also the influx of students to the city’s two Universities. Leeds Met’s term begins on the 17th and Leeds University’s two days later on the 19th. So while Leeds will be a lot busier in some places, No1 Directory has some great suggestions for interesting things to do over the next month.

The Annual Leeds Asian Festival takes place on Sunday 2nd September at Roundhay Park, and the biggest Asian event in Leeds is better than ever. The event opens at 12:00pm and features something for everyone. There is live Asian music and entertainment, a kid’s zone, craft stalls and a World Food Court. This is a great opportunity for people from all different cultures and generations to get together and celebrate. Previous Fes-tivals have been attended by up to 60,000 people. The entrance is free, so it’s a great, affordable day out for the whole family

Starting on the 3rd of September and running all through the autumn until the 3rd of December are the regular Little Voices Opera Workshops from Opera North. Located at the Howard Assembly Room, these workshops allow parents and their toddlers or babies to have fun with music and play a variety of mu-sical games. Not only are these games a lot of fun, but the workshops also aim to educate the kids, and inspire a life-long connection to the arts that will have a positive effect on a child’s mental development. The workshops are very good value, with a ticket only £3, but booking ahead is essential, so either call 0113 223 3565 or email [email protected] and get dancing!

From the 6th to the 9th of September, Leeds Town Hall plays host to the first ever Leeds International Beer Festival, an event that promises to be ‘a brand new beer festival experience’. The Festival will allow attendees to taste beers from some of the best brewers and breweries in the country, as well as Craft Beers from the USA and other International Ales. Whether you are a beer connoisseur or just want to have a good time, the Festival is perfect for you. And it’s not just Beer! Food will be available from local outlets such as Viva Cuba! And Fish&. There will also be live musical performances, with Rock and Roll from The Leeds City Stompers, Acoustic guitar from Serious Sam Barrett and Blues from Sam Attah and much more. Tickets are £6 a day, apart from Saturday the 8th, which is only £4. Too book, either call 0113 224 3801 or visit www.leedsbeer.com

What’s On

September sees the 2012-13 Football Season get into full swing, and with the weather still fairly warm, it’s a great chance to go support Leeds United in their push for promotion from the Championship. The Whites have 3 home games at Elland Road in September. On the 1st they take on Blackburn Rovers, then on the 18th is a Yorkshire Derby match against Hull City and finally on the 22nd is Nottingham Forest. Visit www.leedsunited.com to buy tickets. If Leeds are a bit out of your price range, there is a wide variety of smaller non-league clubs in Leeds that can be seen very cheaply or even for free. Visit www.leedsfa.co.uk for information about the Leeds Football Association and what’s going on at the grassroots level in your area. You might even get a game yourself!

Those with sophisticated palates should head down to the Leeds Malmaison on Sunday the 9th of September for The Big Cheese Pairing. Participants will be given the opportunity to taste 5 different artisanal cheeses, and wash them down with 5 specially selected alcohol-ic accompaniments. The event begins at 4pm and is a must for both cheese experts and also those looking for a new taste experience. To book tickets telephone 0113 398 1000 or email [email protected]. Due to the alcoholic drinks served with the cheese, it is an 18+ only event.

For the fashion-conscious amongst us, September delivers an event to savour. On Saturday the 8th at the VOX Warehouse, it’s the first Leeds City Style Show. The show aims to showcase the wide range of fashion talent based in Leeds, from established names you can see on the High Street, to new up and comers. Not only will there be a Catwalk show, but there will also be market stalls and live performances, including magic, dance and music from Frances Wood, a contestant on BBC hit ‘The Voice’. Tickets are only £20 and the organisers are also looking for volunteers, so visit www.leedscitystyle.co.uk to book or look to take part.
