Quick Start Welcome to the No-Worries manual. No-Worries is the ultimate insurance policy in the lighting industry! It’s five different operating modes offers the user a variety of backup and replay modes, including time code triggering and real-time playback. No-Worries can be used as an in-line DMX back-up device that can replay a whole show if the main lighting console fails, or can be used as a stand-alone unit to replay its own files automatically, manually, or synchronised with other equipment using MIDI Note commands or MIDI Time Code. (No-Worries TC only.) The entire system is driven by an easy to use menu system. We suggest that new users read the next section fully, for a basic overview of operation. The detailed function description sections of the manual can then be used for reference as required. In normal operation No-Worries displays a view of received DMX512 data, transmitted DMX data, or the main status screen. The different views of the Status screen are selected by pressing any softkey to activate the display menu, followed by the softkey with the required display options. The left and right arrow keys are used to expand the selected menu. Additional, more detailed information is shown on the optional VGA monitor. Please remember to return your product registration card, so that we can keep you informed of new developments.

System Options

Two versions of No-Worries are available: No-Worries standard, or No-Worries TC. The specification of No-Worries TC is the same as the standard version, with the addition of MIDI Time-code compatibility. Feature No-Worries No-Worries TC DMX inputs 4 x 512 4 x 512 DMX outputs 4 x 512 4 x 512 DMX looped outputs 4 x 512 4 x 512 Files 350 350 At Time Macros 8 8 Remote Triggers 8 8 MIDI Time Code No Yes MIDI Note trigger No Yes RS232 link Yes Yes VGA Monitor Optional Optional

Glossary Channel: Refers to the DMX512 inputs. Channels number from 1 to 2048. Output: Refers to the DMX512 outputs. Depending upon the operating mode of No-Worries, the channel levels may be looped from the DMX source, or generated as cues by No-Worries itself. File: A no worries file is a real-tine collection of DMX data. Each file may be a static lighting state, of a series of real time fades. MTC: An acronym for MIDI Time Code. No-Worries files can include a MTC start time and are automatically replayed when the start time matches the time code of an MTC transmitter. Trigger: The method of replaying a No-Worries file. The trigger can be a remote switch, a time code match, a time of day macro, or manual intervention. MIDI Remote Trigger: An alternative method of replaying a No-Worries file. The file is triggered automatically by a MIDI note on command generated by an external device.

SERVER SETUP

Caution: Advanced users only. The server mode of operation is provided to allow users to upgrade the operating software, archive shows, and duplicate the setup on more than one No-Worries. This is achieved by connecting No-Worries via the serial port to a PC running MS-DOS. The PC should be set to run interlink. On the PC, the following line should be added to the Config, sys file: Device = interlink.exe Reboot the PC after editing the config.sys file. Run the program Interlink.exe The PC will then log on to the No-Worries hard disk as another logical drive. All show files are named xxxx.NWB, where xxxx is a four-figure number. 0000.NWB = File 1 0001.NWB = File 2 … 0349.NWB = File 350. All timing and configuration is stored in “Config”. If this file is erased, No-Worries performs a factory start-up. The No-Worries operating system is contained in the file NOWOR.EXE. Updated versions of the operating system will be made available on our website.

RECORDING FILES

Each of the 350 files can record up to 12 hours of dynamic DMX data: a whole show in a single file in real time. File recording can be started manually by pressing the GO key in the Record Menu, or automatically by using a specific DMX input channel as a trigger. When the selected input channel exceeds 50%, the recording begins. Either start record method can be paused, continued, and stopped by using the controls in the Transport Menu. During the recording process, the DMX input is transmitted directly to No-Worries safe DMX output, so that all recording is dome “live”. This is shown on the front panel by the green CON (console) LED illuminating.

Time mode Can be set to CLOCK or MTC. Clock requires a time of day setting to be programmed, MTC a timecode header. The file is then automatically replayed when the system clock reaches matches the programmed time of day, or when No-Worries receives a timecode header matching the file’s MTC programming. (MTC functions only available on No-Worries TC). Day A file can be programmed to start automatically at a given time of day (as above) – but also subject to the day of the week. A file can be programmed to be replayed on an individual day of the week, or any day At End Determines what happens when the duration of the file is complete: The same file can be replayed, another file played, DMX input lines switched, or nothing at all. Play Mode Determines whether the channels are merged at the output with other files on HTP, or if only the non-zero channels change level at the output on LTP, thus over- riding their levels from other files or DMX loop through. A file can be assigned to an external remote trigger allowing it to be replayed from a remote location, such as the prompt corner, or programmed to play automatically on No-Worries power up. Remote triggers are described in the section “Macros and Remote Triggers” on page 39, and power-up macro (boot mode) is described on page 30.

exceeds 50% at the DMX input, the selected file is automatically played.

A recorded file can also be replayed by macro or remote trigger, MIDI command, at date & time, following another file, repeatedly after itself, or automatically at power up. These attributes are set in the File Edit menu as described in the previous section.

When a file is replayed, its channel levels can be merged with channels in other files on a Highest Takes Precedence basis, or can be replayed as Latest Takes Precedence, thus ensuring that all the non-zero channels change in intensity. The following example shows 2 examples: File 1 is already being replayed, and file 2 is added to it, first as HTP priority and secondly by LTP priority. The resulting output is quite different depending upon the priority. In both cases the channel levels can match those of either of the files, but which file’s levels are used depends upon the priority.

REAR PANEL

OVERVIEW

All No-Worries power and input / output connectors are located on the rear panel as shown. The following tables detail the connections.

DMX512 INPUT

The DMX512 input of each universe is optically isolated from No-Worries. There is no connection between control ground and chassis or mains earth. The input is unterminated. The loop connector is directly connected to each input and can be used for termination or loop through as required. Wiring for the Input and Loop connector is as follows:

Pin 1 Pin 2 Pin 3 Pin 4 Pin 5

Isolated ground Data minus Data Plus No Connection No Connection

DMX512 OUTPUT

There are two sets of four DMX output universes on No-Worries. The “Safe” outputs are controlled by No-Worries itself and are used for replay and back-up. The “Loop through” outputs are entirely passive and provide a DMX route through No-Worries even when the power is turned off. All DMX output connectors are wired to the appropriate standards as above

REMOTE INPUT

The Remote interface provides 8 contact closure inputs for Remote triggering. A Remote is triggered by shorting together the ground and input pin. A Maximum cable length of 5m is advised and the cable should be screened. Do not make any connections to voltage sources or Mains Earth. Wiring is as follows:

Pin 1 Pin 2 Pin 3 Pin 4 Pin 5 Pin 6 Pin 7 Pin 8 Pin 15

Aux 8 Aux 7 Aux 6 Aux 5 Aux 4 Aux 3 Aux 2 Aux1 Ground

RS232 An RS 232 port is provided for communication with a remote PC. In this configuration files can be backed up and the No-Worries firmware upgraded. A 9 pin to 9 pin DB cable is available from Artistic Licence. The cable is wired pin for pin and so most serial printer cables will work. Please note that ‘LapLink’ style cables will not work.

RJ45 10BASET

ETHERNET

This connector is provided for future No-Worries features.

MIDI Used for timecode and MIDI trigger. 5 pin DIN connector conforms to the MIDI standard. This connector is blanked off on the non “TC” version of No-Worries.

VIDEO High-density 15 pin “D” type connector conforming to standard S/VGA wiring. Drives any standard S/VGA monitor.

POWER Universal voltage input via IEC connector. Only change the fuse when the power is disconnected. The fuse rating is stamped on the rear panel.
