THE NOMADS CREED
“No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind;
And therefore, never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.”
from the Meditations of John Donne (1573-1631)

Playing a monthly game at my home course for the first time since the day I took over the reigns as Captain really felt like a Homecoming game! The day went off smoothly as the course was in great condition and the morning snacks, halfway house and overall experience was brilliant! Thank you,
Captain Angelo Sebastian, Manager Darren Plumb and all the staff for hosting us so professionally!
During prizegiving we had a few good laughs at the
fines one of our founding Members Ralph Kirsten
dished out to the “young guns”, asking their so-
called alter-ego mature members to reveal some
interesting moments shared between the young and
old. It was also a great day to enjoy the treats of a
HOLE-IN-ONE! Well done Hennie Venter for acing
hole #5! Your name will be inscribed on the Altar
for eternity.
I wish to take a moment to congratulate Vice Captain,
Rob Valentyn for hosting a fantastic Donkey Derby on the Friday night preceding the game… Again, our bookie Mike had a “Field”-day, while our own auctioneer Garth had us all empty our pockets. Together they raised over R30,000 for the Andrew Mentis Fund in one short evening. There was great spirit in the air, while Alan South played the DJ, the ladies danced the night away! I would like to encourage those that have never attended a Donkey
Derby to plan to do so when we do it again next year, even if you simply come to join in the fun.
These past three months have been a very busy period on the Nomad calendar and the Committee is preparing a 2020 Fixture list that will give us some breathing space. I am also pleased to announce that we have built up a substantial reserve with the help of our dedicated monthly Local Sponsors and you, our Members’ contributions, which we are planning to distribute amongst many needy families
and orphan children this Christmas. Watch this space…
By the time this Newsletter is published, we would have already had our Gold Cup and helped at the Alfred Dunhill Championships at Leopard Creek, but until we see you again, take it easy and stay
safe!

The Bookies Report on November Monthly Game held at Mbombela
Bets placed amounted to R2080 and the pay-outs amounted to R1600 resulting in a profit of R480. The profit was transferred to the AMF which now stands at R6180. In addition the Bookie has a float of R300 so effectiveley the monthly betting has contributed a total
of R6480 to AMF.
Robbie McLagan was the top scorer on the day with 37 points and no bets were placed on him – thanks Robbie
Mac.
There were four bets placed on the “Bunny Ears” fourball of Albert, Springer, Warren Slabbert and Bernie. Darren Plum kindly donated his winnings of R210 to AMF as he said it would be unfair to take money as this 4-ball was “a racing certainty” – thanks
Darren.
Rowan backed his 4-ball to be the “best playing 4-
ball” and made a tidy profit.
Please continue to support this initiative as it is a fun way of raising money for AMF and you can also walk away with a nice sum of money if you get
lucky.
PLACE YOUR ORDERS NOW!!!
For those who were not at the Gold Cup game on Sunday 24 November where orders for winter playing jackets were taken, please check your emails in this regard and respond as
soon as possible.
The price is R399 for our first bulk order of 50 jackets. If you order individually later the price will be much higher. An order form is included with the most recent email from Match
Secretary, Rob Douglass.
Don't get fined for incorrect dress code, order the correct
jacket now.
DO IT NOW!! DON’T DELAY.

REPORT ON THE DONKEY DERBY HELD AT MBOMBELA GOLF CLUB ON 08 NOVEMBER
The second Lowveld Nomads Donkey Derby took place on 8 November at Mbombela Golf Club. Although the numbers were slightly down compared to last year, the evening was a huge success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. Six races were held and the auctioneer “Snakes” Snyman made sure that folk had to dig deep into their pockets if they wanted to be the owner of a horse. The average price a horse was auctioned for was R900 and I am sure that without Garth - this amount would have been significantly lower – Thanks Garth for the entertainment and the additional money that you generated for Andrew Mentis. The betting on each race was brisk and a lot of encouragement and banter took place during each race with the jockeys also getting into the spirit of things. Gary “Archimedes” Angelos got carried away too early in the evening - backing the Greek horses and he was soon penniless and quietened down a bit becoming “The Thinker” rather than “Archimedes” or “Zeus”. However he bounced back strongly later in the evening when the Ladies took to the dance floor when he became John Travolta. Alan South was the DJ for the evening with lively music between races and a flat-out party after the last race. Thanks Alan for sponsoring a Race and volunteering your services as the DJ. Bryan Anderson (a guest from White River) bid the highest price of R6500 for a 3 night weekend at Kruger Park Lodge. Thanks Bryan for bidding and KPL for your generosity. The last race of the evening was won by the “Black Horse” Captain Kolisi and the winning owner Colin Tilley won a whopping R5000. The evening resulted in an overall profit of R30,000 for the Andrew Mentis Fund and thanks must go to all who participated for the enthusiastic betting and bidding on horses – thanks to Arthur Douglass and Greg Rattray for organising full tables and to all who participated. For an evening like this to be successful we need sponsors and the people they bring to the evening adds hugely to the good vibe on the night. Special thanks to the sponsors of the races namely, Bonanza Catering (Alan South), Interwaste (Jason Davis), Heritage Motor Vehicle Group (Paul Wood) and Jock Pub and Grill (Greg Cruse).

who are feeling “under the weather” - recuperating slowly?
‘Out of sorts’, hurting, uncomfortable??
Dr John Luyt has had a fall and is recovering at home with a painful,
sprained/broken elbow. Not what we wanted to hear at all - John!
Please get well soon and take care of yourself.
Gerald Bullen is recovering from the procedure when two stents were fitted and he’s doing well. Nine holes of golf on Thursday helped him catch up and a good score made it even better. So he’s getting
ready for his next Nomads game in January 2020

New Nomad Handicap rules as approved at the 124th
NATIONAL MANAGEMENT MEETING The rules of play are being rewritten in accordance with the decisions taken at the National Management meeting. Here is an early news flash of the decisions taken. All forward tee players may apply to revert to the back tees under the following conditions:
This is a once-off concession until such time that you can no longer play off the back tees. There is no concession on handicap. It will remain unchanged if you go to the back. Thereafter the normal rules of play will apply. If you again apply for forward tees as a result of
advanced age, there will again be a two-shot cut to your handicap.
Irrespective of which course you play on, your handicap at the previous game will determine your handicap for the next game. The following rules still apply:
If you score 28-32 points at a previous game your Nomads handicap will remain unchanged for
the next game. For every two points below 28 you will receive one stroke with a maximum of two strokes. If you score 33 or more you will be cut a stroke for every two points above 32 with no limit. Your maximum Nomad handicap will not be affected by slope and will be:
Back tees – Your handicap index multiplied by 1.25 Forward tees – Your handicap index multiplied by 1.07
The divisional adjustment of 0-1-2 in the A, B and C divisions respectively, no longer applies. The maximum Nomads handicap remains 25.
All new handicap rules are applicable as from 1st January 2020. On course changes when you score. When you register at the starters table in the morning, after your handicap card has been swiped,
you will be given your handicap index and the Nomads handicap for the day. On the scorecard you will then enter the handicap index in the block labelled “Club Hcap” and
your Nomads handicap in the block labelled “Nomad Hcap”.
You then score the player you are marking’s gross score as allowed on the SAGA handicap system
(net double bogey) on a hole plus the Medal Stableford
