Whether its reading to your child, or providing them with the time and space to read independently, daily reading is absolutely vital. At school we teach students the skills they need to become competent readers but we need your help to ensure these skills are practiced every day. There is a wealth of research supporting daily reading with your child and here are a few of the ways reading with your child for 20 (or more) minutes a day benefits him or her. Reading is brain foodOur brains develop as we feedthem with experiences. The experience of reading (whether youre the reader or the one being read to) activates and exercisesmany of the areas of the brain. The visual cortex works as your eyes track the words on the page and look at the illustrations. Your memory makes connections between what you already know about the topic of the story and its content. You integrate new information learned through reading further strengthening and growing your network of knowledge. Reading provides one of the most enriching and complex brain activities available in life. Reading improves listening skills What parent doesnt want their child to be a good listener? The experience of being read to helps children develop good listening skills by keying them into the components of language. Through reading they learn to recognize phonemes (the sound building blocks of language), learn new words to add to their oral vocabularies and connect written words to their real world applications. Practice makes perfect Generally, the more time you are exposed to something and the more time you spend practicing it, the better youll become at performing it. This is absolutely true for reading. Research shows that children who have repeatedly been exposed to books from birth generally exhibit strong reading abilities. FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Why is it important to include 20 minutes of reading in your child’s daily schedule? Whether it’s reading to your child, or providing them with the time and space to read independently, daily reading is absolutely vital. At school we teach students the skills they need to become competent readers but we need your help to ensure these skills are practiced every day. Prep Playground A reminder to parents and students that the prep playground (outside Mrs Walsh’s room) is out of bounds before and after school to all students and young children. Playing on this playground is dangerous for young kids who aren’t being properly supervised, and is also distracting for students who are working in classrooms. This playground is used by our Prep students to develop their gross motor skills. Thanks in advance for your assistance. Mackay Schools Futsal Comp. On Monday this week Northview entered two teams into the Mackay Schools Futsal competition. Both our under 10 and under 11 teams played amazingly well. Each player contributed to the team's success and represented the school with pride—displaying fantastic team work and sportsmanship. Both teams finished 3rd in their respective divisions which was a fine effort considering this was the first time students had played together. A number of Northview students were selected to go onto the next level in Brisbane in the September school holidays to represent North Queensland at the national school futsal championships. Braith, Roc, Shayla, Gabriel, Brayden S and Nayte were selected. A big thanks to Rachel and Che Moffat who organised and trained our teams for the competition. We really appreciate your help and support.
