From the Principal…
Dear Families,
What an evening of entertainment we had last Thursday night! Congratulations to
all the children, music tutors, band leaders and Nanette Stephen for presenting a
truly fantastic and thoroughly entertaining evening. The evening was
complemented by a wonderful display of our children’s art work. It was a fine
reflection of what has been happening in our art classes. Thanks to our Visual Arts
teacher, Stef Barrow, for her work in this area.
Our highly successful chess team competed and finished in first place in the
Northern Star Primary Open Chess Championships held at Research Primary School
last week. Congratulations and well done to all those children who participated
and represented the school; Xavier, Cedric, Carlvince, John, Minh, Andrew, Lachlan
and Justin. Well done to all - more trophies have been added to our trophy
cabinet!
Our 2017 Foundation children attended school on Tuesday this week and spent up
until lunchtime in their class groups for 2017. The level of school readiness is very
evident when you observe the high level of confidence being displayed amongst the
children. As announced in last week’s newsletter, the Foundation teachers for 2017
are Stephanie Rose, Rachel Abraham, Shelley Pappas and Louise Cardwell.
Next Monday (December 12th) all students will be celebrating with end of year class
parties followed by a whole school performance of ‘The Grinch’ in the afternoon.
All families are asked to bring a suitable gift in support our SRC fundraiser this
term, the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal. A very worthy cause indeed and an
important time of the year to acknowledge and support those families in the
community who may be finding things tough. We ask all families to donate one gift
each, unwrapped and suitable for anyone from a baby to a senior age. We will
collect these gifts, sort and box them on the stage and then pass on to the appeal.
It would be fantastic to be able to deliver 309 gifts to those in need at Xmas,
representing the 309 Deepdene families!
Next Wednesday (December 14th) we look forward to our Level 3 – 6 House
Swimming Carnival to be held at the Boroondara Sports Centre. This is one of the
highlights on our sporting calendar and a great opportunity to come along and
support the children. What a fun way to end the term!
End of Year Dates
As has been mentioned previously, due to an unusual year of term dates, the last 2
days of the school this year are scheduled for Monday, December 19th and Tuesday,
December 20th (half day). Having this combination of days so late in the year will
not be productive for school activities and for planning arrangements for many
families. I have had notification from many families that they will not be in
attendance on these last 2 days. With consideration to this we will plan on having
our annual Year 6 student/staff netball game on Friday, December 16th. We will
also have our final assembly and bid farewell to our Year 6 students on Friday,
December 16th. For those families who choose to send their children to school on
Monday, December 19th and for the morning on Tuesday, December 20th we will be continued on page 2…

School Commencement 2017
I know that some families have indicated that they will be overseas on extended
holidays during the school break. If your child will be returning after the
commencement of the school year 2017 it is important that the school has a written
note informing us of the intended return date. This is important information in
relation to the enrolment census and our funding allocation.
End of Term
Please note that children who ARE at school on Tuesday, December 20th will be
dismissed at 1.30pm.
Families with students in Years 3-6 may like to take up the opportunity of purchasing house coloured and named t-shirts from ‘Our House Spirit’. These t-shirts can be purchased online by following the links and can be delivered to your home.
Please note: Purchase of these items is purely optional, however the school will receive some reward benefits based on purchases. These items will be available to be purchased on an ongoing basis.
