HOW TIME FLIES ! BY HEIDI MORGAN

Time flies, so they say, and a while ago I decided to try an experiment to find out if

this is true. I went to the charity shop and bought a large glass storage jar, into which

I would put one item each day. It could be anything small and durable, but it must be unique in my

collection.

I began to fill the jar with tickets, bottle tops, things found or broken - easy at first, but later it was

sometimes difficult to find something new.

Today the jar was full, and I tipped out the contents to examine them. They completely covered the

top of my dining table. I was surprised at how many of the objects I could remember putting in there

as if it were yesterday. At the bottom of the jar, I found a scrap of paper on which I'd written the date

I started the experiment. It was almost exactly five years ago.

Looking at my varied collection, I came to this conclusion. Time does fly, but not straight like an ar-

row. It wanders like a butterfly, flitting here and flitting there, always searching for the next perfect

flower.

BEST SELLER BY SANDRA WELHAM

The book sat on the bedroom shelf gathering dust. I had promised myself that one day I would read it. I remembered the name on the cover and thought where do the ideas come from to encourage us to buy these unknown works of art. Shakespeare , Elliot and Grisham, names that spring to mind, but what about the 'new kids on the block' . Do we appreciate the hard work of the writer that helps to stimulate the minds and imagination of the readers. Does the cover always reveal the secrets within? James sat at his computer looking out at life in the big city- it was tough. He was determined to make this attempt a best seller. A book that would make him famous and secure his future. His mind was racing. Ideas bounced around in his mind. It was time to start his dream. Just then he heard a voice..”Your tea, is getting cold”. James 's mind began to drift . Tomorrow would be an-other day. A day to write his best seller. A day to go out and play. Yes, James is only five years old, but with an imagination older than his years.

Heidi was not at the meeting to collect her prize - so her story was read by the Editor, Jazz

... AND IN REPLY TO THE PERSON WHO COMPLAINED THE SHORT STORY COMPETITION EXCLUDED HIM

Dear Members,

What a year! I didn't at first realise what an important year this would be.

The Queen’s Jubilee, the Olympic Games and of course our 5th Anniversary.

It's at times like this that you realise how important these events are to

us all. I know that many of us will have watched the pageantry of the Jubi-

lee Celebrations, and have been looking forward to the competition of the Olympic

games. I know which events I will be glued to, but I am sure that we wish all competitors

the very best of luck . They have trained for a number of years

to reach their peak of performance and whether they repre-

sent the UK , Spain or anywhere else, we cannot help but be

proud of their commitment and dedication to their sport.

I also at this time want to thank everyone for their hard work

and dedication to our U3A . I hope that all of you have a super

summer break. I know that number of you will be staying in the

valley, but others are off to far distant lands . Maybe they

would consider sharing their experiences at one of our meet-

ings. Do let me know.

Have a safe, enjoyable and healthy summer break, and we will

see you all again in September.

Best wishes , Bob.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT, Bob Welham.

Circle of Men

Men have been sitting in circles for thousands of years. Most of all these men were elders who were re-spected for their wisdom. Because of my involvement with the ManKindProject (MKP) , on the website www.maturingmen.net I found the following text about the relevance of men's groups:

“ Traditional tribal cultures had a lot of wisdom still relevant to our times. The warrior had a crucial role in protecting the tribe and hunting food. Men beyond warrior age were elders. The role of the elder needs skills which many men in our times lack, but would be enriched if they learned: collaborating with other mature men, and supporting younger ones, for example. How-ever, we don’t live in a tribal culture which makes this easy and natural. This is one reason why men’s groups are so vital, to encourage and recognise these traditional, archetypal roles. ”

I am really excited to be able to invite you to our first Open Men's Circle on

Wednesday 13th of June 2012 In the room above bar L'Assut (formerly La Risa) in Jalón, starting at 14.45 for 15.00 hrs.

As the space in the room is limited, please let me know if you will be present or not. Looking forward to meeting

you.

Kindest regards from Bruno Goffin

[email protected] 690 19 29 76 http://brunoscircleofmen.blogspot.com.es/

The Newsletter has had an email from Bruno Goffin, recently back from Cape Town. He asks that we tell you about his latest project - see below. It all sounds intriguing, but at the same time, we have to stress that this is U3A member Bruno’s own idea and is not a U3A group !

Dead Penguins - I never knew this!

Did you ever wonder why there are no dead penguins on the ice in Antarctica?

Where do they go?

Wonder no more ! ! !

It is a known fact that the penguin is a very ritualistic bird which lives an extremely ordered and complex

life. The penguin is very committed to its family and

will mate for life, as well as maintain a form of compassionate contact

with its offspring throughout its life.

If a penguin is found dead on the ice surface, other members of the family and social circle have been

known to dig holes in the ice, using their vestigial wings and beaks, until the hole is deep enough for the

dead bird to be rolled into, and buried. Continued .......

.. And an email from Bob, our President. You may have noticed that Bob always puts a picture of a penguin on his monthly “note” in the Newsletter. We have wondered why - but it seems that Bob is a penguin expert ! He sends up this interesting factoid ....

The male penguins then gather in a circle around the fresh grave and sing:

"Freeze a jolly good fellow." "Freeze a jolly good fellow."

Then, they kick him in the ice hole.

You really didn't believe that I know anything about penguins, did you?

It's so easy to fool OLD people. ( I fell for it, too!!!)

Sometimes living in Spain can be a lonely experience, but

being a member of the U3A Vall del Pop means you are one of

our community and a friend.

Friends look after each other, and recently at the general meeting I was ap-

pointed to the role of Almoner. A post that I hope I can do well.

It's really about making sure that you know that we care. Maybe you have

not been feeling too well, have been in hospital, had a small accident, then

sometime a chat, a call, a card can bring a smile back to your face.

Let me know if anyone of our members needs to “ know that we care”

on 965581353 or email [email protected]

Have a great summer break... Sandra Welham.

Having just returned from my holiday from Mallorca with the U3A yesterday, I was asked to write a summary of my experience. ...

We departed promptly from Jalon rastro at the appointed time of 8.a.m. The day was bright and sunny, and the journey to Valencia passed without incidence and we seemed to arrive quite quickly. I had not heard that we were to have a guided tour, by coach of the city and so I was very pleased and surprised. I really enjoyed the tour from a different vantage point, seeing things previously unnoticed. We then departed for the airport, and boarded our flight. The plane Air Berlin surprised me with the lovely leather seats, and even though it was only a thirty or forty min. flight, we were given a soft drink and biscuits. The hotel was unimpressive from the exterior, but we all had large rooms with a fridge and small kitchen. The staff were very helpful and friendly, and there were lots of bars and restaurants just a short walk away..... and of course a beautiful beach. The following day, our Gandia Tours rep... Rolf, had arranged a guided tour to the breathtakingly beauti-ful Capital city of Palma. The Port was full of very beautiful yachts and also a cruise liner. On the town side of the port, were stunning green lawns edged with tall palm trees and surrounded by red shrub roses . Dominating the background was the uniquely designed Cathedral. We were given a tour of the old city, with the narrow streets, boutiques and bustling bars and restaurants. A few of us managed to see the inside of the Cathedral, and it was of course splendid, with lovely stained glass windows. I am so glad I saw it. One of the other trips which particularly impressed me, was the trip to Soller, where we travelled by tram to the Port, then went on an historic train dating back from 1912 and immaculately maintained and pol-ished. The mountain scenery was stunning and very green. The end of the holiday came all too soon and it was time to say goodbye to everyone. It had been nice to have such a lovely friendly group and also some new people to meet. Carol West

*****************************************************************

What do you say about a holiday that had it all.

Good weather, good hotel, good food, good crowd of people, and excellent value for money.

This holiday was all things to all men, as you could do as much or as little as you pleased.

Trips were available to the places of note on the island, PALMA, SOLLER ( including the picturesque

train journey ), CAVES OF DRACH ( including a visit to the Mallorcan pearl factory ) Our hotel was

located in the ideal small town on Santa Ponsa, which was close enough for browsing the shops ( and

bars !! ) as time allowed between excursions.

A lot of effort went into the organisation of this trip, so Anne & Derek Martyr deserve a very big

round of applause, and very big thank you for making this a memorable holiday.

FOR

SALE

“ DOG TRAINING I am intrigued that Bruno has opened dog walking classes on Sunday mornings to demonstrate his dog walking tech-niques whilst the regular Sunday morning walks continue. Happy hunting, everyone.

However, I feel that there is no one right way to train owners and dogs, and training can and should be adapted to indi-viduals and their particular dogs. There is so much character and different personalities in humans and dogs alike. I and my dogs found methods of training in the dog club to which Bruno refers which suited us, and I shall always be grateful to those "amateurs" who give their time week after week freely, helping successfully to train owners to train their dogs and to produce happy dogs. So, come on, everyone, I am sure that all of you, whether you are dog owners or not, have something to say about train-ing methods - good or bad JW and dogs! ”

THE GENERAL MEETING - JUNE 7TH. EAT YE ROSEBUDS WHILE YE MAY !

Dick Handscombe once more travelled to Jalon to give us all a deeper insight into his tried and tested methods of eating home-produced produce for health. Why not rosebuds? He asked. Why eat sprayed and treated fruit and vegetables when it’s so easy to grow

your own? Try www.wddty (what doctors don’t tell you). He also

recommended a visit to the Heretat de Pere near Quatretonda for a

range of organic cheeses and other produce. www.heretat.com. Dick then kindly

gave away copies of his little green book in return for a donation to HELP. Thank you so much, Dick, for your generosity and all your advice!! WARNING FROM ELAINE HORTON. Elaine warned the U3A that strikes and austerity measures will probably mean a severe cut-back in medical services in the Valley over the Summer. Home visits will especially be affected, so be prepared to travel to clinics to get your dressings changed, and, if you are a driver, no doubt extra trips will be necessary to travel to these clinics. Nothing is certain yet - but HELP shops will be able to keep you informed.

Diamond Jubilee Celebrations at Salamanca !

What a wonderful day to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee event with

a fantastic luncheon at the Salamanca Restaurant, in Jalon.

60 members started the event with a refreshing Pimms cocktail ,

served out in the courtyard. The restaurant was decorated with

banners, balloons and flags which added to the occasion.

A board was decorated with reminders from the past, such

as children used to play in the streets and got a clip around the ear

if naughty, women had Toni Perms, 4 blackjacks or fruit salads cost

a 1d, and Teddy Boys had quiffs and wore brothel creepers.

Members quickly got into the

spirit of the event with a Diamond Jubilee Quiz and lots of nos-

talgic tunes from the early part of the Queen's reign. With our

singing, we tried to 'raise the roof ' and this made us all feel

very patriotic. Vera Lynn's version of 'We'll Meet Again' and

'White Cliffs of Dover' appeared to be very popular, even if we

weren't too sure of the words, but our rendition of 'Land of

Hope and Glory' was word perfect. The proms had nothing on us!

A toast was given to the Queen and

our rendition of 'God Save the

Queen ' made us aware that we still

have very strong links with the Brit-

ain and what it stands for. We all re-

alise what a fantastic job the Queen

is doing, and how she is held in such high esteem.

I know that many of us would like to have been involved more with

the celebration, but we did our best and I think everyone enjoyed

the event. Our thanks to the Salamanca for a lovely meal and cre-

ating the wonderful atmosphere, that helped to make this day so

successful.

We wish her Majesty a long and successful reign and look forward

to celebrating the next milestone.

U3A member Stuart Wishart is going to speak, and promises us something called “From Tablespoons to Take Off (How and why aeroplanes fly) “, and adds ..."Come along and find out the reason these great silver birds go up into the sky and come down to earth again. It may help dispel any lingering fears about flying. I promise to include some jokes.”
