Principal’s Message
Dear Parents, Carers and Community,
Welcome to this edition of Tanduringie State School’s newsletter. You will discover
a range of highlights and learning achievements from across our classrooms in
the newsletter items that follow.
School Opinion Survey — now open
You are warmly invited to participate in this year’s online Parent/Caregiver School
Opinion Survey and have your say about what your child’s school does well, and
how it can improve. Participation in the online survey is anonymous and all infor-
mation that you provide will be treated confidentially. Your feedback will be pro-
vided back to your child’s school in such a way that you cannot be identified.
The access codes for the online survey are not linked to individuals, and you can-
not be identified in the survey results that will be reported back to the school, or
by the department. The online survey will be available until Friday, 25 August
2017 and should take less than ten minutes to complete. To access the survey,
please refer to the Parent/Caregiver instruction sheet that is attached to this
newsletter.
We would truly appreciate your feedback about what our school is doing well,
and how we can improve. Thank you in advance for your participation.
Congratulations to our South Burnett Athletics representatives!
Well done to Eliza Lawless, Charlotte Bourke, Charlotte Winks, George Wilson,
Bryce Spencer, Lachlan Cullen, Elsie McKenzie, Isabelle Winks, Mackenzie
Bourke, and Alexander Fitzsimons for representing Tanduringie at the South Bur-
nett Athletics trials this week. We are super-proud of your achievements!
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The Premier’s’ Reading Challenge runs through until Friday,
25th August. For a student to successfully complete the chal-
lenge they must read or experience a number of books. Ex-
periencing a book can include classroom or at home activi-
ties such as shared reading, listening and reading along with
a book, or being read to. Students are encouraged to select
a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability. Please ask
your child to record their reading with their classroom teacher.
Children’s Book Week
Children’s Book Week is coming up this term in Week 7! This year’s Book Week
theme is Escape to Everywhere! At assembly on Monday 21st August we will hold
a ‘Favourite Book Character’ Parade and celebrate the joy of reading all
throughout the week!

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
Be a Learner Be Respectful Be Safe
As I mentioned in our last newsletter, a school priority for 2017 is Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) – a whole-
school approach to building and supporting academic and social success for all students.
Each morning, as students walk through our school gate, they are greeted by these three positive and clearly-
stated school rules. At Tanduringie our three school rules form the basis for our healthy and positive academic
and social culture.
Each fortnight, through our newsletter, I will communicate the PBL Focus Skills that we will explicitly teach and
reinforce at school. Please take the time to discuss and reinforce these same focus messages with your child at
home.
School photos
School photos are now available to order through the school office or online until Tuesday, 8th August.
P&C Meeting — next week
You are warmly invited to attend the next P&C Meeting to be held here at school on Monday, 7th August
at 7:00pm.
Thank you for your continued support of our school and community.

Dear Parents, In Maths our Preps have been learning all about collecting data using ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ questions and interpreting simple data displays. They have all been doing a fantastic job. Our Year Ones are learning all about addition. We have been looking at using a variety of strategies to solve addition problems. In English we are still learning about the differences between imaginative and informative texts. The students had the opportunity to complete an activity on being an animal expert. They had to tell the class facts about their chosen ani-mal. In Science we have been learning about the weather and how the weather can affect our lives. We have had great fun being weather watchers, recording the weather and looking at the clouds. Alex has returned from his family China visit and was very excited to share with his class some souvenirs and pictures from his travels. We have now included a sight word book in the homework and reading folders as many of you are aware. This is just another resource to use to practise these sight words with your child to strengthen their knowledge.
Thank you for all your support.

Welcome to Week Four! The 2/3/4 classroom has been its usual busy self. The students have continued to work hard across all our key learn-ing areas.
In our English lessons we have continued to explore the importance of scanning and rereading texts in order to help answer comprehension questions. We are working really hard on self-monitoring our reading to make sure it makes sense, sounds right and the words look right. During home reading you may have noticed an increase in your child/children’s rereading to self-correct errors or to make their reading sound more fluent. This is great!! In the coming week the students will be reading The Lorax and working on a retell of this story from a different per-spective. We have constructed success criteria to help us know what is expected for the task.
In our Mathematics work we continue to work hard on learning about numbers. This week the year fours learnt about numbers into the mil-lions, the year threes revisited counting patterns while the year twos spent some time on addition and subtraction concepts. In our HASS work this week we discussed the significance of the early explorers. Students are in the middle of completing a timeline about when the explorers went on their different journeys. In the next fort-night the students will explore either Christopher Columbus or Vasco da Gama. This will be a great way to practise those very important research skills and learn some interesting facts and information along the way.
Today the 3-6 students met with students from Cooyar SS and our visiting engineers from Stanwell to gain some feedback about their bridges.
Hopefully our bridges held up well and there won’t be too many modifi-cations to make.

It’s that time of year again for Jason and myself to venture down to Brisbane for the Royal Brisbane Show. This year we are only taking led steers and prime cattle so hopefully we might get a few sleep ins. This year we say goodbye to Red, Helix, Hank, McFly, Star, Aubrey Junior and Mighty Mouse. Good luck boys!!
If you have any questions or con-cerns please don’t hesitate to con-tact the school.
Kind regards,
Megan and Rhonda

We have enjoyed reading Emily Rodda’s fantasy novel, Rowan of
Rin, to develop our understanding of character development in rela-
tion to plot and setting. We have now begun to draft an opening
chapter for our very own fantasy quest! We have continued to focus
on our whole class and guided reading to develop our fluency and
increase our background knowledge about the fantasy genre.
