PRonunciation guide

Anna Biller Collier, who coached women’s beach volleyball teams in a pair of Olympics, is in her fourth season as USC’s first-ever head coach of women’s sand volleyball with a 61-15(.803)overall record.

Collier guided the Women of Troy to a 23-3 mark in 2014 and a second straight semifinal appearance in the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship. Her top team of Kirby Burnham and Sara Hughes won the AVCA pairs national title; the second straight pairs crown for the Trojans. She was named the 2014 AVCA NationalCoachoftheYear.

USC was 16-8 in 2013 with an AVCA semifinals appearance. Burnham and Stevi Robinson won the pairs national title and became USC’s first-ever All-Americans in the sport. Collier took USC to a 7-4 record in 2012, the sport’s inaugural season as an NCAA emerging sport, and sent two USC teams to the pairs championship of the first AVCA pairs tourney.

She has led two U.S. teams to fifth-place Olympic finishes: Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno (1996 Atlanta Games) and Annette Davis and Jenny Johnson (2000 Sydney Games). Collier has coached beach volleyball since 1990, and has worked with standouts Misty May-Treanor, Kerri Walsh, Nicole Branagh, Rachel Wacholder and Angie Akers.

As head coach for the U.S. Senior A2 Beach National Team, she led teams to first and fifth place finishes at the 2012 World University Championships in Brazil. She coached U26 and U23 A2 U.S. squads at the 2010 Team FISU World University Championships in Turkey and coached the U26 U.S. squads at the 2011 championships in China. She served as coach of Team USA at the 2013 Summer World University Games in Russia.

On top of her duties, she is a USAV High Performance coach and a founding member of the USAV Beach Coaching Accreditation Program Cadre. She is currently a faculty member (teaching a variety of kinesiology classes) at Santa Monica (Calif.) Junior College, where she has spent the past 32 years. She began as the women’s cross country and track and field coach, and won three California State championships.

Collier played professionally on the beach for seven seasons between 1978 and 1989, and posted 10 Top 10 finishes among her 20 tournament appearances. At USC (as Anna Biller) she was on the track and field, volleyball, and swimming teams and was a two-time All-American in track as a member of the 800-meter (1975) and 400-meter (1977) relay teams. Collier earned a degree in physical education from USC in 1977.

2015 uSc Quick factSLAST TIME OUT: The Women of Troy ran the gamut last week with a 5-0 win over Concordia, a 4-1 win over Loyola Marymount, and a 3-2 win over No. 3-ranked Pepperdine to stay undefeated. USC won matches over the Eagles and the Lions at Merle Norman Stadium and later became the first team ever to defeat the Waves at Zuma Beach when sophomores Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes delivered the clinching point in the 3-2 win over Pepperdine. The 15 straight wins is the best start to open a season by the Trojans and is just six short of the program’s longest winning streak of 21 set in 2014.

CARDINAL GOLD CLASS: The Trojans will celebrate their seniors in pre-match ceremonies prior to the USC-LMU match (April 9). The members of the class are quite varied in overall experience but it does include the first-ever four-year member of the USC sand volleyball team. Eve Ettinger left her indoor career following her freshman fall season (2011) and has played in each of the Trojans’ four seasons on the sand. While she is the first senior of that stature that the Women of Troy will bid farewell to, she is joined by EmilyYoung as members of the inaugural USC sand squad. Young also played in the spring of 2012, but left the team for two seasons in order to concentrate on her indoor game. Alexa Stonish joined the Trojans in 2013 as a sophomore transfer from Stetson while BriaRuss dropped her indoor career to play exclusively on the sand in 2013 as well. The youngest Trojan in USC’s senior class is Meg Norton who was an indoor national champion with UCLA before she transferred to USC to play on the sand this season as a graduate student.

SCOUTINGREPORT: LoyolaMarymount (2-8) started the season ranked No. 6, but has fallen short of expectations with eight losses. The two victories were 4-1 decisions over Bakersfield and Pacific. At the top court, Betsi Metter and Sara Sponcil own two wins over USC’s Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes. The Trojans are 12-0 in all-time meetings with the Lions. SanFrancisco(8-5) is on a three-match streak with wins over Sacramento State, Pacific, and Cal Poly. USC will meet the Dons for the first time. USF and LMU will meet in a neutral match at Merle Norman Stadium following their matches with the Trojans. USC has met both Santa Clara and Boise State once each and earned 5-0 victories over both Bronco squads at neutral sites in 2014.

TRACK THE TROJANS: Fans of the Women of Troy can follow @USCSandVBall on Twitter for score updates during home matches and select road matches. The Trojans are also active on Instagram (USCSandVBall) and on Facebook (USCSandVBall).

POLL POSITION: USC opened the season ranked No. 2 in the AVCA Coaches Top 10 poll and was tabbed No. 3 in the first-ever DiG Magazine Top 20 poll. The Women of Troy seized the top spot in both polls on March 23 following their victory over then No. 1-ranked Hawaii on the road. The Trojans received their first-ever No. 1 ranking in 2014 and maintained the position for much of the season, before the they fell to eventual AVCA champion Pepperdine in the national semifinals. In 2013, USC started the season ranked third and finished in fourth.

TROJANSINTVLAND:The Women of Troy appear on television in eight matches this spring. USC’s match at Hawai’i was broadcast live on Honolulu’s OCSports/OC16 channels. At home, the Trojans’ matches at Merle Norman Stadium will be carried live by the Pac-12 Networks on March 24 and 26, and on April 2 and 9. USC holds the distinction as having appeared in the first-ever live broadcast of a women’s collegiate dual match on Thursday, March 27, 2014, when USC hosted Cal State Northridge.

CARRYINGTHOSECROWNS:Sophomores Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes claimed pairs’ titles at both the USC Tournament (March 14) and the Queen of the Beach Challenge (March 21). The duo is 21-3 overall (12-3 in duals) with a perfect 9-0 mark in tournament matches. Hughes is right where she was last season when she and partner Kirby Burnham won the same two titles and then went on to win the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge crown, the Pac-12 Invitational title, and eventually the AVCA Pairs National Championship.

CALL THE COPS: The Trojans have gone 5-0 in nine out of 15 dual matches this season. In fact, USC is 15-0 at five, in dual matches and is 67-8overall in individual matches. The Trojans have produced this mark using only one pair that has collegiate experience together. Only court four where sophomores Nicolette Martin and Allie Wheeler team up for a 39-8 all-time record has played together before this spring. The other four Trojan pairs lined up in duals are newly formed for 2015.

2015 uSc Sand Volleyball

ALL-AMERICANNATIONALCHAMPIONS: The Trojans have celebrated four AVCA All-Americans and have produced the last two AVCA Pairs National Champions. Kirby Burnham teamed with SteviRobinsonto produce a 25-4 record and won the 2013 pairs title. They were each later named the first-ever sand volleyball All-Americans in USC history. In 2014, Burnham returned to Gulf Shores, Ala., and reclaimed her crown with Sara Hughes after the duo completed a remarkable 42-4 campaign including a perfect 21-0 in tournament matches. Burnham repeated as an All-American while Hughes received her first distinction; USC’s fourth overall.

BLOODLINES: Freshman Lorna Brandt has had Trojan blood running through her veins since the day she was born. Brandt’s grandfather Chuck Leimbach was a three-year letterwinning tight end (1954-56) for the USC football team and her uncle Joe Leimbach played snapper for four years (1980-83). Each of Brandt’s parents (David and Gretchen) attended the University, as did her late uncle Pete Leimbach who was a member of the 1989 men’s volleyball team.

OH, CANADA: Sophomore SophieBukovec is the Trojans’ first Canadian player. Bukovec hails from the country’s most populous city of Toronto, which is also the provincial capital of Ontario. She once took the medal podium alongside fellow sophomores Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes. Representing Canada, Bukovec and her partner Tia Miric won the gold medal at the 2014 U21 World Championships in Larnaka, Cyprus, an event at which Claes and Hughes teamed to represent the U.S. and won bronze medals. Bukovec is the program’s second international player. NatasaSiljkovic, an indoor volleyball convert, played two seasons on the sand (2013-14), and hailed from Uzice, Serbia.

SOMETHING BREWIN’: Graduate student-athlete Meg Norton may don the cardinal and gold with the Trojans, but she used to sport the blue and gold for USC’s crosstown rival UCLA. Norton was a member of Bruins’ indoor volleyball team (2010-13) as an outside hitter/defensive specialist, and was a part of UCLA’s 2011 NCAA championship squad. She was also a member of UCLA’s inaugural sand volleyball team (2013) and paired with Kelly Reeves to produce an 11-11 record to receive an invitation to the 2013 AVCA pairs’ championship.

STRANGEPHENOMENON: Junior Alexa Strange’s mother Tara once was able to watch her daughter play, but only as an infant. Due to a rare syndrome, she lost her vision some 20 years ago. Though she can no longer see, Tara—a USC graduate—still enjoys Alexa’s matches as someone describes the action to her. Strange draws inspiration from her mother, who despite her blindness is an impressive cook and baker.

SIBLING RIVALRY: Freshman Olivia Asprey has an older sister Sophie Asprey who is a junior on the Pepperdine sand volleyball team. The elder Asprey won the 2014 AVCA title with the Waves while playing from the No. 5 position. Both sisters attended Liberty Christian School near Dallas, Texas. Olivia was born in Hamilton, Bermuda, where her family lived for five years, while the elder was born in London, England, and made her way to Pepperdine after spending a year at Tulane in New Orleans, La. Despite the many corners of the earth that the sisters have been, they now find each other on opposite sides of the net, but in the same city.

BIGBROTHERISWATCHING: Sophomore Sara Hughes has a big fan in her older brother Connor Hughes. The elder Hughes was a member of UC Irvine’s 2012 and 2013 NCAA championship teams and was chosen as the tournament MVP in 2013. While he has two team championship rings, Sara can boast that she is an individual national champion as the 2014 AVCA Pairs titleholder with Kirby Burnham. Hughes’ older sister Lauren also played volleyball – she was a four-year letterwinning outside hitter at Fairfield (2007-10).

LET’S GET IT STARTED: Sophomore Kelly Claes could have been shopping for prom dresses. Instead, she played a key role in the Trojans’ 2014 season success. Claes completed high school graduation requirements a semester early and left El Dorado HS to join the Women of Troy as a Volleyball Magazine Girls Fab 50 choice last spring. With her arrival, the Trojans signed the top sand volleyball recruit in consecutive years. USC signed top sand recruit Sara Hughes in 2013.

AHEARTFORART: Senior Alexa Stonish is a fine arts major at USC’s famed Roski School of Art and Design. She emphasizes in and is an enthusiast in photography. Sophomore Nicolette Martin is also a fine arts major who specializes in graphite and pencil-sketch drawings. Both Stonish and Martin have had their work featured in the Artletics on-campus exhibit that displays the works of USC student-athletes.

Merle Norman Stadium is the new on-campus home to the USC women’s sand volleyball program. Located on the east side of University Park Campus on Figueroa Street across from the Galen Center, it features three courts with sand from the U.S. Olympic Training Center. The palm tree-encircled stadium also has bleachers and a grass berm for spectator seating, a scoreboard and audio system, lighting, restrooms, showers, and multiple team storage areas.

Ground was broken to build the new venue in July of 2012 under the generous donations of Jack and Helen Nethercutt and John and Melinda Muller, and a large sum from an anonymous donor. The Mullers have a daughter (Erica) on the 2013 squad. A USC alumnus, Jack Nethercutt served as vice president of marketing and later President of Merle Norman Cosmetics in 1973. He left the company to pursue other ventures but returned to his presidency in March of 2002 and now serves as Chairman of the Board with his wife Helen as Vice Chairman.

The stadium is named for Nethercutt’s great aunt and namesake of the cosmetics corporation, Merle Nethercutt Norman. Jack and Helen are active in Los Angeles non-profits and charities and are Galen Founders, Scholarship Club members, and Conquest supporters of the USC Trojan Marching Band.

On Thursday, March 7, 2013, USC officially opened and dedicated Merle Norman Stadium in conjunction with the sand volleyball program’s alumni match. The Nethercutts were on hand to cut the ribbon with first Trojan head coach Anna Collier and athletic director Pat Haden. USC All-America alumnae and Olympic beach volleyball silver medalists Jennifer Kessy and April Ross christened the sand in their return to campus for the special match.

The Women of Troy played their first dual match in the stadium on Sunday, March 10, 2013, and earned a 4-1 victory over Loyola Marymount. USC produced a 7-3 mark on its home sand at Merle Norman Stadium in 2013 and was undefeated in 2014 at 8-0. The Trojans are 23-3 all-time at MNS.

OH,THEPLACESYOU’LLGO: The USC sand program is on the rise, and the nation knows. Since 2012, the Trojans have acquired student-athletes that have chosen to transfer in order to compete on one of the top teams in the country. Even USC’s two oldest traditional football rivals are represented on the Trojan roster. Freshman Jo Kremer played indoor volleyball at Notre Dame in the fall of 2014; senior Meg Norton was a member of UCLA’s national championship indoor volleyball team. Junior Alexa Strange gave up the indoor game at Nebraska to join the Trojans while sophomore SophieBukovecdid the same after a successful season at Long Beach State. One of the program’s first transfers was senior Alexa Stonish who came across the country from Stetson’s young program.

STAFF INFECTION: This spring, the Trojans brought in the extensive expertise of Olympic gold-medal winner Dain Blanton as the team’s volunteer assistant coach. Blanton won beach volleyball gold in the 2000 Sydney Games with partner Eric Fonoimoana. He also played in the 2004 games in Athens, and currently serves as an analyst for the Pac-12 Networks for men’s volleyball matches. Blanton replaces the Trojans’ former assistant Misty May-Treanor, who was a three-time Olympic gold-medal winner on the sand. USC boasts one of the most broadly experienced coaching staffs in the nation. AndrewFuller is a former Virginia Tech player who also coaches a pro beach pair. Each assistant brings great depth to the Trojans’ ability to run drills and develop skills in addition to some valuable experience on the international level.

USC ALUMS ON THE BEACH: USC women’s volleyball players have shined on the pro beach world circuit, both internationally and domestically. Some of the top Women of Troy stars have included 2012 London Olympic silver medalists April Ross and Jennifer Kessy (winners of 24 tournaments, including the 2009 FIVB World Championship); Tracy (Lindquist) Jones (13-year pro); Geena Urango, Jessica Gysin, and Keao Burdine (young beach stars); Bibiana Candelas (indoor All-American who won the first-ever Collegiate Nationals Beach Championship in 2006); Paula Weishoff (an indoor Olympian and Volleyball Hall of Fame inductee); and Miki McFadden (indoor Olympian). The USC men also have a strong tradition including such pro tourney winners as Tim Hovland, Adam Johnson, PatPowers, SteveTimmons, SteveObradovich, and RonLang.

§On Jan. 17, 2015, NCAA Division II and Division III membership approved sand volleyball as a championship allowing it to advance from the emerging sports for women list and become a full-fledged NCAA championship in spring 2016. Sand volleyball, which was approved to become a championship by Division I membership in October 2014, will be the 90th NCAA championship. The championship itself will have an eight-team bracket, which will be played in a double-elimination format.

§USC is among more than 50 schools that field a women’s sand volleyball program as the sport begins its fourth and final season as an emerging sport.

§NCAA sand volleyball competition is similar to that of collegiate tennis. Each team competition is called a dual and consists of five matches between pairs. The winning team needs to win at least three of the five matches. The separate matches will be best-of-three set competitions, with rally scoring to 21 points in the first two sets and to 15 in the third. Teams must win sets by at least two points. Some competitions will also feature a pairs’ championship through bracket play.

§Players switch sides of the court every seven points in a 21-point set and every five points in a 15-point set.

§Coaches may communicate with players only during timeouts/between sets.§Players must wear a two-piece uniform (i.e. shorts or briefs and a top), or a

one-piece, but not the traditional bikini worn in pro beach events.§Scholarships are awarded on an equivalency basis, with the ceiling on the

number of allowable scholarships set to grow in coming years. Players with indoor volleyball scholarships can participate in sand volleyball, but players receiving sand volleyball aid may not compete on the indoor team.
