ANNUAL FUND REPORT 2016-2017

This year’s Annual Fund Report showcases the impact of your philanthropy on the life of University of The Bahamas. No matter how small, your contribution has an enduring effect on our students, faculty, staff and alumni. Collectively, these donations meet critical needs which cannot be subsidized through public funding alone. This was an historic period, with

University of The Bahamas receiving its charter on 10th November 2016. For the 2016-2017 academic year the Annual Fund experienced a 13 percent increase (reaching $69,504.53) over the previous year. This was due in large part to several strategic fundraising and engagement initiatives, primarily the inaugural UBFIT Fun Run Walk Skate.

The Business Plan Competition held on 20th March, 2017, showcased the diverse talents of UB students across the academy. Students prepared comprehensive business plans for original ideas and presented to a panel of industry professionals and entrepreneurs. The aim was to create an environment for students to develop new, viable ventures and business opportunities.

Eighteen submissions were presented and the most innovative business plans won the top spots. First place was awarded to Benjamin Davis for his Drive Green Rental concept; he received a $700 cash prize. The second place winner was Candice Webb for her Wilbur Farms business plan; she received a $500 cash prize. Third place was awarded to Charis McPhee for SubWing Adventures; she received a $300 cash prize.

Majority Rule Symposium In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Majority Rule on 10th January 2017, University of The Bahamas (UB) launched a bi-annual symposium highlighting the importance of this historic period of Bahamian history. The symposium engaged scholars in the fields of anthropology, sociology, psychology and history to analyse the meaning, perception, discourse, rhetoric and repercussions of Majority Rule. Dr. Eugene Newry, Bahamas Ambassador to the United States was the keynote speaker, addressing the topic, “The Dream of 67.”

Support for University Education

Durning the 2016-2017 academic year, six students from various educational disciplines benefitted from Financial Aid towards tuition as a result of the Annual Fund. The students were Nathalie Bullard, Pharmacy major; Duran Dean, Business Administration and Accounting major; Justin Munroe, Physical Education major; Delecia Rolle, Nursing major; Shahiem Symonette, Mechanical Engineering major, and Jeffery McKenzie, Architecture major.

Dynamic Chemistry Learning From the Annual Fund, a $12,723 disbursement helped to defray the cost of a Spectrophotometer for UB’s Chemistry lab at the Oakes Field Campus, matching a similar disbursement from Sun Oil Limited. A Spectrophotometer records the interaction of a chemical substance with infrared light to allow students to deduce the structure of an unknown chemical. Dr. Danny Davis, Organic Chemistry Professor, initially secured the Annual Fund disbursement and was instrumental in Sun Oil’s decision to provide the balance. “This is a modern instrument that is being facilitated by Sun Oil. The University and the Chemistry department are truly pleased and in the long run our students will be eternally grateful for this acquisition,” he noted.
