place to live and visit by contributing to the cultural development of the city and New Jersey. With these two choruses, Mr. Loatman realized his dream had come true.

The newly formed chorus, under

the artistic direction of Richard Loatman and the newly formed board of trustees under the leadership of Stan Szalewicz, worked hard to give this chorus a good foundation. Th is included crafting a mission statement, creating bylaws, obtaining corporate and non-profi t status with the state of New Jersey and the IRS, and organizing a recording session at Trinity Episcopal Church, Trenton to produce a promotional CD.

Our StoryIn the fall of 2005, Richard M. Loatman was asked

to coordinate a Christmas concert for St. James (R.C.) Church in Trenton. Calling on his 30 years of musical and theatrical experience he assembled a mixed chorus of 42 voices which included a chamber ensemble of 10. Over the course of four Sunday evenings, the two groups met and learned a wide variety of seasonal music – sacred and secular, traditional and popular, accompanied and a cappella. On December 30, 2005 (under the name Schola Cantorum) the singers presented their fi rst concert Songs for the Christmas Season. Th e concert was a rousing success. Th e singers agreed that the rehearsals and the performance were a musically satisfying experience. At the time no one knew that this event would be the impetus for the founding of a new chorus. Th e chamber group added to its ranks and became the Capital Singers of Trenton and the larger group grew and became the Trenton Community Singers. It had long been a dream of Richard to have a positive impact on the city of Trenton. He wanted to highlight Trenton as a

As the popularity of the Capital Singers and the Trenton

Community Singers grew so did their ranks and the number of performance opportunities. Th e choruses, now with Marita Sciarrotta Watson as board chairperson, were well on their way to becoming the Choral Voice of the Capital Region.

Over the following years Artistic Director Richard

Loatman, Assistant Conductor Ellen Dondero and the two groups have had the privilege to share the stage with Sinfonietta Nova of West Windsor (NJ premiere of Karl Jenkins’ Stabat Mater) and the Warminster Symphony (Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy). Th e choruses’ performances and community outreach have included concerts in Bay Head and Beach Haven, Grounds for Sculpture, Plainfi eld, West Windsor, Princeton, the Trent House and Th e City Museum at Ellarslie Mansion. In addition they have performed for the Mill Hill House tour, the 85th Anniversary of Congregation Adath Israel in Lawrenceville and the dedication of the New Jersey World War II Memorial in Trenton. Th e recording of a CD - Legacy 2014: A year

with Capital Singers and Trenton Community Singers was a highlight of the past season. Most recently the two groups merged together as Capital Singers of Trenton and along with the Trenton Festival Chamber Orchestra performed TE DEUM (Haydn and Hayes) at Sacred Heart Church in Trenton.

In this 10th anniversary year Capital Singers of Trenton continue their

mission to be the Choral Voice of the Capital Region. Th e highlights for the coming season will include collaborations once again with Sinfonietta Nova (Rutter Requiem) and the Warminster Symphony (“A Family Holiday” Concert), a performance honoring Veterans in Princeton, an appearance as part of the Patriots Week celebration in downtown Trenton, and an annual concert in Beach Haven, NJ. Th ese concerts will include selections ranging from classical to modern and from patriotic to gospel as well as “choral gems” from the past ten years. Joining Capital Singers of Trenton will be local musicians and guest soloists Deborah Ford, Keith Spencer and Broadway and concert star Ciarán Sheehan. m

Over the past ten years we have performed at public

events and concerts, at churches, museums and schools. We have partnered with other choral organizations as far north as Plainfi eld and south as Bridgeton. Th ere were many opportunities to sing in Pennsylvania: Makefi eld, Dolyestown and Warminster. We had no idea that we would perform with orchestras; that was not even

in our vision. Now Sinfonietta Nova and the Warminster Symphony are regularly on our concert schedules. Major choral works have included the Daniel Pinkham Christmas Cantata, Beethoven Choral Fantasy, Haydn Te Deum, Faure Requiem, Mark Hayes Te Deum and the upcoming Rutter Requiem.

It has been a diffi cult journey, but a very rewarding one. …From dream to reality …From question mark to exclamation mark …From anonymity

to notoriety. I wish to thank all of those who have made this journey such a successful one: the singers, the staff , the audience and friends. No organization succeeds without the shared vision of many. We will continue long past these fi rst ten years: growing and changing, uplifting and entertaining our audiences, and providing an opportunity for anyone who wants to sing and share our love of the choral art form.

Capital Singers of Trenton is Alive and Well, performing in Trenton.

Richard M. Loatman, Founding Artistic Director and Principal Conductor

“I would like to make a contribution to Trenton, a wonderful city, nothing like the stereotypical grubby image associated with this historic city. A chamber chorus would

serve the city in both formal (patriotic songs for offi cial occasions) and informal ones with jazz, pop, and classical concerts.”

I related that statement to the staff writer of the Princeton Packet back in 1985. Since then I had been involved with high school and college choirs, church and community

choruses, and professional and community theater groups, as well as private teaching. I even conducted quite a wonderful third grade chorus at Eldridge Park School in Lawrenceville, NJ. I continued the choral journey with the Lawrence Chorale and

the Greater West Windsor Schola Cantorum, but had no idea how to begin an ensemble in Trenton, no performing space, and no organization to back it up.

In 2006 the defi ning moment became a reality; many of my singing friends and I formed the Capital Singers of Trenton. At fi rst it was a whim. Th en the planets seem to align in our favor. We had a talented, balanced

group, a strong board of directors, non-profi t status and a performing space at St. James Catholic Church. We added members, grew and changed, fi nding ourselves with an appreciative audience and many invitations to perform. We had arrived!

I feel music in my heart.Every song I sing

I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on!

You’ve left an imprint, you’ve left an imprint

on my heart.

You have taught me how to love,

you have taught me how live

Community Singers began as a

In addition to being assistant conductor of Capital Singers of Trenton (CST), I am also a charter

member, and Richard and I go back over 30 years now. I remember my fi rst phone call from him about the group; after we exchanged our “hello- how- are- you”

he said “I am starting a new group and calling it Capital Singers of Trenton”. Right then, I knew he was headed toward something important, and I was ready to be part of it.

CST has gone through many changes over the years, and with those changes we have shared, and still share, very

challenging and exciting times. We work with a wonderful

conductor, fabulous accompanists, beautiful orchestras, spectacular guest soloists and guest artists. We sing in large auditoriums, beautiful sacred and historic buildings, and last year, released our fi rst CD. Our repertoire varies tremendously, from simple folk songs to elaborate choral works. We off er something for everyone, and that brings us the most wonderful audiences; audiences that are full of life, excited to be with us, and appreciative of our musical off erings.

Working with CST for these 10 years has allowed me to grow musically, and given me many memories created from

beautiful moments. But the most precious moments have come in performance, when the room quiets, and the conductor raises his hands, and there is that fi rst unison breath when we connect… inspire…perform.

The year 2014 marked the 350th anniversary of New

Jersey. As a way of celebrating and also showcasing our State Capital, we produced our fi rst CD titled Legacy 2014: A Year with Capital Singers of Trenton and Trenton Community Singers. Founding artistic director and conductor, Richard M. Loatman, carefully chose four of Trenton’s best known buildings and chose appropriate music to be recorded in each.

Sacred Heart Church, which coincidentally was also

celebrating its 200th year, was chosen for the Christmas portion of the CD. Trinity Episcopal Cathedral on West State Street was chosen for Songs of Faith and Unity. Th e Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie in Cadwalader Park

was used to record Lighter Fare and fi nally the William Trent House, built by the founder of Trenton and home of the fi rst Governor of NJ, was used to record Songs of the American Revolution. Overall, it was a challenging recording project, lasting almost a year and wrought with complications such as placement of singers, equipment and the variable acoustics for each venue.

“We picked four areas of Trenton to record in to

highlight Trenton and its history and its art and music,” Loatman says. “We dedicate this recording to the entire Trenton Community, showcasing views from the past, creating excitement in our present and fostering genuine partnerships for our future!”

We never thought ten years ago that this experience

would be so rewarding and enjoyable. Th e sound that we are able to create with the amazing leadership of

Richard and Ellen is beyond comprehension. Th e choir

has given us the opportunity to sing and be a part of something special and

magical! n Alex P. & Michael Y.

I was fortunate to be introduced to Capital Singers of Trenton’s board of trustees about six years ago, which, along with my minority status as a non-singer, makes me a relative

newcomer as well as an outsider.

As a newcomer, I did not feel the group’s growing pains, nor did I experience its hungry years. I joined Capital Singers of Trenton (CST) at a stage in its development when

audiences were beginning to recognize and take note of CST’s presence, performances, and focus on the city. Board meetings included some discussion about the group’s upcoming fi fth anniversary. Th is was a remarkable occasion, for the simple reason that the original group was formed for only one special performance, and had never planned to exist beyond that! Naturally, the fact that CST was approaching its fi fth anniversary was met by astonishment and glee, and a new sense of resolve. CST had found a niche, but more importantly, it had stolen the hearts and touched the souls of its members. So much so, that in the years since that fi fth anniversary there was always tacit understanding and never any question that there would not be a tenth anniversary!

Also in retrospect, while I may have thought of myself as an outsider, I was not. Th at misperception was rooted in the fact that I was one of two non-singing members at the time, the other, a dedicated person who had been

- and still is - part of the group since its inception. Never was I treated as someone who did not belong. My ideas and suggestions were and still are welcomed and embraced. Proof of that is the great pride and honor I take in having been entrusted with the leadership of this fi ne organization, and the friendships I have made with my fellow members. Nor has being a non-singing member ever dulled my enthusiasm or penchant for perfection. In the same vein that our chorus members and artistic director are passionate about the content, quality and musicality of the artistic performance, my passion is about the effi cacy of a diff erent kind of performance. It has to do with what goes on “off the risers” - a term I aff ectionately coined that represents the business and organizational functions that help make the performances and performers “on the risers” possible. My passion, along with that of the other members of the board, is to ensure that our organizational plans, actions and decisions are always supporting our chorus members and moving our organization forward.

And that brings me to my point: While there are countless organizations that have persevered artistically and fi nancially beyond their tenth anniversary, I do not know of any that have the one special and admirable

characteristic that sets CST apart. It is a trait that has underscored its growth and endurance, and a quality that I admire, respect and envy more than talent, passion and dedication. It is called spirituality.

Being a spiritual organization is not about organized religion, or God or theology. Nor does it have anything to do with performing beautiful hymns or sacred songs. CST is a spiritual organization because its members have an

inner life that nourishes and is nourished by meaningful work in the context of community. It is a place where people fi nd joy, meaning and purpose, and are able to connect with other human beings as part of a community. Its members show kindness, respect, trust and open-mindedness toward others, in a culture where profi ts or competition are not the primary values of the organization. Spiritual organizations are powerful instruments in society. I believe that by being one, CST adds to an individual’s fulfi llment, while providing the greater community with hope and vitality.

That, in an indirect manner, is my testimonial to Richard M. Loatman and Capital Singers of Trenton. It is my way of saying thanks to them for helping to give people a sense of purpose and for making our community a better

place.

Please join me - on or off the risers - in celebrating and supporting Capital Singers of Trenton’s next ten years. Long live their spirituality!

Richard M. Loatman, ex offi cio

The history of how Capital Singers came to be is pretty straightforward – almost all of the early members sang together off and on since their teen years, we knew one

another from community theater, church choirs, high school musicals, ad hoc choruses…with the common connection of Richard Loatman’s conducting, directing and vision. When he called and asked if I’d be a “ringer” (walk in) for a group or event he was

conducting – it was impossible to say no as the challenge of learning a new piece or performing a work learned decades before and blending voices with old and new friends is one of the greatest joys of my life. I felt such a sense of excitement, satisfaction and privilege, being part of those moments – being asked to help found Capital Singers of Trenton was a no-brainer.

Singing regularly with gifted vocalists under Richard’s direction, fulfi lling a lifelong dream of establishing a Trenton based chorus and giving back to the community all rolled into one package, what a fantastic

opportunity. My memories trip over hours spent around my dining room table hammering out our by-laws, pestering Doug Worthington, baritone, attorney and the poor guy who provided the professional talent to fi le the necessary paperwork of our corporate charter and the charitable 501(c)(3) designation from the Internal Revenue Service, seeking out performance venues, holding marathon meetings and Odyssey-length rehearsals, fainting spells, falling risers, gut-wrenching anxiety during performances where we were learning the music as we processed onto the stage. In the early days we never knew if we would make it to the next performance or the next season. But our belief in our message, our conductor, our friends and our love of producing an extraordinary sound with a unique mission compelled us forward.

The expansion of our chorus to include the talent of the Trenton Community Singers inspired the charter members to reach out further, expand our vision. Our sound matured, our audience grew, the venues

multiplied and our sense of purpose resolved. We sang in churches, basements, auditoriums, along the Delaware, perched on stairs, sweltering in 100 degree heat at the Trent House, freezing with cold on the steps of the State House on State Street, for school children, veterans, music lovers, in fi ts of hilarity or with tears running down our faces – all just for the joy of blending voices. My favorite moments were when we invited members of the audience to come up “front” and join the chorus for a beloved number and never left our ranks.

Now the names of CST members who shared these precious moments and are warming up heavenly choir - Stan, Nancy, Chet and Vince run through my mind. Here we are - a true family built over a decade of

rehearsals, dinners, board meetings, travel, performances, recording sessions, laughter and tears - celebrating, with you, our wonderful supporters, our loyal friends, ten years of the gift of music. With all of my heart, dear Capital Singers of Trenton, Board members – past and present, gifted accompanists, soloists, guest artists, arrangers and conductors – for allowing me to be a part of this treasured ten-year experiment. – Cent’ anni!

Since love is lord of heav’n and earthHow can I keep from singing?

Th ru’ all the tumult and the strife,I hear the music ringing!

It sounds and echoes in my soulHow can I keep from singing?
