JJames Allen is a member of the National Honor

Society, president of the CF chorus and CF honor society. He is captain of both the cross country and track and field teams. He received the New York State 2012 Scholarship for Academic Excellence,US Army Reserve National Scholar/Athlete Award, Chenango Forks Salutatorian Medal, Chenango Forks Administration Award Scholarship, Chenango Forks Scholarship Foundation Scholarship, Robert Cushing Memorial Award, and the Charles Sabine Memorial Award. He plans to attend Georgetown University and major in biochemistry.

EEmily Feldpausch is a member of the National Honor Society,

captain of the varsity lacrosse team, member of the varsity soccer team and a two-time academic all-star. She is treasurer of Odyssey of the Mind team, secretary of Student Executive Council, math department peer tutor, president of SADD, member of the yearbook and history clubs, treasurer of CIA, and volunteers in the school and community. She received the New York State 2012 Scholarship for Academic Excellence, National Merit Scholarship Commended, CF Valedictorian Medal, CF Scholarship Foundation Scholarship, CF Administration Award Scholarship, Hillcrest Rotary Scholarship, Ed Warner Memorial Scholarship, RYLA Award, Elmira College Valedictorian Scholarship and the Sgt. Lawrence D. Peters Scholarship. She will attend Elmira College, majoring in biology and chemistry.

Encouraging reading at an early age is an important part of education. At CFE, students can participate in the Accelerated

Reader program. This is an easy to use computer-based tool that inspires students to read more and better books. Each book has a point value and students track their points.

This year, students who received the most points in each grade are Dawson Palmer, Dante Hovancik and Julie Heaney. Dawson had the most overall points. Congratulation to all three students for setting a wonderful example on the importance of reading.

Ariel Roys is a member of the National Honor Society, Odyssey

of the Mind, student council, yearbook club, Weather Watch, CIA, drama club, Science Olympiad, and the NASA Lunar Research team. She played soccer and ran indoor and outdoor track. She is on the highest honor roll, was all-division and an academic all-star.

She received the Student Council Leadership Scholarship, Chenango Forks Scholarship Foundation Scholarship, Chris Reardon Memorial Scholarship, Kattelville Athletic Association Scholarship and the SUNY ESF Presidential Scholarship. She will attend BCC in the fall and then SUNY ESF to major in environmental resources engineering. TTaylor Powers is a member of

Science Olympiad, the NASA Lunar Research team, CF Scholarship Foundation, Binghamton Youth Symphony Orchestra, all-county band, the school pit band and girls tennis. She is a two-time scholar athlete and academic all-star. She received a Chenango Forks Scholarship Foundation Scholarship,

Chenango Forks Band Boosters Scholarship, Joseph P. Mangan Post 1194 American Legion Personal Effort Award, and the US Marine Semper Fidellis Award for Music Excellence. In the fall, she will attend SUNY Geneseo, majoring in biology.

SStephanie Zdimal is a member of the National Honor Society,

serving as CF secretary. She is a member of the Chenango Forks Scholarship Foundation, vocal ensemble, Chenango Forks PTA, and Southeastern Region PTA youth member. She was secretary of the senior class. During her high school

years, Stephanie received dozens of awards and prizes for her artistic creativity, including being the national winner of the Heinz Ketchup bottle label design contest and this year’s CF art student of the year. She received a CF Scholarship Foundation Scholarship, Keystone College Academic Scholarship, Chenango Forks PTA Scholarship, Portfolio Squad Art Award, NYSASBO Outstanding Workplace Contribution Scholarship, and Chenango Forks After-Prom Party Scholarship. She will attend Keystone College where she will major in the visual arts.

Andrew Collyer is a member of the National Honor Society. He

played football for six years and was a co-captain. He ran track and field, and is a member of CIA, Science Olympiad, NASA Lunar Research team, band and jazz band, Weather Watch, CF Scholarship Foundation, Boy Scout Troop #152, was junior class

president and is active in his church youth group. He is a four-year graduate from Seminary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He received the New York State Academic Excellence Award, Joseph P. Mangan Post 1194 American Legion Humanitarian Award, Hillcrest Rotary Scholarship, Frank G. Paul Medal of Excellence in Math & Science, Chenango Forks Scholarship Foundation Scholarship, Broome Community College Presidential Scholarship, Broome Community College Alumni Association Incoming Freshman Scholarship, US Air Force Scholar/Athlete Award, Broome County Republican Women’s Club June B. Harding Scholarship, Chenango Forks Band Boosters Scholarship and Chenango Forks After-Prom Party Scholarship. In the fall, he will attend BCC, majoring in liberal arts and then will transfer to BYU for pre-medicine and go on to medical school.

NNick Shannon is a member of the National Honor Society, the

cross country team, Odyssey of the Mind, drama club, Science Olympiad, Envirothon, Weather Watch, the CF Scholarship Foundation and the Boy Scouts, where he earned his Eagle Scout Badge. He received the Senator Thomas W. Libous Community Service

Award, SUNY ESF Presidential Scholarship, Chenango Forks Scholarship Foundation Scholarship, Port Crane Civic Association Scholarship and the Air Force Math & Science Award. He will attend SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and major in landscape architecture.

ZZach Jeske is a member of the National Honor Society, the

football and lacrosse teams, ski club and executive student council. He received the Clarkson Merit Scholarship, S t u d e n t C o u n c i l L e a d e r s h i p Scholarship, Daughters of the American Revolution Bronze American History Award, Chenango Forks Scholarship

Foundation Scholarship and the Kattelville Athletic Association Scholarship. In the fall, he will attend Clarkson University, majoring in aeronautical engineering.

MMariya Pecheny is a member of the National Honor Society,

the soccer and track and field teams, and chorus. She received the Saint Bonaventure Athletic Scholarship, Saint Bonaventure Friar Scholarship, Joseph P. Mangan Post 1194 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Award, Joseph P. Mangan Post 1194 American Legion

Citizenship Award and the US Army Reserve national Scholar/Athlete Award. She will attend Saint Bonaventure University in the fall and major in biology.

Taking a try at a track meet

Students in grades 3-5 participated in the first CFE Track Meet, held in June. Third-grade teacher Christina Germano coordinated the event as a way for these young

students to learn about various track and field events such as the high jump, long jump, and a number of races. Not only did it teach them about physical fitness, but it’s hoped some of these budding athletes will continue in the sport as they get into high school.

On Saturday, May 19, just after midnight , more than 200 Chenango Forks juniors, seniors

and their guests attended the “Roaring 20’s” After-Prom Party (APP) at the high school. The party was the culmination of months of planning and fundraising by the APP committee, which is comprised mainly of parent volunteers of the junior and senior students.

The cafeteria and halls were covered with black, red and white decorations, including city skylines, freestanding gangster cutouts, twinkling lights, fedora hats, boas and beads. The students were treated to delicious refreshments and a special candy bar. Entertainment included air brush tattooing by California Sun-Daze; an inflatable bungee run and boot camp course, music by DJ Rick Fry; Minute-To-Win-It games and prizes, a photo booth from Save the Date Events, a slide show featuring the juniors and seniors through the years and hypnotist Rich Wilson. Prizes included over 100 Chinese Auction prizes, a t-shirt toss and over $7,000 worth of large prizes in the form of cash and gifts such as i-Pads, T.V.s, refrigerators, GPS systems, cameras and more.

Each year, the APP provides a safe and fun environment for the students to continue their prom experience. In addition, the APP Committee will once again award a pair of $250 scholarships to graduating seniors who best exhibited their efforts to make healthy life choices based on their application submissions.

Many thanks to those who made this year’s party a great success: the tireless committee volunteers, the Chenango Forks administration, staff and teachers, the CF Sophomore Class, Deb Daniels’ foods classes and our very generous community.

Young poets featured at recitation

On May 23, 30 Chenango Forks elementary and middle school students participated in the 35th

Annual Poetry and the Children Day at Binghamton University. The day included inspiration from a key note speaker who shared her journey as a writer and inspired the young poets to keep writing. Audiences then enjoyed students reciting their original poems, which were featured in an anthology given to each of them that day. You can look for a copy of this anthology in each school’s library.

The Da Vinci Art Show was held at the Broome County Library in May and showcased the area’s best student artwork in the grades k-12. The event included the participation of nearly 60 art teachers from schools in Broome, Chenango, Tioga and Otsego counties.

Chemistry teacher receives award

The Binghamton Section of the American Chemical Society awarded eighth-grade science teacher Alison Sheridan-

Brennan the ACS Outstanding Educator Award. She received her award at a banquet held in May at Binghamton University.

The award recognizes outstanding contributions of college and K-12 teachers to the education of

young people in chemistry in the Binghamton local section geographical area. The award consists of a special plaque and

is given annually based on the nomination of a deserving applicant.

Students invent to win

Thomas Wachter, Declan Houlihan and Elizabeth Hendrickson put their invention ideas to work at this year’s

annual Invention Convention held at CV State Park in May. Thomas and Declan each won “Best Prototype” medals. Elizabeth won first place in the “Best Invention” category and qualified as a regional semifinalist. Twenty-five students will be chosen as finalists.

Thomas’ invention is ‘LapKin’, Declan’s is ‘CamPod’, and Elizabeth’s invention is ‘Sticky Fingers.’

NYS Invention Convention is a statewide invention education program for public and private school students. The goal is to stimulate the development of students’ creativity and imaginations, thereby building a new generation of American inventors. Regional competitions are held in the Capital District, Binghamton, Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo areas.

State award given to CF senior

This year, a member of the CF staff

had the honor of choosing a student for a scholarship.

That’s because. Dawn Phoenix, district clerk and business office secretary, was the recipient of the 2011 New York State Association of School Business Officials (NYSASBO) Outstanding Workplace Contribution Award. As part of that award, Phoenix has the distinction of choosing the $750 NYSASBO- sponsored annual scholarship given to a deserving high school senior. Phoenix chose Stephanie Zdimal.

Student applicants were required to submit a resume, letter of recommendation from faculty, transcript and an essay discussing a leadership opportunity or challenge they took on and how the experience shaped them, and how their education contributed to who they are today.

On June 4, Phoenix, Stephanie, and her parents attended the NYSASBO’s Annual Awards and Scholarships Luncheon held at the Hilton Hotel in Saratoga Springs, where Stephanie was recognized as being the recipient of the NYSASBO Outstanding Workplace Contribution Scholarship.

The award is designed to recognize a member of a school district’s business or human resource office who has made his or her district a better place to work through improved business office operations, human resource operations, and/or benefits. The scholarship is sponsored by the The Segal Company – Actuarial/Health Benefit Consultants - an exhibitor of the NYSASBO’ 64th Annual Meeting and Exhibits held June 3-6, 2012.

Senior Nicholas Shannon is the recipient of the Student Community Service Award sponsored by Senator Tom Libous, Broome Tioga BOCES and WBNG TV. Nick received his award at a ceremony on April 26.

This $1,000 award is given to one senior from each high school in the Senator’s 52nd District.

Nick is very active in his school and in the community. He is a member of the Boy Scouts and recently earned his Eagle Scout by designing and building taxidermy pedestals for The Roberson Museum. He is a member of the National Honor Society where he is a peer tutor, and volunteers in various school activities and events such as the PTA Fall Festival.

As a member of the CF Scholarship Foundation, he volunteers at the annual pancake breakfast and phone-a-thon. He is also a member of the Weather Watch team.

Outside of school, Nick volunteers for Lost Pawz, a local animal shelter, and

the BC Humane Society.

Nick believes it is important to be involved in the community, saying

“When I volunteer, I feel good about helping someone else in my life. It gives me purpose. Volunteering strengthens our community, which is beneficial to all of its citizens.”

Senior Stephanie Zdimal wins essay contest

Senior Stephanie Zdimal was selected as one of 10 winners in the 2012 Fine Arts Society of the Southern Tier (FAAST) Essay Contest. Her essay was written on

how she connects art with her life.

The Fine Arts Society of the Southern Tier has been promoting the arts throughout the Southern Tier of New York for more than 100 years. Its mission is to encourage interest and participation in the arts by the community at large and encourage the growth and development of local artists. For the past several years, FAAST has been hosting a Young At Art juried show for local high school students with great success.

Janice L. Wood, president and FASST Board of Directors, said, “With all the news coverage on school academics this year, the FASST Board decided to offer the art essay contest to allow the art students an opportunity to express themselves

in words versus a canvass. The review panel was very pleased with the entries. The students had no trouble relating the importance of art in their lives. Stephanie was no exception. Her essay clearly identified her love, passion and need for art in her future.”

Alberto Brown is a 2003 CF graduate. After graduating from CF, he received an associate’s degree in industrial technology from Broome Community College and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering technologies with concentration in sustainable energies and

mathematics from SUNY Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome.

He is currently employed by Ritter Group USA as a solar thermal mechanical engineer and project and product engineer. Brown designs solar hot water systems for various industries, which includes large scale heating networks, large scale commercial building heating, city-wide district heating systems, domestic hot water/home heating systems and commercial pool heating systems. He travels to potential job sites, maps out all existing hydraulic systems and records data. He then takes the data and designs a solar hot water system that will meet 100 percent of the projects demand in the summer months, when there is the highest amount of solar energy. He uses the data collected to generate piping diagrams, calculate equipment specifications, and to create drawings and schematics for locations of new equipment using various pieces of software to generate 3D renderings of each system, which can then be viewed on Google Earth. He also provides engineering and technical support during and after the installation process.

While in college, Brown received the Resident Adviser (RA) of the Year 2008-09, RA of the month in 2009 and was president of Hall Counsel for three semesters.

Brown said of his high school years, “CF helped show me what subjects mattered to me. My teachers helped me find the things I loved doing and pushed me to continue doing them. I followed my passion and years later I have a job that I love and enjoy going to everyday. Try to keep in mind that what you learn at CF will be a foundation for many other things to come in the future.”

Erica Miner, Class of 2005

Erica Miner graduated from CF in 2005. She recently completed her undergraduate studies at SUNY Stonybrook with a degree in geology and history. While in college, Miner learned about groups that go to other countries to help residents with housing, water and other issues

that need addressing.

Her first experience was with Global Brigades. Its mission is to empower communities to access sufficient clean water through infrastructural development, water treatment, community leader training, and education. This past January, she traveled to Honduras to help build water pipelines. Then, in April, she joined Friends of New England and went to Nicaragua, where they helped build houses.

Miner said she initially wasn’t sure about going on such trips but added, “I just knew that I wanted to travel and since I was majoring in geology, it seemed like a great opportunity to put that to use. Once on the trip, I realized that I wanted to continue to do more trips like this.”

Recently, Miner and two other fellow college students visited students in Susan Byrnes’ Spanish IV and Roy Dando’s Real World Math classes to give a presentation on their recent travels to Honduras and Nicaragua. They talked about the cultures, what kind of work they did, safety, health and showed dozens of photographs.

Miner’s advice to CF graduates: “Get involved! As much as you possibly can. Travel. Travel. Travel. I also went to Oxford University for a summer session to study. I never knew these things were possible because I never looked into it. Make as many connections as you can. Also, it’s okay to not know what you want to do. Try anything that comes your way.”

Miner plans to return to Nicaragua for a couple of months at the beginning of next year. After Nicaragua, she plans to go to graduate school for public health at either Boston University or University College London.
