Gimav is ready to go back to China: 1,200 sq.m of exhibition space in the Italian Pavilion with 30 or so companies representing Made in Italy glass in the Land of the Dragon. The keystone that representatives from the flat and hollow glass sectors have in common is the desire to be there, to establish a presence and build partnerships with local trade people that will enable our companies to grasp the latest opportunities in this rapidly evolving and growing market. The association’s trip to India was also a success. This country is growing more
slowly than China perhaps, but steadily. Glasspex, mainly for hollow glass, is also shaping up to be an important showcase for the launch of new projects confirming that the local market - increasingly more focused on quality control – is booming. Meanwhile, work in preparation for Vitrum 2013 continues. Online pre-registration has opened, but a special Facebook page has also been inaugurated to keep trade people and visitors up to date with real-time news about the October exhibition. Without overlooking the fact that the presentation of the international exhibition in Milan to the world press is just around the corner. This year’s presentation will be in the cradle of Italian art, culture and technology. The international press has been called to Venice, to get to know the craftsmanship of artisan glassmaking in Murano, and will then go to Maranello, the temple of the automotive industry par excellence, for a tour of the factory and Ferrari museum. All this makes for a two-day appointment in perfect, authentic “Italian style”.
In February, the glass industry paid its last respects to Annibale Besana, one of the founders of the Gimav Association and its president for many
years. A quiet and reserved man, honest and loyal, and of great moral upstanding, he made a major contribution to the growth of the Association,
working with a team spirit and striving for mutual interests. He ran his company - CMB Costruzioni Meccaniche Besana –
with the very same passion, taking its machinery and mark across the world, with the help of a small group of workers whom he considered part
of his family. He will never be forgotten by those fortunate enough to know him: a true gentleman has left us.

ce in Beijing from May 24 to 27, 2013. “The participation of Italian companies - continues the Vice President of Gimav - is an additional testament to the determi-nation to bring the value boasted by made-in-Italy production on the Far Ea-stern market in general, and, more parti-cularly on the Chinese marketplace whe-re Italian brands are already firmly positioned. Moreover, all Italian busines-ses are extremely keen to cater to the lo-cal production needs, both expressed and those not yet expressed and still un-met, in order to satisfy them with pre-mium quality, flexible and innovative pro-ducts.” Glass is a material that is finding an increasing number of applications in a variety of different sectors, from the con-struction industry to infrastructures and the food sector, all segments that are de-termined to upgrade the quality of their containers and make them more recycla-ble and thus environmental friendly. “For all of these areas, Italian manufacturers of machinery, accessories and special products for glass processing have de-veloped cutting edge and continuously updated solutions”, continues Mr. Fac-cenda who also emphasized that despite the persistent crisis affecting several countries, there are some areas, inclu-ding Asia, whose economy is thriving. “Italian businessmen must therefore have a footing in these healthy markets - says Mr. Faccenda, because they represent a great opportunity.” In fact, several Italian companies have already successfully penetrated the Chinese market “as a re-sult of their desire to be closer, also in terms of manufacturing sites, to the mar-ket outlet and thus be well placed to sen-se the trends and directions, and to pro-actively and promptly meet them,” concludes Mr. Faccenda.
Visitors to Vitrum 2013 will be able to register online as of May. This is a simple and time-sa-ving procedure to visit one of the leading glass industry exhibitions and not to miss out on in-valuable business opportunities and meetings with the movers and shakers of the international glass community. The registration form will be available on the www.vitrum-milano.it website and will provide free access to the 17th biennial international trade show of machinery, equip-ment and systems for processing flat and hollow glass, and finished products for the glass indust-ry, scheduled to take place at Fiera Milano (Rho-Pero) from October 23rd through 26th, 2013. Af-ter completing the registration form, visitors will receive a confirmation e-mail with a bar code to gain access to the exhibition grounds. And for those wishing to spend a pleasant stay in Italy on the occasion of Vitrum 2013, the website visitor section contains interesting hints and tips for the best hotels, restaurants and trips provided by the Ventana Group travel agency that has partnered with the Vitrum organization to offer special rates to all Vitrum visitors.

2013 got off to a very good start for the hollow glass industry, as confirmed by Paolo Panza, tableware division manager at Olivotto, the company that has
been manufacturing machinery for table-ware, pharmaceutical and technical glass since 1946. “Despite the general situa-tion, it is clear that the typically most acti-ve areas such as the Far and Middle East, are eager to make new investments,” says Paolo Panza. “The attention is most-ly focused on new plants although many clients are investing to retrofit the techno-logy to existing plants. If the Far East and China are increasingly focusing on higher quality products than before, such as stemware, which until recently was the

exclusive domain of Western Europe, the Middle East continues to focus on the purchase of machinery to increase the productivity of consumer goods (tra-ditionally pressed drinking glasses and objects).” Particularly relevant in this ge-ographical area is the market for opal glass, where Olivotto’s last generation spinning machines are market leaders. The European market is still in the dol-drums: companies are reluctant to invest in new plants and prefer to upgrade exi-sting machinery with a view to increasing production quality and efficiency. Olivot-to’s strength is certainly its reputation as a company that offers complete and fully equipped machinery lines and a range of innovative solutions that stand out for unprecedented efficiency, reliability and performance. This also applies to stem-ware forming machinery, a high quality, typically European product that is taking hold also in countries traditionally less
interested in premium quality, added-value products,” adds Paolo Panza. “ Olivotto supplies turnkey plants, machi-nery for the entire production line and technical assistance to meet the needs of a wide variety of clients and this has made a major contribution to both the sales and the reputation of the company that is recognized as a trustworthy and professional partner worldwide.” After participating in Glasspex -- the Indian glass exhibition -- Olivotto will also take part in ChinaGlass, the Beijing-based in-dustry event where, according to Paolo Panza: “We hope to meet all those inve-stors drawn to a show that has become the world’s second most important after Glasstec. Despite China’s slowdown over the last few years, this country re-mains an interesting market because it can attract the interest of investors from China as well as from the entire Asian and Middle East area.”

AN INTERNATIONAL SETTING to strengthen partnerships and build new contactsChina Glass 2013 on stage in Beijing from 24 to 27 May. Nicola Lattuada and Barbara Antonini talk about the opportunities for flat and hollow glass from Italy
T he appointment with one the of three largest trade fairs for the entire glass industry returns this year: the 24th China Glass is
slated for 24-27 May at the new Chi-na International Exhibition Center in Beijing. It is organized by the Chinese Ceramic Society (CCS), a non-profit or-ganization that supports those dealing with the science and technology of non-metal inorganic materials. The exhibi-tion is an international setting that sati-sfies the needs of exhibitors and visitors from China and other countries, a forum for developing important business op-
portunities and displaying new machi-nery, components and spare parts, as well as avant-garde solar technologies, photovoltaic glass, panels, sealants, new measuring methods and testing systems. “It is important to be at Chi-na Glass, to strengthen existing busi-ness relations and build new contacts in the local market, but above all in South East Asia, since the showcase attracts numerous visitors from this vast area”, explained Nicola Lattuada from Adelio Lattuada Srl, representing Gimav’s Flat Glass Group. “As for our expectations and results – he continued – let’s say

that the real interest of local visitors has never been fully satisfactory in the past, but this was because of the huge presence of local builders. The interest shown by overseas visitors has always been good instead”. The Chinese exhi-bition has now become strategically im-portant for the entire Asian area, as well as for all the surrounding countries and its target is practically worldwide. “Our main interest – Lattuada confirmed – is to use this event to meet many of our international agents and customers and build contacts with some major Chine-se customers who export and therefore focus on quality production and on qua-lity machinery as a result”. “Potentially the Chinese market is quite receptive but – he pointed out - the ‘glass cultu-re’ in China is not the same as in the European or North American markets and this is putting a brake on exports
of this kind of European machinery to the country. Many Gimav member com-panies are present in a big way in the Chinese market with their products and have production facilities there: a great deal depends on the kind of products that is manufactured. There are defini-tely still margins for growth in the future especially for consumer products, lea-ding-edge machinery and equipment”. And what can Italian companies do when they cannot compete on price? “The strengths of a European produ-cer versus his Chinese competitors are certainly high quality production, quality control in product cycles, product de-velopment and growth, after-sales ser-vices, the duration of machinery and the fact that it can be used for much lon-ger, even 24 hours a day. This is whe-re ideas are born, not copied”, Nicola Lattuada concluded. “Over the past 15

years taking part in China Glass, which along with Glasstec and Mir Stekla has become one of the must-attend events for the glass industry, has been strate-gic for a variety of reasons, especially for us because we work in the hollow glass sector”, said Barbara Antonini, who runs the family business and sits on the board of the Gimav Hollow Glass group. “Visitors at China Glass are no longer just from China, they are inve-stors from all of South East Asia, India, Russia and the Arab countries, and are
willing to travel long distances to an exhibition that has such a broad reach and that brings together the large-scale suppliers and small companies that are expanding on the market. Being there is important – she added – not just to build new business contacts and strengthen relations with existing customers, but to carefully observe the growing numbers of competitors and local producers, the quality of whose production is im-proving significantly”. “2013 got off to a good start for us: we are working on new projects and know that we can bu-ild up our business in South-East Asia, which is also why it is necessary to be
at this important Chinese exhibition”, Barbara Antonini concluded. The or-ganizers of China Glass hope to repeat the success of the 2012 session, which attracted over 20,600 visitors from 96 countries, among which China, but also East Asia, the United States, Russia, Europe, India, Turkey and Iran. The 850 exhibitors (249 from other countries) oc-cupied a 80,500 sq.m exhibition space for four days, making it the biggest exhi-bition ever staged by China Glass since 1986, the year of its inception.

HEADING for quality China is set to become the world’s leading economy by 2016. The country is intent on making its economy “healthier” in many respects
According to the latest OECD data, China will be the world’s leading eco-nomy by 2016 (it is cur-rently the world’s second
leading economy), with an 8.3% grow-th this year and further expansion in 2014.Over the next two years, the Land of the Dragon will continue to grow at an average rate of 8% -- with 8 being a
“sacred” number in China - if the Gover-nment is able to maintain the current in-vestment rate and remain committed to its ironclad determination to reform its development model. Real estate, agri-culture, transportation, and energy are the industries that will attract the bulk of the investments. The lion’s share ho-wever will go to infrastructures, with a new 437.6 billion yuan government in-

vestment for 2013, 35 million more than last year. The fact that China still suffers from infrastructural backwardness (as is usually the case with economies at similar stages of development) is spur-ring intensive investments in this area and the level of investment in the pri-vate sector is well-founded by the high rates of return, as emphasized by Ri-chard Herd, head of the OECD’s China desk. The European Union is China’s most important trading partner. The most highly developed Chinese pro-vinces, such as Guangdong, Zhejiang and Fujian are heavily dependent on exports, that account for 20% of their regional GDP. But the dwindling de-mand from Western partners has made
a dent in the economy which in 2012 posted its lowest growth rate (7.8%) since 1999. The Chinese Government’s growth target this year is 7.5%, a relati-vely modest growth even because Chi-na today is more committed to quality rather than quantity. And this will be a momentous watershed. China wants to slow down its expansion to transform the economy and make it “healthier” by solving a number of problems that are plaguing both the Government and the population, such as the inequality of in-come, inflation, local government debt, the banking system reform, environ-mental protection and the lack of mar-ket liberalization policies which slows down private entrepreneurship.

I.G. SEALANTS
IT’S DEFINITELY BETTER NOT TO SAVE ON CERTAIN THINGS.
IF A SEALANT COSTS MUCH LESS THAN THIOVER, ASK YOURSELF WHY.
When talking about polysulphide sealants for IG, the formulation and selection of the raw materials used are fundamental for the long-term performance of the entire system. This is mainly why you can always rely on Thiover, on its exceptional quality and performance features. Throughout Fenzi’s 70 years in business, non-stop R&D efforts have led to the most efficient production processes and leading-edge product technology. The raw materials that are used and the sources of supply have always been chosen with extremely strict and binding criteria. Furthermore Fenzi, by far the world’s biggest producer of polysulphide sealants, works with the largest economies of scale, starting from the raw materials. Examine the cost/performance ratio
very carefully: if a polysulphide sealant costs much less than Thiover, it can’t be the same thing.

“I n the Chinese market our targets are large companies that export and focus very much on quality production
and on quality machinery as a result”. This is how Nicola Lattuada explained the Asian target of the company which is ba-sed Carbonate (Como). Among the straight-line grinders, one of the leading models is the TLR 13 AV C, which is the most used by leading producers of lami-nated glass for the heavy building indust-ry in northern Europe and has a touch-screen panel to manage statistics, servicing and alarms; pneumatic infeed and outfeed for easy glass loading and unloading; oil system with end-of-line pressure switch to guarantee a perfect lu-brication system; torque limitor to allow conveyors to operate perfectly in line and offer a longer lifespan; gearmotors with inverter; user-friendly front adjustment of the back arrises; ultrasound glass detec-tion sensors, durability, precision and water- and dirt-proofness; brakes on the pistons of the arris polishing spindles. All
the Adelio Lattuada models have an excellent durability/cost ratio: “there are machines that are still
running after 20 plus years and – the young businessman pointed out
– with more than two million meters pro-cessed, when the average lifespan is nor-mally about 5/6 years if high production and quantity levels are to be maintained”. The range of beveling machines includes more than ten 7- to 14-wheel models. A standout machine is the Gamma 614, which comes both with an electronic sy-stem and PC. It is designed for glasswor-ks which, because of their production and the quality of pieces to be processed, need bevellers that can work at high spe-eds with the best possible quality levels. One of the interesting features and streng-ths of this model is that it was the first to be fitted with four felt pads, thus making it the best in terms of processing speed and quality.

Bottero’s participation in China Glass becomes increasingly more important with each year that passes, because this
show is a must-attend event with a glo-bal reach (and a special focus on the South-East market, Japan, India, Rus-sia, and China), and, above all, because Bottero’s business in China is growing considerably. In fact, Bottero is a world leader in the glass industry and has been providing solutions for flat glass, hollow
glass and engineering since 1957. The company has several manufacturing si-tes in China that effectively cater to the needs of a continuously developing mar-ket. The event taking place in Beijing at the end of May is an invaluable opportu-nity for Bottero to offer its new products and solutions featuring a high degree of automation, technological innovation and process integration to meet clients’ needs and to reaffirm its vast experience and reliability in the glass industry.

“C hina Glass is not a Chinese, but rather an international fair. It is a rendezvous with a
very broad reach, a global, not-to-be missed showcase.” These are the rea-sons why Bovone Diamond Tools has decided to participate in the exhibition scheduled to take place in Beijing from May 24 through 27. “Because of the difficult times we are going through, our expectations are realistic - remarks sa-les manager Patrizia Pastorino - howe-ver, our overriding goal is to clearly de-monstrate to our clients, distributors, and fair attendees that our company remains firmly committed to the Chine-se market through its traditional proac-tive approach and growing propensity for innovation.” The most striking example will be the innovation that Bo-vone Diamond Tools -- which manufac-tures the most technologically reliable and hard-wearing range of diamond to-ols for flat glass processing -- is going to display at China Glass. For the time being the company prefers to keep a tight lid on this new product but it is willing to disclose the other two areas where it truly stands out: metal and re-sinoid cup wheels (the company’s core
business) and the tools developed for work centers, such as routers, the la-test company’s brainchild. With a glo-bal export market and 90% of produc-tion intended for exports, Bovone Diamond Tools looks to China Glass “in order to confirm its proactiveness, ste-adfastness and firm foothold in the market. Moreover - states Ms. Pastori-no -we hope to be able to make new contacts with distributors and opera-tors who supply many single clients who do not directly place their order for tools with a tool manufacturer.” Bovone Diamond Tools supplies the original wheels for Elettromeccanica Bovone machinery.

E xhibiting at China Glass is critical for a company such as Forza G, which has
been offering a range of ma-chinery for water treatment and 100% recycling of pro-duction wastewater for the last 15 years. In fact, Chi-na “is a key market be-cause of the industrial de-velopment it is experiencing,” explains the company owner Ro-berto Smaniotto. The scarcity of drinking water makes us one of the indispensable suppliers of primary energy. We penetra-ted the Chinese market at the end of last year and we have already installed five systems processing 400 m³/hour which aroused considerable interest among the local glass businessmen and major indu-stry companies.” And considering that “China is the market with the fastest growing trend in the building and infra-structure area, we are intent on partnering with a local sales organization to increase our visibility and foster communications with prospective clients in this huge country,” adds Roberto Smaniotto. Forza G will be showcasing some video educa-tional materials at the show in order to il-
lustrate the operation of its systems (more than 400 in 36 diffe-rent countries), that use mechanical sy-
stems (and no chemi-cals) to treat water. Cen-trifuges, semi-automatic and fully automatic so-lutions process from 6 to
more than 400,000 m³/hour, producing water for grinders with su-
spended solids below 5 µ, the certified quality for glass edging and micro filtering systems for absolute micron removal effi-ciency. The processing solutions develo-ped by Forza G can be installed on stan-dalone grinders or networked and centralized for the management of all in-stalled machinery.

C hina Glass is “a growing exhibi-tion, an unmissable opportuni-ty to meet numerous Asian clients and local manufactu-
rers, a major showcase and forum that allows us to emphasize the qualitative and functional differences of our pro-ducts.” This is how Mr. Franco Angelotti, general sales manager of Intermac, de-scribes the importance of the Beijing event where the company will be presen-ting the Cnc Master 23 in an area devoted to the processing of glass for the house-hold appliance industry. As Mr. Franco Angelotti explains: “This is a reliable ma-chine specifically designed for high-spe-ed processing of thin glass. These featu-res make it an indispensable tool for the Asian market which manufactures a large share of household appliances sold worl-dwide.” The company will also display the Master 35 5-axis work center, a technologically state-of-the-art solution used in the furniture, construction and design indu-stries and that “in a traditionally less sophisticated market such as the Asian one, can meet the growing needs of quality production.” Also on di-splay will be the Genius 37 Ct cutting table, a high-performance machine that will set new standards in terms of accuracy, ease of use and relia-
bility. As r e m a r-ked by Mr. Franco Angelotti: “The demand for flexible and technologically advanced ma-chinery is an interesting area of the mar-ket that our company has traditionally re-sponded to and actively developed.” Despite the general sluggish climate, our company’s global operations, its wide range of products and its worldwide ac-claimed brand have made it possible to achieve extraordinary results. Our stra-tegy revolves around the continuous de-velopment of cutting edge solutions, massive investments in a pre- and after-sales network that provides continuous support to the client, and the ability to identify the changing market needs and develop ad hoc solutions that lend added value to our product.”

SEALING AND STRETCHING by Ocmi for high quality stemwareOCMI can be considered the supplier of the main stemware manufacturers
COMPANIESDOSSIER FOCUS ON CHINA GLASS
O CMI is the main supplier of stemware manufacturers thanks to its automatic sea-ling/stretching machine SA
available with 42, 48 or 60 stations. This machine is equipped with three transfer devices for stems and bowls loading and finished products unloa-ding. These devices move in perfect synchronization with the main machine. This model by OCMI can work with bowls from blow-blow or press-blow machines. The grippers can be adap-ted for internal or external gripping of the bowl as a function of the regularity of moil shape. A vacuum system can be used if required by the type of stem and bowl. OCMI is very flexible regar-ding chucks supply: the new floating chucks allow to compensate imperfec-tions in bowls flatness and obtain a perfectly straight sealed article. Once the bowls and stems are gripped by lo-wer and upper chucks they start the cycle in the machine. The operations are carried out with adjustable burners placed on holding ring moving around the machine. The articles first pass through the heating station where they reach the right temperature for the sea-ling. In the sealing zone the lower chucks lift up and approach the upper chucks until the two items get imbued and sealed. After that, if necessary, the
product can be stretched through the down motion of lower chucks. Stretching can reach a max. height of 150 mm. The maximum height of the finished stemware is 350 mm. The spe-ed of the machine depends on the mo-del (SA60 max. mechanical speed is 80 pcs/min.), on the type of article and on the type of glass. In order to improve the quality and uniformity of finished products, OCMI developed a camera control system that checks stem height and sends a signal to a mechanical de-vice adjusting the upper chuck position and keeping it within a + 2 tolerance from the 0 level. This control allows to get the same sealing point in all sec-tions. The control panel of vision sy-stem is very user-friendly even for unskilled operators.

A s one of the major machine producers today, China is certainly a complex market for Italy but can however be
successfully handled thanks to the high quality and advanced technology of Italian products. “The most recent sta-tistics - remarks Nancy Mammaro, ow-ner of Mappi International - are tangible proof that we are uniquely positioned to win over a large number of clients. What is important to understand is that China today is one of the world’s lea-ding markets and is a key gateway to other countries. This necessarily re-quires stepping up efforts to streng-then our business relationships.” At the China Glass exhibition, Mappi In-ternational will display Ats Eco Convection, the new horizon-tal glass tempering furnace, the culmination of the ad-vanced technology develo-ped by Mappi to achieve extraordinary production and qualitative results for a wide range of innovative solu-

C hina Glass grows edition by edition in terms of exhibitors and attendance, thus reaffirming its role as one
of the leading exhibitions and a major ren-dezvous for the global glass industry. “The ultimate goal of Officina Meccanica Schiatti Angelo at China Glass is to create visibility and exposure for made-in-Italy production - explains its co-owner, Ms. Cinzia Schiatti - and to directly meet glass professionals in order to strengthen sales relationships which are currently under-way as well as to engender loyalty among clients. The trend for buying cheap ma-chinery and sacrificing quality - she conti-nues - is waning, and Chinese busines-smen are looking for reliable and durable products, which are traditionally supplied by European, and above all Italian manu-facturers.” For the Chinese market and also for other countries requiring serial
production, Schiatti offers complete hori-zontal grinding lines comprising two dou-ble edgers for flat edge - BFP series - and for pencil edge - BFT models - and one or more connecting tables that can be cou-pled with glass sheets loaders or unloa-ders and that can be completed with trai-ning centers or corner grinding machines. The broad array of products includes dif-ferent models for processing glass sheets with thickness ranging between 2 and 20mm and measuring between 80 and in excess of 4500 mm. The machines can be optionally equipped with a dubbing device to chamfer the glass sheet cor-ners, even at high speeds, and a bar code reader consisting of a bar code reading frame and a gun/reader. The new techni-cal documentation will be available for consulting at the exhibition stand, cove-ring both the traditional products as well as the newly launched innovations: an ar-risser and vertical drill/router. Ms. Schiatti and her local representatives will be on hand to provide technical and commer-cial details.

T he 24th edition of China Glass is shaping up as a significant event to penetrate the Eastern market which has traditionally
shown a keen interest for made-in-Italy production. This is the fourth time that Triulzi participates in the show taking pla-ce at the China International Exhibition Center in Beijing, May 24 to 27. “A trip that is always worth it -- says Roberta Triulzi, export manager of the company located near Milan -- although visitor tur-nout slightly decreased at the last event in Shanghai. One of the reasons may be the attendance of more professional visitors with a keener interest in the industry pro-ducts.” China Glass is the right venue to take stock of the situation and to identify
the prevailing trends in most of the Ea-stern markets. The show has become established as a must-attend event for companies interested not only in China but also in nearby areas, such as India, Australia, the Middle East, Thailand, Ma-laysia, Korea, and Japan. “This is a very interesting market for our company – continues Mariella -- primarily as regards special machinery ensuring top perfor-mance and excellent results, definitely not standard machinery. We will have a representative booth at the show but no machinery on display. We already enjoy a good reputation with several architectu-ral, automotive and solar energy compa-nies and this is by far the best advertising for our quality.”

Machinery, Equipment and Systems for Flat and Hollow Glass, Glass and Fini-shed Products for Industry on stage in Milan on 23-26 October is now online to provide the trade with regular upda-tes on the show. “The Facebook page will offer added value to the exhibition – Vitrum Director Renata Gaffo confir-
med – a tool for sharing important in-formation with its exhibitors and visi-tors; over the coming months there will be updates on the exhibitors and the many new offerings in the exhibition’s theme areas, news about the traditional special events that Vitrum has been or-ganizing ever since it started with a view to disseminating awareness of this precious material, as well as the most interesting news from our indust-ry.” And, as per tradition, everything is
ready for the event reserved for the in-ternational press. On May 8th and 9th, the management of Vitrum and Gimav will take the leading representatives of the European trade press on a special tour focusing on the art of glass pro-cessing and made-in-Italy technology, the central themes of the forthcoming Vitrum show. The main tour stops will be Venice and, more particularly, Mura-no -- the iconic cradle of glass proces-sing, where this material is crafted into a veritable jewel -- and Maranello, the temple of the automotive industry par excellence, where the press will be of-
fered an exclusive visit to the Ferrari museum. During the two-day event, the guests will find out about the new features of Vitrum 2013, where high technology applied to glass will reign supreme in a setting designed in per-fect, authentic “Italian style”.

Glasspex India show which took place in the Bombay Convention & Exhibition Centre in Mumbai last March, po-sted good results in terms of visitor attendance and exhibi-tor participation from 22 countries. Be-cause of this, the Bombay exhibition has confirmed its pulling power among the key players in the glass industry who voted it an ideal venue to feel the pulse of the Indian market and respond to its interest in products from abroad. Triulzi, a company that has been syno-nymous with top-quality glass proces-sing machinery for 60 years, is a widely recognized name on the Indian market thanks to the numerous machines in-stalled over time that have managed to bear out the company’s quality-orien-ted industrial philosophy. “We had a re-presentative booth at Glasspex -- says the company’s export manager Rober-ta Triulzi -- where we presented the new machines that were already well received at Glasstec, such as our line
of both vertical and hori-zontal compact machinery. We are also working on a number of brand-new technological solutions that are curren-tly being tested. Despite the fact that the Indian show was primarily intended for the hollow glass market, we had in-teresting meetings and scheduled im-portant appointments for the forthco-ming Beijing exhibition”. India’s growth is slower but steadier than China’s and the potential for the glass industry is growing. We believe that the building and automotive industries are in an ini-tial phase of growth acceleration that will pick up pace over the next few ye-ars. “According to our local agents -- concludes Mariella -- the economy should shift into higher gear in the next

Ocmi was also very happy with its par-ticipation in Glasspex 2013. The com-pany is a leader in the production of hollow glass machinery and it showca-sed its latest products for the produc-tion of pharmaceutical and cosmetic containers from glass tube and of sea-led, pressed, or pressed and blown items. “As regards the former, says the company, our reputation is backed up by Ocmi India, the local production and sales center inaugurated seven years
ago that is gradually being expanded. Ocmi India is today the go-to supplier for index vial forming machines for all local and non-local manufacturers. Vi-sitors to our stand were interested in the latest technological innovations of-fered by the new 16-station TAM16 ma-chine.” Pride of place was given to the new control and annealing line for vials that handles the production of two vial forming TAM16 machines and transfers it to two separate boxes. “Although the

local market demand is mainly focused on vials -- adds the management of the Milan-based company -- the advent of
medium/large sized players in the indu-stry has spurred demand for numerous installations of ampoule forming lines manufactured in the French factory of Moderne Mecanique, an Ocmi group brand, whose 30-station MM30 forming machine boasts more than 1000 installa-tions all over the world “. In the ampoule sector, Ocmi has introduced the new au-tomatic PM-A ampoules packing machi-ne and a gas hood for annealing lehrs. These solutions have been developed with a view to cutting labor and energy costs. “ “Glasspex 2013 - they conclude – has opened the way to new short and medium-term projects and has confir-med the buoyancy of the local market that is increasingly more interested in the quality control delivered by Ocmi throu-gh its vision systems.”

Every two years the date with Vitrum returns and is revitalized. A remarkable opportunity to sharpen the focus and vision of glass industry professionals, but also, to move beyond the present, to project this perspective toward a future that intensi es every day with promising potential. Companies, products and cutting edge strategies will once again be the unrivalled stars, but not the only ones. In counterpoint to the productive and sales themes will be an event that will waft along on the aroma of good taste launched by Vitrum Gourmet Festival. It promises to be a truly special event, successfully promoting, once again, not only the culture of glass but also the exquisite taste of Italy.

Officina Meccanica Schiat-ti Angelo Srl has been in business for 63 years and with the third gene-ration of the family now
taking over the helmsmanship, the company is a leading producer of glass processing machinery across the world. All the machinery is made with carefully selected materials and com-ponents and by working closely with customers to offer bespoke solutions for the most specific needs. “Know-
how is one of the must-haves that we need to focus on to remain competitive on the global marketplace – co-owner Cinzia Schiatti pointed out – in order to adapt in the best possible way to the needs of glass companies, be they small workshops or large-scale enter-prises: here ‘flexibility’ is a must for ma-ximum quality and high productivity”. What makes the Brianza-based com-pany stand out from its competitors is a ‘philosophy’ that melds leading-edge performance with very easy use and

maintenance; the structural simplicity of machines means that if there are any problems, any section can be acces-sed without taking most of the machine apart, which makes for quick repairs and offers cost and time savings for the glass company. Added to this is a ma-jor focus on eco-sustainability which comes across in the recycling of pro-cessing water and low electricity con-sumption for every product in its cata-log; its straightline grinders, double edgers, complete grinding lines, and drilling centers, etc., all feature reliabili-ty, quality performance and durability. As a result of its technical and con-struction experience, Officina Meccani-ca Schiatti Angelo has won over foreign markets with its business model: be-cause of their versatility almost all of the machines are expor-ted, accounting for 95% of total sales. “Italy – Schiatti con-tinued – is going
through a dangerous economic torpor which is slowing down an entrepreneu-rial system that may have everything it takes to compete on a quality level with the leading European manufacturers. Brazil accounts for the largest share of our overseas exports (50% of total ex-ports); the challenge for the near future is to expand in the rest of South Ameri-ca as well as in all the markets that ap-pear to have left the economic crisis behind them, such as North Africa and Russia, a country that is particularly buoyant at present. China Glass and Mir Stekla are important appointments where we can showcase our offerings to markets which appreciate real Ita-lian-made products”. Cinzia Schiatti’s words remind us how important it is for a company to keep upgrading in order to remain on the market. “R&D is a priority that we have never stopped in-
vesting in: our “older” machines are upgraded and new machi-nes respond to the shifting
needs of the sector. Here, the most significant machine is perhaps the variable angle SME10 for normal flat edging with arrises and 0° to 45° angles. We are also working on other solutions that will be presented at Vitrum in October”. When asked to comment about how the Italian glass industry is faring in her capacity as the president of Gimav, Schiatti pointed out that “the situation in Italy is a very delicate one; too many companies are closing down because of the heavy tax burden”. “Although I do not want to speak about politics, an overall stra-
tegy is definitely la-cking to counteract this sta-
gnation and motivate businesses by offering major incentives as is the
case in most other countries. While not accounting for a very large share of our business, the domestic market ac-counted for 30% of our sales until 3 ye-ars ago, but this is no longer the case. It’s a sad situation that is affecting all companies whatever their size. This calls for urgent measures and, most importantly, a stable country to enhan-ce our credibility overseas”, Cinzia Schiatti ended.

A ssovetro is the National Association of Glassma-kers and is affiliated with Confindustria. One of its suggestions for environ-
mental sustainability is the assigning of eco-recognition awards or environ-mental marks to containers obtained from a high percentage of recycled ma-terials, as well as the collection of qua-lity glass by color type. The very presi-dent of Assovetro’s hollow glass division has pointed out how glass re-cycling is “the best example of sustai-nable economics because glass is a material that can be 100% recycled and maintain its same original qualities. Unfortunately however, differentiated glass collection is all too often of a poor
quality. There is a need to de-velop and support single mate-rial collection of glass contai-ners for vaster recycling and to promote color-separate glass collection. This has only been tested in the cities of Verona and Versilia to date. Compa-nies are doing their share to in-crease the use of waste by de-veloping technologies to color-separate glass fragments directly at treatment facilities”.As a result, containers having a
high content of recycled material (at present all glass bottles have a recycled content of more than 70%, with peaks of 90-95%) would receive eco-recogni-tion, in order to promote ethical manu-facturing processes where a new con-tainer is made from the waste obtained from a container that has been re-cycled. The environmental benefits are clear: more efficient production, energy savings, fewer raw materials and air emissions. Noteworthy among the other sustainability proposals advan-ced by Assovetro, are the harmoniza-tion of separate glass collection sy-stems in the country, establishing and maintaining simplified procedures, and using standards that are clear, simple and effective.

PALAIS LUMIÉRE will shine with Vetro Artistico di Murano (Murano Glass) The agreement between Consorzio Promovetro and Maison Pierre Cardin will ensure that the interiors of the futuristic tower contain Murano glass and will contribute to re-launching this historic Venetian industry
T he Vetro Artistico di Mura-no trademark once again makes international headli-nes, thanks to a recent agreement between the
Promovetro Consortium and Maison Pierre Cardin. These handcrafted objects of guaranteed excellence will take their rightful and exclusive place in the interiors of the Palais Lumière -- the striking, futuristic tower that fashion de-signer Pierre Cardin plans to build in the mainland Venice area of Marghera. They will enhance the public spaces and common areas and also, whenever one of the 1,500 apartments is furnished by
Maison Cardin using artistic glass, this will exclusively be glass produced on the island of Murano and bearing the Vetro Artistico Murano trademark. Corri-dors, meeting rooms and residences will be illuminated, embellished and decora-ted with Venetian glass, a product of the last true industry remaining in Venice -- not just chandeliers, appliques, and flo-or amps, but also vases, objects, sculp-tures, and all kinds of products selected to make the spaces more comfortable and stylish in the new building that will rise above Venice but rest on solid ground. As regards downstream activi-ties, for Murano the agreement transla-

tes to a job valued at 20-25 million Euros. This undoubtedly will mean work for busines-ses and for labor, the resurgence of an entire industry, and an injec-tion of confidence for those who want to con-tinue to produce art, and other things, in Murano. But it also me-ans hope for families and for accommoda-tions, and increased re-venue for local coffers and the city of Venice. In other words, an initiative that will take Murano glass to new heights and new horizons -- a real, long-anticipated evo-lution of the glass making tradition. And that’s not all; the other initiatives called for in the agreement will ensure that Mu-rano Glass takes center stage through the creation of exhibitions and partner-ships with the Design University, that will have its headquarters inside the ar-chitectural complex. “The significance of an agreement with Promovetro - re-marks Rodrigo Basilicati, nephew of Pierre Cardin, designer of Palais Lumiè-re - lies in the fact that Murano will flou-rish again and thrive in the restoration of its thousand-year-old craft. More recen-tly, thanks to globalization and the me-dia, the differences are disappearing -- anyone opening a business in Italy in the last ten years could manufacture in the same way a Chinese company of the same age does. But the closure of many glassworks in Murano means the loss of a priceless heritage for the culture of the entire world. The glassworks need to re-open one by one, before another gene-ration takes over, otherwise, the glass
masters who have been forced into retire-ment will not have an opportunity to pass on the keys to their trade. Furthermore, we want to, and we must part-ner with local busines-ses in order to limit the impact of transport on the construction of the Palais Lumière. We plan to obtain Leed certification with the objective of reaching the goal of ‘zero emis-sions’, and an impor-
tant factor in that regard is mobility, which also has a bearing on CO2 emis-sions not only after, but also during con-struction of the project”. “Murano glass is Venice’s iconic product of excellence, and by extension, of the Veneto region and Made-in-Italy” -- continues Luciano Gambaro, president of the Promovetro Consortium. “To link our trademark with the name of Pierre Cardin and a project like the Palais Lumière, which we feel is courageous and far-reaching, is truly an honor. In addition to the undeniable commercial benefits for Murano, I belie-ve this kind of operation will also allow us to guarantee an international stage that drives visibility and popularizes the Vetro Artistico di Murano trademark, wi-thout which our glass and our art would not be able to combat and defeat the cancerous spread of counterfeiting and falsification of made in Murano pro-ducts. We acknowledge the sensitivities of Rodrigo and Pierre Cardin in wanting the superiority of our art, and of our glass masters who daily breathe life into the miracle of glass, to be part of this adventure”.
The massive glass sculpture is a stylized representation of the Palais Lumière, to which the Vetro Artistico® Murano trademark has been applied, to seal a partnership deal between La Maison Cardin and the Promovetro Consortium. This unique piece, created by the skilled hands of a Murano master glassmaker, is approximately 40 cm high and made of light green glass and crystal
