SPOT LIGHT

1. What inspired you to take up cricket?

I was a volley ball player, I started playing volleyball when I was in 8th standard. I used to play at home with my brother and friends. I was in Sports Authority of India. When I was 17 years, I got my leg injured, after that I quit playing Volleyball. I just came to college and joined first year degree. In PU we didn't have cricket. Padmini ma'am and Coach RK as we knew him, were there. Padmini ma'am told me “you can play cricket when you can't play volley ball” since I could play in college but not for the state. I was a fan of Mahendra Singh Dhoni so I took up cricket as a wicket keeper. After I played cricket, within one year I got selected for u- 19 (under 19) team. From there I started playing full-fledged cricket.

Video analysis is like performance analysis. I will be assisting the main head coach. I will be watching the video from when the bowler starts bowling, from where he is bowling, where he is pitching, what the batsman is doing and where they are committing mistakes. It's a complete analysis of the game and thus requires a lot of concentration during the entire match. In the evening I have to present a report to the team along with scores and a performance examination. It involves statistics and scores, runs, wickets, strengths, weaknesses, in the last three matches. The aim is to give a fair idea to the girls about the manner of their performance.

2. What is the work profile of a video analyst?

I have to balance between both home and work life. I have a daughter who is right now aged 6. I feel that being a woman, we have to learn to adjust to everything. I have to spend time with my family as well as my work. In a year, I'm out for almost 7-8 months, but I get to make it to home for two to three

Mala Rangaswamy used to play cricket in college, RV Girls High School, NMKRV PU, NMKRV Degree, played for University at college. Represented Karnataka, South Zone and India A Women Teams. Being one of the only 3 women Video Analysts in India she shares her experiences and reminisces about her College days in her chat with Rutuja S Rao.

3. How do you manage all the travelling that your job entails?

days a week and sometimes I get home after 20 days or even a month. My family is very cooperative. My Father-in-law, my Mother-in law and my husband are all very supportive. My husband helps in taking care of my kid making it a lot easier for me in my work. It's quite different, when I'm at home. At home, I'm most of the time on my feet, whereas at work, I get to live in five-star hotels and other such luxuries. There's quite a shift between the two worlds but it basically requires adjustment.

4. Do you still play at times? How does it feel when you do?

Usually there isn't much time to play, and I have also lost touch playing. But I do play tennis ball cricket and corporate cricket with my colleagues after our work is done and we can afford to spend a few minutes for playing. I certainly enjoy playing, and at

5. What role would you say sports and physical fitness play in our everyday lives?

most times I have male colleagues with whom I play, and we have a good time teasing each other about our skills and scores.

The most essential thing for any sports person is to be humble and confident, no matter where they go and who they represent. And maintenance of health, to be physically as well as mentally fit. It is also important for a sports person to also have an education. A minimum requirement I would say is devote sufficient time for study and have a degree. It is very important that students don't cut out their classes unnecessarily. Not everyone may have the potential to be able to play professionally so there must be some backup to fall upon. Many of our players have a degree. We have Anil Kumble who is an engineer, we have Javagal Srinath who studied mechanical engineering, Rahul Dravid graduated in Commerce, so studies are also very important in our lives.

6. What helps you stay focussed on the job?

A cricketer with passion for the game will definitely enjoy this type of work. We keep learning a great amount of things every day, watching different types of players, bowlers and batsmen. So if one has passion, the focus comes naturally with the interest and experience of about7-8 years.

7. Please share your experience in the college.

We didn't have friends the way it is now, hanging around near the canteen or the garden, I used to mostly bunk the classes, which is why I'm now strongly advising the students to not do so. Despite having missed so many classes, my lecturers were always very supportive, for all the three years. I have played for the university, represented the state in both cricket and volleyball while at college. I have received full support from the college, especially the commerce department and Padmini ma'am. My family couldn't afford to send me to the college. RV institutions has supported me for three years through endowment because I played for the state. The college not only provided the fees, but also with meals in the morning, afternoon and with some snacks in the evening. I have always got the DA and additionally, Padmini ma'am arranged for me to become a coach for the PU college volley ball team,

which became my pocket money. I owe my success to my parents and RV institutions. I am where I am because of them. The thing is, I come from a very orthodox family. I used to travel from my home to college which is about 18 kms. I have studied in one remote village called Thathaguni, Kanakpura road. It was my brother who told me to pursue my studies in RV high school. He had heard his friends speaking about the institution and then recommended it to me. At first I found it difficult to mingle with all the English speaking girls. Then I began playing volley ball and gained some recognition for it in the school. I had a teacher named Kuttiamma Joseph, she has helped me a lot. And after my 8th standard I was a champion at school.

8. Do you recall your playing days and intercollegiate tournaments during college?

Recently, a year back I had come to college and saw all the trophies kept there and was reminiscing with ma'am that so many of those had come with our batch. We used to win in all the inter-collegiate events conducted by NMKRV. We had won the 'Zeal' tournament of the BMS College, we used to win the cricket tournaments that JNC used to conduct, and we used to play tennis-ball tournaments in the Malleshwaram KC hospital grounds. We have won a lot of our trophies from there.

9. Who was your role model? How did they inspire you?

I used to consider Dhoni as my role model, but when I started working, my mentor, Shashi Kumar, became my inspiration. It is natural in the sports field to be very competitive and hold power over the knowledge you've acquired, but my coach taught me all that he knew and gave me a lot of encouragement. I had never operated on a laptop or any of the technical devices that we use now. He taught me from square one about all the equipment and made me quite thorough with all the systems.

10. What is your message for all the sports students at our college?

Play hard, but don't bunk the classes unnecessarily. Education is also very important. It is also very important to have the right attitude and to keep your spirits high in any situation you encounter.

Hans Rosling, Professor of international health and global TED phenomenon wrote Factfulness co-authored by his son Ola Rosling and daughter-in-law Anna Rosling Ronnlund. The book begins with a thirteen-question survey to help the readers evaluate their awareness about the world around them. This survey has been conducted in over seventeen countries and only ten percent of the candidates got the right answers. Rosling points out that chimpanzees randomly pressing buttons got better results – 33% of the answers were right - hinting at our cognitive disconnect with reality.

Book Ten reasons we're : Factfulness :wrong about the world – and why things are better than you think.

Author Hans Rosling, Ola Rosling and :Anna RoslingRonnlund

The basic aim of this book is to try and correct the notion that the world is a terrible place. The media plays an important role in setting overdramatic worldview due to the unavoidable intra industrial competition and business and therefore presenting the news in the most exaggerated manner to attract audience. In Rosling's words –“The image of a dangerous world has never been broadcasted more effectively than now, while the world has never been less violent and safer”

Over his years of research, Rosling has found reasons for the misconception in the understanding of the world and tapers them to ten data-distorting human instincts. These distortions lead to bad decisions and stress. For example, Rosling talks about the fear instinct, which is our tendency to pay more attention to frightening things, which is why the most horrific news always make headlines, and this has been served to us for the longest time. But with a moment of thought, we will realize that the news has been specifically selected and chosen because it garners maximum attention.

In the book, Rosling explains the ten instincts that destroy our perspective and also suggests ways to control these instincts from overdramatizing our view of the world. The book though thought provoking and pleasantly optimistic doesn't deny any of the bad news but wants us to see things as they are and also pay attention to all the news that doesn't make headlines too.

The story is about two step sons who are trying to find a hidden treasure from past years and fulfill the wish of their dead father and ascend the throne. The new cop Narayana with his own wits tries to outsmart them and comes in contact with drama troupes who are on exile. What unfolds next is splendid to watch as this kind of experiment w a s n o t d o n e b y Kannada film industry in the past.

Set in a fictional t o w n c a l l e d Amaravathi, the

film is presented in a new genre called the southern odd fiction, and raises the bar for sandalwood in terms of technical standards and filmmaking.

The underwhelming (disappointing) aspect

Rakshith Shetty in the lead role of Narayan is a grey character cop with his own motives. He is the Indian version of Jack Sparrow who is on the lookout for the hidden treasure with c lues f rom Indian mythology. Shanvi Srivastava as Lakshmi in her limited screen time plays a vital role in twisting the story.

The debut director Sachin Ravi has done a commendable job in making a film in a u n i q u e g e n r e a n d created Amaravathi convincingly. The sets used are massive and worth appreciating. Ajaneesh Loknath's background score is the m o v i e s ' b i g g e s t advantage and worth commending.

The movie is a visual treat with a meaningful e n d i n g . P e o p l e interested in thriller genre with some good action sequence will enjoy it.

The way in which Narayana interprets mythology and takes clues from it paving the way of his journey is a visual treat. The good aspects of the movie are i t s c o s t u m e s , c i n e m a t o g r a p h y , screenplay and sound design.
