Don and Patricia Daily married Oct. 6, 1960. In 50 years, the couple raised two daughters, Debbie and Tawndy. Early in their marriage, Don served as a technician at Cummins, a local diesel engine design and repair plant. He worked there for 40 years, while Patricia stayed at home and raised their daughters. Since Don retired in 2000, the couple had more time for their passion: fishing. Often, the couple travels to Laughlin, Nev., to fish. When Patricia is not fishing, she crochets blankets.

the urban harvestThe change of seasons doesn’t mean a vacation for the farmers at Los Poblanos, a local organic farm. They continue to deliver their signature Harvest Boxes which are filled with produce harvested from the several active winter greenhouses and supplemented with fruits and vegetables from a network of regional, organic farmers. The farmers and apprentice farmers must do the less glamorous but equally as important off-season work. Clearing of last season’s crops, field clean up and construc-tion of new greenhouses are all fundamental aspects of the famers winter work. To aid in the difficult job of maintaining 36 acres of farmland and also to cultivate a new generation of farmers, Los Poblanos offers apprenticeships for prospective farmers. With an emphasis on creating a cohesive union of professional farmers, ap-prentices and community members, Los Poblanos poses the question “Who’s you Farmer?”

Española is the lowrider capital of the world. Cruising along Riverside Drive, there are a handful of low riders, their hydraulics hopping up and down. The cars’ metallic paint sparkles, and chrome shines like mirrors. Judging by the cars’ intricacies, it’s clear the owners dedicate themselves to the craft. The paint jobs are detailed, and window decals commemorate loved ones. New Mexico is bonded to its low-riding culture.

THE GOLD MAESTROMartin “The Gold Man” Horowitz has been a frame maker for more than 40 years. He first opened a frame shop in the heart of tin-pan-alley Manhattan, at 28th Street between Sixth Avenue and Broadway Avenue.“I used to ride my Harley down the West Side Highway in the middle of the winter,” he said. “Put a leather jacket on, a scarf, and then go to work. But those days are done.”Looking to escape cold winters, Horowitz moved to Santa Fe in 1988 for the high, dry air, where he started Goldleaf Framemakers of Santa Fe. His mentor, an old maestro, taught him how to gild objects. The shop, on West Alameda Avenue just north of the Plaza, provides clients with quality custom frames. “We are the best shop in this country,” Horowitz said. “When it comes to the technique of gilding and the art of making frames, there is nobody else better in the business.”

¡Suavemente!Sara Rhodes began flamenco dancing when she was 13. She couldn’t get into a ballet class at the Public Academy of Perfor-mance Arts. Now 20, Rhodes said flamenco is a mix of singing, dancing and percussion. “For the lack of a better analogy, flamenco is like the rings of hell

— not that it’s hell,” she said. “It’s got these rings to it, and as you keep descending into it, it becomes different things, but at the same time, is still very cohesive.”When not studying for classes, Rhodes teaches and assists at the National Flamenco Institute. She also dances with the renowned flamenco company, Yjastros.

Vanessa Sanchezpoems for strangers

Joe Williams was whisked off to a light-filled universe after reading Pablo Neruda’s poetic words.“I love you, and my happiness bites the plum of your mouth,” the poem reads. In his thick, southern accent, Joe find his own words after reading Neruda’s poem. “It sounds like somebody really likes somebody,” he said. “Thank you for shar-ing. Now let me share something back with you.”He then opened up the book that rested on the table, explaining the geo-graphical images that lined its interior.

togetherA band is an organism. The members serve as indi-vidual organs working in concert towards a common goal of creation. They mix and match, experiment-ing with their individual creativeness, as if piecing together a puzzle. This process sometimes results in squabble and frustration, but they press on,

driven by the desire to recapture a feeling of cre-ation. They let their instruments fall slack in their hands and meet each other’s eyes with bright, understanding glances that say, “Word. That was good.”

Dreams and SugarLauren Yevoli is a workaholic.Three times a week, she works at the Starbucks in Zimmerman Library. The other two days, she works for the Commercial Asso-ciation of Realtors New Mexico. Afternoons she devotes to class and homework. Yevoli is a UNM junior, double-majoring in photography and psychol-ogy. This year, she took out a student loan to pay for school. Because tuition and fees went up 7.9 percent, Yevoli’s parents

could no longer afford to pay for her and her brother to go to school. That forced Yevoli to work mul-tiple jobs to make payments. She said it’s hard to juggle school and work, leaving lit-tle time to spend with family, friends and her boyfriend. “Being busy all the time just gets really stressful, and it’s hard to work everything in with the jobs and school and home-work and family,” Yevoli said.
