Quotes byMa Sarada Devi
We were all drenched with festive spirit in
the months of October and November.
Dasara, Diwali and the month long
observation of Kartika austerities were
followed by Skanda Shasti and our
Suryanamaskar event. Observing the
austerities of Kartika has been a custom since
ages. In primitive societies, customs were
powerful means of social self control but in
modern times their force has decreased. Any
vrat creates a shield of determination to
protect us from distraction and personal
laxity and I personally feel we should make
this a lifes program.
Skanda shasti is the joyous occasion for us
to worship Lord Subrahmanya in His
triumphant, all-conquering aspect, when He
annihilates the last remnants of the Ajnana
of the Jiva and signals the final conclusivevictory of the Divine over the undivine, of
light over darkness, of the ultimate Reality
by experiencing which we transcend all that
is transitory and unreal. His weapon the Vel
or spear reveals yet another great law upon
the higher rungs of Yoga. It tapers into an
absolute sharp point and vanishes into
nothingness above it. It represents the
absolute one pointed concentration. His
sacred alliance with Goddess Valli is symbolic
of absolute oneness, the union of Jivatman
with Paramatman. We shall be greatly benefited if we reflect
upon these truths rather than giving more
significance to the religious aspect of
festivals.
3Do the Masters work, and along with that practice spiritual
disciplines too.
Self efforts and Selfless efforts
Swami Nachiketananda
Self efforts or Selfless efforts? The answer to this question has been
sought and thought since agestogether by ancient sages, intellectualsand even ordinary minds. Self effortmeans where you are involved, yourI is involved, your body and mind areinvolved, your personality is involved,
your behavior is involved, yourcharacter, your relationship is involved, your intellect is involved but not theSelf. Even though we say there is Selfeffort in it, it is far from the Self or it isdevoid of Self. As we know efforts arealways limited and the outcome of thatwhich is limited will also be limited. Itwill have a limited impact on you oryour action. These limited effortscannot be transformed into unlimitedor permanent efforts until and unlesswe understand what Selfless effortsare.
Selfless effort means where there isno I or body and mind or intellect orpersonality or character or behavior orrelationship. In Selfless efforts Self isvery much involved. If you are in searchof Divinity or Spirituality or Supremeconsciousness or Self then it isimportant to know the role of Selflessjourney through the corridor of life.
Through Self efforts you can achievematerial world or understand thisworld better than others, but notcompletely what this world is about.
Whereas when your efforts are Selflessyou find the real world or a spiritualworld beautifully woven by God,expressing inner beauty by usingexternal world. Same fabric He uses tocreate both the worlds. There is noseparation between inner and outerworld or mundane and spiritual world.
What a wonderful creation! It is just amatter of fine tuning ourselves withthe subtle energies and you will be ableto find your Self, will be able tofunction through Self and will be ableto experience that which is beyond I.
But you need to earn on your owneverything that is possible by Self effortsor Selfless efforts. People are there tosort out your problems when youfunction through Selfless efforts.Whereas when you want to sort outevery possible area of life with Selfeffort, you are on your own. You maynot be able to see anybody helping youout. You will be desperate to knowwhether anybody comes and joins youon this path or not, whereas when youstart your journey through selflessefforts you will never have to seek helpbecause there is help coming to you
through every object that you come incontact. Every object becomes thebest instrument to explore unknownareas of life. You will enjoy newdimensions of life. The same worldbecomes more transparent andclearer.
It is our perception that makeseverything either possible orimpossible. Therefore if we are able tounderstand the subtle differencebetween Self and Selfless efforts andstart our spiritual journey throughSelfless efforts, the time will come
where there will not be time or spaceand you will be simply experiencing theexpansion of your own Self beyondtime and space where tiny I becomesinfinite Self. So let us begin ourjourney of Selfless efforts by dissolvingtiny I into Self.

4One should always discriminate and strive hard for the
realization of God.
Swami Shivanandamayi
In Vedic times we used to
go on foot, now we have
many modes of
transportations. Due to
development in Science and
Technology man is living in
great luxury but is he happy? Is he able
to sleep well?In daily news you see many cases of
suicide. Unable to face the academic,
social or economic pressures many
people including youth are committing
suicide. Education is unable to save
victims from this escapist attitude.
What is happening? Why it is
happening? Do you have control on the
mind? Do you have control on the body?
Are you riding your mind? Or is mind
riding you? These suicides are
happening because of
imbalance. What will bring balance inthe life?
Today, man identifies himself with
education, career, marriage, children,
society etc. Dear sadhakas, if you are
thinking so, you are not right. Above
mentioned ones are only the phases of
life but not life. Life is something else
which has to be discovered by you.
Do you think the present education
system can give strength to withstand
the obstacles or difficulties of
life? Dear Sadhakas, aim of the todayseducation is survival or livelihood. It
doesnt teach us how to balance our
mind and body. Corruption and
greediness have found place in every
field whether it be political or
educational arena. Even Swami
Vivekananda said that the present
education system cannot produce a
man of character. Swamiji also says
that education is already within you, you
need to manifest it. That is what our
sages did. They not only discovered the
true life but they also experienced
beyond life and gave us treasure of
wisdom in various ways to discover oneself. Our sages and yogis had control
not only on the body and mind, sleep
and hunger but also life and death.
Manifestation of individual cannot be
learnt through present education. For
that you need to follow the ancient vedic
system. Swami Nachiketananda, having
identified the need of the hour conceived
the idea of popularizing
suryanamaskara and we started this
maha yaga. Suryanamaskar is not a mere
exercise, but is one of the ways of
experiencing ones true self. It is apowerful technique which brings
balance between mind and
body. Suryanamaskar is a combination
of Asana, Pranayama, Mantra and
Meditation and can be therefore called
the complete Sadhana.
Suryanamaskar works on subtle level
and brings harmony in various levels
of the life.
Just as Sun doesnt belong to only one
religion, Suryanamaskar also doesnt
belong to one faith. It belongs to the
mankind. If you discover yourself, you
can discover this entire universe at your
own will. So Suryanamaskar is a
powerful yet simple
tool to discover
your Self.
Spiritual Life
5Forbearance is a great virtue; there is no other like it.
R. Annapurna
Our life span is comprised entirely ofawakenings;some rudeand somegentle, eachone isp r e c i o u s .
However weneed tod e v e l o pawarenessto witnessevery singleone of them. There is no rule engravedon stone that we need to pass everytest that Life puts us through. As longas we learn from them, failures havemore to offer us than successes.
The so called civilized society tiesone down with the chains of fear offailure which alter his/her naturalbehavior. As chi ldren we are afraid todisappoint our parents, let down ourteachers and pals. As adults we worryabout the guaranteed economicsuccess, societal norms and approvalthat we avoid venturing off the track.Hence a huge gap between what wewish to do and what we actually do.Learning not to be attached to successas the outcome is the Primary measurewe can take to break these bonds.
Stranger anxiety, stage fear, askingquestions in a class, makingsuggestions in a company meeting aresome of the less risky areas to exercisethis freedom.
The Realized souls are abodes ofpeace since they have transcended
Awakenings
the standards of life set by the normsa n dexpectationsand live lifeas it comesand cherishpeople as
they are. Wecan achieveat least apart of thispoise andcontentment
by following few simple remediessince we cant afford to becomescientists of life and experiment withour daily duties and commitments. When something unexpected happensinstead of panicking review the eventfrom a positive angle (try hard you will
find one) and I bet you will find a gemof a lesson that can be treasured.Once by mistake I washed down myfavorite jewel down the gutter. I fretabout it and cursed myself for notbeing more careful. At one finemoment of that grief I got an insightas to how much value I was assigningto the trinket but now in the cess-pool, what I called a jewel is as goodas rest of the dirt! All the time it wasme who valued it high and made it apart of my identity. That awakening
has contributed to the alleviation ofmy attachment for precious things. It is in our minds to make every eventa learning experience and gain bigeven from a heavy loss. All we need issome patience and a fairly open mind.

How to experience differentdimensions of life?
Life is multi dimensional and this Lifeitself is a wonderful fabric throughwhich God has beautifully woven this
entire Universe. He did not leave anyplace where we cannot see diversity.Everywhere diversity is found andbecause of that diversity, life becomesmulti dimensional. This life is found inevery moment with total diversity. Nomoment is left without diversity. Therefore when it comes toexperiencing life we need to understandthis diversity first and accept it as it is.
We can try to understand thiswonderful phenomenon throughWater, Mud and Lotus plant. Water is
there, mud is there and Lotus plant alsois there. Everything exists. Water ismixed with mud, we say muddy water. Here we are able to see water butmuddy. We are not able to separatewater and mud and see it. From thatmuddy water the lotus emergesNowunderstand it clearly. Lotus is abyproduct of water and mud and theseed of lotus plant. Water and mud playgreater role in lotus plants life. Therefore we can say water is life, mud
is life and Lotus also is life. But to see orexperience water and mud in lotus isvery difficult. At the most you can seeLotus, leaves, stalk but not the wateror mud in lotus plant or life. To see wateror mud in lotus plant is to see orexperience different dimensions of life. With great Sadhana we can see life in
lotus. When this diversity isexperienced in one and one in many
then there is nothing to be known. Then you know everything. You will becalled the knower of everythinga true
Yogia liberated soul...Fabric is same but varieties are
many. Sant Kabir beautifully puts it -Kashi Kaba ek hai,
ekahi Rama Rahim
Maida ek pakwan bahu,
baitha Kabira Jeem.
Now, how to experience differentdimensions of life? There are manyways to understand and experience thiswonderful phenomenon. You can startintrospecting or experimenting in theoutside lab or make your body and mind
as a lab and start experimentingwhatever is possible as per guidelinegiven by your Guru. When you startexperimenting outside lab, you maywitness life but will never get even trueglimpse of it, whereas when youexperiment within or using body andmind as a lab then you will certainlyexperience true life. Difference lies inyour perception as well as inunderstanding. If we are seeingexternally then diversity is seen without
the essence, whereas when wedevelop subtlety and start seeinginternally then essence is seen withoutdiversity or in diversity.
Therefore make sure that you aredoing Sadhana sincerely in your ownlabthen you will see life in everyobject and in every moment.
Whenever you are in distress just say to
yourself, I have a mother7
CHILDRENS DAY CELEBRATIONS
November 14thmarks the birthanniversary of Indias first Prime
minister-Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru. As
a tribute to Nehru and his love for
children, the day is celebrated as
Childrens day. This day reminds us of
the significance of children in our
lives. At Tapovan , Chi ldrens day wascelebrated in a variety of
ways. Swamiji took the tiny tots
by surprise by inviting them
to compere theprogram. Pandu from UKG was
invited to light the
lamp. Sravani and Prasanna from
5thstd were asked to anchor theprogram. Within minutes they were
totally in command and excelled in
their new found job. Some of the
children mimicked the Teachers
and Mataji and the hall resounded
with peals of laughter. The dance
group gave a spectacular
performance. Sleeping Beauty was
screened followed by a questionnaire
prepared by Veni, our volunteer.
Children gave spontaneous answers
proving their smartness. Shekar was
awarded a special prize for his
outstanding performance in study and
behavioral changes. A special feast was
given to the children and they enjoyed

11As wind removes the cloud, so the name of God
destroys the cloud of worldliness.
Samuhik Suryanamaskar - Vote of Thanks
Just like any accomplishment, it all
started as a small idea of a great mind
that slowly started taking form and
materializing into a reality of great
scale and greater purpose. Like they
say When you want something, all
the universe conspires in helping you
to achieve it. This is all the more true
when the cause is good. Other than a
slight delay in the start time due to
10K related traffic jams experienced
by bus loads of school students, the
event proceeded very smoothly under
the able organization of Swamiji,
Mataji and perfect implementation by
many ardent volunteers of Nachiketa
Tapovan, inspite of the size of the
gathering. We owe this success of
Samuhik Suryanamskar to the helping
hands of all friends of Tapovan.
We thank SAAP Authorities of LB
stadium for considering our event as a
worthy sports event and renting us the
facility. Our thanks to Sri Ramesh for
helping us with the Public AddressSystem.
It is the learner who gives that status
to a teacher. We commend the spirit
of the students for taking this step
towards a healthier life and better
nation by diligently learning and
performing Suryanamaskara in the early
hours of a Sunday. We would like to thank
the parents for accompanying the
children. We mainly thank all the schools
for cooperating and taking efforts for
sparing time and sending students for the
training sessions and the event. Our
gratitude to Andhra Yuvathi Mandali,
Sanghamitra School and Radha Krishna
Balika Bhavan for letting us use their
facility for our training sessions.
We are thankful to all the sponsors, KVK
Energies and Hotel Sri Brindavan who
provided Aajya for this Yaga. We thank
Dukes for supplying Treff Biscuits and
Bibo waters for providing the refreshing
water to the students and their
attendants waiting in the Sun.
We convey our sincere thanks to the
Media giants like Eenadu paper and ETV
for covering the event and shedding light
on the humble activities of Tapovan.
With a little cooperation from parents,
school administrators, volunteers andsponsors, Nachiketa Tapovan pledges
that this is just the beginning and it shall
take up more such events with renewed
energy and doubled spirit.
Our heartfelt thanks to
all the Selfless souls!
10Through spiritual disciplines the ties of past karma
are cut asunder.
Samuhik Suryanamaskar at Lal Bahadur Stadium
Shortcuts to success are almost
mythical but Suryanamaskar is one of
the rare truths that can lead its Sadhaka
to physical, mental and spiritual
pinnacles when practiced with
persistence and devotion. Swami
Shivanandamayi and Swami
Nachiketananda with the sheer
intention of spreading this age old, time
tested and sage approved technique
among the budding youth of our nation,
started this Suryanamaskara movement
with the event in Lal Bahadur Stadium
on the 22nd November 2009 at 7:45a.m.
The expanse of the stadium studded with
a few hundreds of students looked like a
pond full of lotuses basking in the serenity
of shanti mantras and blooming at the
stimulating touch of rays of the winter
Sun, the most illustrious chief guest to
the program. Surbhi Dewra a brightfeather in Tapovans cap, graduate of
BITS Pilani and founder of Mera Career
Guide.Com, compered the program and
kept the spectators informed, engrossed
and well connected to the Centre Stage.
The special moment of the program was
when Ojas from DAV Public School, Aarti
from Nrupatunga, Pooja from Meridian
and Syed Imran from Vidya Bharati
lighting the ceremonial lamp. Swamiji
and Mataji conveyed briefly the
significance of Suryanamaskar to the
spectators who also got a chance towitness Matajis prowess in Agnisara and
Nauli kriyas. Swami Shivanandamayi who
stole the limelight congratulated the
students for taking the step onto the
Yogic path by attending Suryanamaskar
and also urged the students to continue
treading on this path towards a
healthier body, efficient mind,
sharper intellect, Spiritual life and
prosperous India. The core program,
the performance of Suryanamaskara
was carried on very smoothly, thanks
to Matajis clear instructions,
Students attention and awareness.
This was possible only because of
Suryanamaskar orientation
programs held by Mataji at several
schools for last one month. The
students did several rounds of
Suryanamaskara starting with mere
asanas, incrementally adding the
elements of pranayama, mantra and
meditation to them and finally
performed four rounds of full-fledged
holistic Sun Salutations. Towards the
end the groups of students of
Tapovan demonstrated their skill in
performing complicated yoga asanastwisting and turning their young
bodies effortlessly at lightning speed.
Siri Atluri yet another flower of
Tapovan pursuing her law degree,
aspiring to be part of Civil Services of
India presented the vote of thanks.
The program concluded with a
patriotic renderence of JanaGana
Mana and spirited Bharath Mata Ki
Jaichants led by Swamiji.

DearAtman
No man is an island. To fight the good
fight we need help. This has been the
basis for the Nachiketa Tapovans
inception and ensuing growth over the
last 10 years from a hut into a 3 storied-
building onto a 40 acre spiritual
complex. Imparting literacy to children
from impoverished families was the idea
with which the divine project started
before it grew into a multifarious
movement. All along Tapovans efforts
received great support from you all in
every way bringing fruition to the noble
intent..
The main focus has never shifted from
Vidya Mandir. Nachiketa Tapovan has
become the haven for the
underprivileged children who have
been nourished with not only milk and
food but also good academicssupplemented by the traditional values
of India. Vidya Mandir will be taking a
big stride this June from offering
Primary Education extending onto
Secondary Education. That is, this
academic year, Vidya Mandir will offer
classes ranging from LKG through 6th
grade.
It requires additional resources, both
monetary as well as human to fund this
progressive step. We hereby make a
fervent appeal for generous donations.
Please participate in this Vidya Daana
Yaga being performed to benefit the
most deserving children and help passon the legacy of our Cultural heritage,
Social values and Religious traditions.
It may kindly be noted that donations
to Nachiketa Tapovan are exempted
from Income Tax U/S 80 G of IT Act,
1961 of Govt. of India. Donations in
the form of Cheques/Demand Drafts
may please be drawn in favour of
Nachiketa Tapovan. We acknowledge
the generous contributions made by
donors.
