Newsletter of the Park LaBrea Residents Association ADVOCATING FOR THE RESIDENTS V.26.5 MAY 2014 FREE Recital and Reception Saturday, May 17 at 7:30 PM Park La Brea Activity Center Theater As Springtime is bursting with newness and beauty your Residents Association will pay musical homage to this Season by presenting a Recital given by Master Violist Victor de Almeida and featuring pianist Mitsuko Morikawa. This will be their first appearance at Park La Brea and it promises to be an unforgettable evening. A double prize winner of the 2008 Primrose International Viola Competition, Mr. de Almeida appears regularly as a soloist, chamber musician and in the Principal Viola seat with major orchestras throughout Southern California and the world. Most recently, he performed triumphantly at Royce Hall as guest soloist with the West Los Angeles Symphony performing Johann Nepmuk Hummel Potpourri (mit Fantasie) Op. 94 for Viola and Orchestra. This concerto’s reduction for viola and piano is one of the featured pieces which Mr. de Almeida and Ms. Morikawa will preform at Park La Brea. Contained in this work are some recognizable passages from Mozart and Rossini operas. The other featured piece is another reduction of a viola concerto by brilliant local composer, Cary Belling, subtitled "Equinox-A Seeker’s Journey." The seasonal equinox refers to the balance of day and night. The meaning of Mr. Belling's "Equinox," as described by the composer, refers to "spiritual poise that comes from accepting both blessings and challenges. In accepting both day and night, the good and bad of existence, one can transcend them both." Ms. Morikawa is known as a recording artist and for her collaboration with a long list of distinguished musicians including Martin Chalifour, Rodney Gilfrey and Akiko Suwanai. Mr. de Almeida is a graduate of the Peabody Institute of Music of Johns Hopkins University. He recently completed the recording of his arrangement of Igor Stravinsky "The Rite of Spring" and "Suite Italienne" for viola and piano with the sponsorship of the Stravinsky Foundation. Both the Concert and the Wine and Hors d’oeuvres Reception are FREE to Park La Brea residents and their guests. Seating is First-Come, First-Served. Arriving early is highly recommended as seating is limited. For more information contact the PLBRA Office Tel: (323) 934-1177 or E-mail: [email protected]. Spring Recital

The “Sandwich Generation” refers to the large number of adults who are dealing with both young children and aging parents. If you are a member of this group, it may be challenging to find a safe and reliable investment that protects your family and addresses your specific needs. However, there are more options than you may realize.

Preparing for the future.

Caring for others is a large responsibility. But, there are many steps you can take to ensure that your loved ones are taken care of if something happens to you. First, contact an estate-planning attorney to help you write a will and make sure to update it when circumstances change. Secondly, think about purchasing life insurance, which can be tailored to the specific needs of you and your family. For instance, a term life policy can provide affordable death benefit protection for a certain number of years and may be eligible for conversion to a whole life policy at a future date. Whole life policies provide financial security later in life and their cash value can be borrowed against to serve as an alternate source of funds as needs arise.

While there are events you can plan for such as your retirement or your child’s education, caring for an elderly parent can be unpredictable. While savings and investment accounts can provide some assistance, so can the right insurance.

Simply put, members of the Sandwich Generation do not need to go it alone. Term life insurance, whole life insurance and long-term care insurance are three strong resources that can help provide financial protection for changing needs.
