    Dear Confreres,

    A Reflection on Gratitude

A friend of mine shared with me that gratitude more than anything is the simplest, practical and visible

way to build up relationships between God and me, my neighbour and myself.

    Rabindranath Tagore says,

“The infinite gifts come to me only on these very small hands of mine.

Ages pass, and still thou pourest and still there is room to fill”

A man whom many believe was the greatest American President is a good example. When he was 7 years

of age, his family was forced out of their home and he went to work. When he was 9, his mother died. He

took job as a store clerk when he was 20. He wanted to go to law school, but he didn’t have the education.

At age 23 he went into debt and took years to repay.

When he was 28, after courting a girl for four years, he asked her to marry him, and she turned him

down. On his third try he was elected to congress at age 37, but then failed to be re-elected. His son died

at four years of age. When this man was 45, he ran for the senate and lost. At 47, he ran for the vice

presidency and lost. But at age 51 he was elected President of the United States.

The man was Abraham Lincoln, a man who learnt to face discouragement and move beyond it. It was he

who, in the midst of the civil war in 1863 established the annual celebration of Thanksgiving, a feast that

is most drawn to Americans and celebrated by almost everyone. Lincoln learnt how important it is to

stop and thank God always and even in the midst of difficulties.

The 20th century Protestant Theologian Bonhoeffer said that it is only through gratitude that life becomes

rich. The Koran says that if you count God’s blessings, you will not be able to number them. And there is

a Jewish proverb that says we will never know all that we should be grateful to God for.

Abraham Lincoln says that we can complain because rose bushes have thorns or thank because thorny

    bushes have roses.

An ungrateful heart turns everything into bitter, selfish and dissatisfied people. And there is nothing that

will do more to restore contentment and happiness than a true spirit of gratitude. If our hearts are filled

with gratitude for all the innumerable blessings of God, there would be no space and no time left for

    complaints and demands.

    Thank you.

    Yours in St. Vincent Pallotti

18 Taking charge of Canadian Delegature by Gloria Dei Region

Report of the Day of Taking over ceremony in the Western Canadian Delegature of

the Gloria Dei Region Vijayawada, India

A historic day has arrived in the life of the Pallottine Society in the Western Canadian

Delegature on Monday, June 8th 2020. Though the ABVM Province, Bangalore officially had

been transformed into three entities on January 6th 2020, the Canadian Delegature, which has

now been entrusted to the care of the Gloria Dei Region Vijayawada, India, has to wait for

the transformation to be effected, due to the outbreak of the global Covid 19 pandemic. The

pandemic situation is not yet out of the woods, but the restrictions have been eased for the

‘new normalcy’ for the reopening of the churches for the public Mass from June 1st 2020. And

taking advantage of the easing restrictions, the ceremonies were planned on Monday June 8th

2020, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Calgary.

Rev. Fr. Jojappa Chinnabathini SAC and Rev. Fr. Antony Santha Sunder Raju Narisetty

SAC the designated appointees for Delegate to the Regional Superior and the Bursar of the

Delegature respectively took charge of the Delegature in a simple liturgical celebration of the

Eucharist with just 12 participants. The holy Eucharist was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Francis

Mariappa SAC the outgoing Delegate superior of the united province. The Gospel of the day

was proclaimed and preached by Rev. Fr. Chinnabathini SAC. In his short homily, he said

that the beatitudes preached by Jesus, are worth longing for and we wish to have them.

However it is painstakingly difficult to achieve them. To realize the effects of the beatitudes

one has to consistently persevere for a longer time. The Pallottine pioneer missionaries to

Canada persevered in their struggle and preserved the legacy and charism of St Vincent

Pallotti. He also recalled and thanked the German confreres from Heart of Jesus Province, the

confreres from ABVM united Province Bangalore for the contributions to the life and

  • 14

mission of the Delegature. He also exhorted every member working from three separated

entities that we strive for the unity, cooperation and collaboration as Pallottines for the good

of the local and universal Church. Then, the new Delegate to the Regional Rector, and the

Bursar of the Delegature made profession of faith and took oath.

Following the Eucharist, a small group of confreres consisting of previous office bearers and

the present office bearers met for the official handing over and discussion. It was followed by

another meeting with Fr Francis Mariappa SAC and Fr. Antony Michael Cruz SAC the

other two coordinators of the ABVM Province and OLGH Province respectively, working in

Canada. It was followed by Agape meal. We also thanked Fr. V. Irudaya Paul Raj SAC, the

Pastor of St. Cecilia Church for making available the Church and the facilities and arranging

a delicious banquet for this red letter day. All the participants were thanked on behalf of Rev.

Fr. Arogyadas Kottana SAC the Regional Rector of Gloria Dei Region Vijayawada.

    Rev. Fr. Jojappa Chinnabathini SAC

Delegate to the Regional Rector, Canada

    Gloria Dei Region, Vijayawada, India

We appreciate the efforts of the Delegate, Bursar and the members. I offer my

congratulations on this first important step.

    21 Gratitude

I express my gratitude to God for his healing touch in the moments of my illness.

Starting from Fr. Jacob Nampudakam, our Rector General, Provincials, Fathers and

Sisters, I wish to thank for their prayers and concern. I express my gratitude to the

members of my Region, my community at Pallotti Vidyanam for their prayers and

concern. In a special way, I thank Fr. Banu Bodula for his continuous assistance in

all those days of my illness and recovery. I consider myself fortunate for the gift of

prayers of all of you and many others, because of whom I believe, I have received

healing from God. “Let all people praise the Lord”.
