KID’S PROGRAMSAccording to the Centers for Disease Control, one in three children born in 2000 will develop diabetes and at least 25% will develop hyperten-sion. Since diabetes and high blood pressure are the two leading causes of kidney disease, it is essential that we teach kids to lead healthy lives, right from the start.

The NKFM has a number of programs to teach kids how to prevent kidney disease as well as to improve the quality of life for those kids that have already been affected by kidney disease.

PATIENT SERVICESThe NKFM is committed to improving the quality of life for those people affected by kidney disease, therefore, we offer many programs to help. Programs offer help such as functional and vocation rehabilitation assistance to patients, trained peer-to-peer support, financial assistance to patients with emergency needs, and help paying for prescription drugs. PUBLIC POLICYThe National Kidney Foundation of Michigan advocates on behalf of people with chronic kidney disease through the legislature, government agencies and health care systems. Help create support for programs and policies that benefit people with kidney disease by joining the People Like Us Legislative Volunteer Net-work.

GENERAL PREVENTION PROGRAMS 70% of all cases of kidney disease, which were caused by diabetes or high blood pressure, may have been prevented, prevention is a top priority of the NKFM. The NKFM offers a range of prevention programs and services.

Healthy Families Start with You

Diabetes Outreach regions (TENDON, ECDON, and SEMDON)

Healthy Communities Start with You

PATH/Enhance Fitness

MINORITY FOCUS PREVENTION PROGRAMSMinority populations are at higher risk for developing diabetes and high blood pressure and are therefore at higher risk for developing kidney disease. Preventing disease in the minority population is important to the NKFM so we’ve focused many of our prevention efforts there.

PROFESSIONAL EDUCATIONStatewide professional education conferences and workshops are offered for physicians, nurses, dietitians and social workers which address current treatment advancements. These programs insure the highest quality of care for people with chronic kidney disease.

RESEARCHThe NKF and its affiliates work together to invest millions of dollars for chronic kidney disease research. We offer financial support for research projects focusing on the cause, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of kidney and urinary tract diseases. The two distribution mechanisms for funding are Research Fellows and Young Investigator Grant Program.

PUBLIC EDUCATION CAMPAIGNSThe NKFM provides a number of Public Education Campaigns throughout the year. The purpose of these campaigns, on topics from diabetes and high blood pressure, to dialysis and transplantation, is to educate the public on risk factors for CKD so they might be able to prevent or delay the disease. The campaigns urge people, among other things, to get checked by their doctor, look into their families health history and sign an organ donor card.

Our Guiding Principles • Prevent chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its leading causes; diabetes and high blood pressure • Pursue funding in support of our mission • Advocate for people living with and at risk of CKD

• Promote quality of care for people with CKD, diabetes and hypertension • Educate the public about CKD, diabetes, hypertension and obesity • Promote organ and tissue donation • Support research of CKD
