WHAT IF WE BUILT OUR COMMUNITIES AROUND PLACES?Placemaking is the act if collectively reimagining and reinventing public spaces as the heart of every community. Strengthening the connection between people and the places they share.

Like few other places, streets and sidewalk are a public stage where life unfolds Project for Public Spaces

In most towns, streets comprise 30-40% of ALL public space!

This tactical effort undertaken by BWM and Montclair BID focused on taking back a fraction of a fraction of what comprises 30% of our public realmthe street!7

and then came time to activate our new public space

10 Steps to a Great Public Space

1. Protection from traffic2. Protection from crime3. A place to walk4. A place to stop and stand5. A place to sit6. Things to see7. Opportunities for conversations8. Opportunities for play9. Human-scale10. Aesthetic quality

We wanted our demonstration parklet to better than the majority pop- up parklets.10

Public space should be the backbone of each new development plan not the space that is left over after everything else was planned. What is happening at the street level determines 90% of a projects success!

If the built environment supports human interaction and multimodal transportation people will walk, bike and congregate.Mall example.11
