Specification clauses
As a bonding agent
The bonding agent shall be Nitobond AR an acrylic basedemulsified solution containing a minimum of 43% solids andcompatible with cementitious materials. The bonding agentshall provide adequate bond strength when directly appliedon concrete and also mixed with neat cement.
As a mortar modifier
The mortar modifier shall be Nitobond AR, an acrylic emulsifiedcement modifier which provides good bond with concrete /masonry and improves the flexural strength, tensile strengthproperties of the mortar when added in the specified quantities. It shall be compatible with all common hydraulic cements.
Application instructions
Surface Preparation
The object of the surface preparation is to achieve a cleansound surface with a good mechanical key. All substratesshould be cleaned and free of dust, plaster, oil, paint, grease, corrosion deposits, and any other deleterious substances.Laitence should be removed by mechanical means. Oil orgreasy deposits should be removed by suitable means. Allsurfaces so treated should be thoroughly washed with cleanwater. Smooth substrates must be mechanically roughenede.g. by scabbling, needle gun or grit/ sand blasting to providea mechanical key.
Concrete repairs : Remove all surface dust and debris. Anyreinforcing steel in the repair area should be exposed aroundits full circumference and cleaned to remove all loose scaleand corrosion deposits and then primed with Nitozinc Primer.
Priming
Immediately before priming, the concrete substrate shouldbe thoroughly dampened with water and any excess beingbrushed off. Scrub Nitobond AR into the substrate. Avoidpudding of the emulsion. The repair mortar/topping shouldbe applied whilst the primer is still tacky. The bond coatbecomes tacky in about 2 minutes and best results areachieved if the mortar is applied within the next 5-10 min
In case of Nitobond AR slurry coat (1 volume of Ntiobond AR +1.5 volume of water + 1.5 volume of cement), best results areachieved, if mortar is applied within 5 minutes of applicationof bond coat.

Typical Mix designs to modify mortars :
OPC 50 kg
Zone 2 sand 150 kg
Nitobond AR 8 - 10 litres
Water Add sufficient water togive required consistency
Note : Trials are recommended to optimise mix designs. 1:4cement sand mortars can also be used with same dosage ofNitobond AR.
General recommendations
For repairs
Prepare surfaces thoroughly as previously recommended Cutback edges to avoid feather edging. Prime all surfacesincluding edges, using Nitobond AR.
All applications shall be wet on wet. For best results NitobondAR should be allowed to become tacky. If the bonding agent isallowed to dry for more than 15 minutes at 300 C initial 'grab' tothe repair mortar will be reduced. Therefore, the use oftemporary shuttering is recommended. Water content of themortar should be kept to the minimum necessary.
For consistent results, the use of clean, dry sand isrecommended. Where the use of wet sand is unavoidable, the quantity of water to be added must be reduced.
Cure mortars using Nitobond AR to prevent rapid drying out.
Protect uncured mortar from frost and rain. Do not retempermortar after initial set.
Minimum application temperature for Nitobond AR is 100C,but the mortar should not be applied if the temperature isexpected to fall.
For permanently immersed conditions consult Local Fosrocoffice.
Limitations
As a bonding agent
Nitobond AR may exhibit less overlay time at highertemperature. In such cases as overlay mortar shall not beapplied when Nitobond AR is totally dry.
Nitobond AR when used as bonding agent cannot act as abarrier coat against ingress of chloride ions from the substrate.
Equipment cleaning
Immediately after use, wash all tools with clean water.
Estimating
Packaging
Nitobond AR is supplied in 1, 5 and 20 litre plastic containers.
Coverage
Approximately 6 - 8m2/ litre depending on substrate

Application instructions
Surface Preparation:
The object of the surface preparation is to achieve a cleansound surface with a good mechanical key. All substratesshould be cleaned and free of dust, plaster, oil, paint, grease, corrosion deposits, and any other deleterious substances.Laitence should be removed by mechanical means. Smoothsubstrates must be mechanically roughened e.g. byscabbling, needle gun or grit blasting to provide an adequatekey.
Corroded reinforcing steel should be exposed around its fullcircumference and cleaned to remove all loose scale andcorrosion deposits. It is always preferably to clean the steelto a bright condition. Use of emery cloth, grit or sand blastingis recommended.
Priming
Reinforcing steel must be primed with Nitozinc Primerimmediately after cleaning. The concrete substrate shouldbe thoroughly dampened with water and any excess waterremoved before being primed by thoroughly scrubbing in aslurry coat of 1 volume Nitbond SBR to 1 volume water to 3volumes fresh cement.
In order to obtain a smooth consistency the cement shouldbe blended slowly into the liquids. Stir frequently during useto offset settlement.
Nitobond® SBR
Avoid 'puddling' of the slurry coat. The topping must be appliedon to the wet slurry. If the slurry dries out it must be removedand the clean substrate reprimed.
Typical Mix designs :

Cleaning
Tools and equipment should be washed with waterimmediately after use.
Additional Guidance
Prepare surfaces thoroughly. Toe-in at edges whereverpossible to avoid feather edging.
All surfaces including edges must be primed.
All applications should be wet on wet, the primer must not beallowed to dry.
The level of added water in the mix designs may needadjustment to achieve the required consistency. In generalwater content should be kept to the minimum necessary.
For consistent performance the use of clean, dry sand isrecommended. Where wet sand is used, reduce the additionof water as appropriate.
In order to prevent rapid drying, mortars should be properlycured with Concure WB, curing compound.
Protect uncured mortar from frost.
Do not retemper mortar or primer after initial set.
Minimum application temperature is 100C. For permanentlyimmersed conditions consult Local Fosroc office.

The concrete substrate shouldbe thoroughly dampened with water and any excess removedbefore being primed by thoroughly scrubbing in a slurry coatof 1 volume Nitbond SBR (Latex) to 1 volume water to 3volumes fresh cement.
In order to obtain a smooth consistency the cement shouldbe blended slowly into the liquids. Stir frequently during useto offset settlement.
Nitobond® SBR(Latex)
Avoid 'puddling' of the slurry coat. The topping must be appliedon to the wet slurry. If the slurry dries out it must be removedand the clean substrate reprimed.

Instructions for use
Preparation
All surfaces to be treated with Nitocote ET402 must be cleanand free from dust or loose material.
Concrete surfaces
All laitance must be removed by grit blasting, or other suitableremoval methods. The general standard of surfacepreparation should be in accordance with ACI 503R-89,Chapter 5, Paragraph 5.4. Following the preparation of aconcrete surface, care should be taken to ensure that anysurface irregularities are filled with Nitomortar FC*† orNitomortar FC(B)*†.
Metal surfaces
Any metal surfaces should be grit blasted to a bright finish, meeting the requirements of Swedish Standard SA 2½ orequal.
Priming
Concrete surfaces
Priming is not required on properly prepared concretesurfaces - see Preparation section.
Metal surfaces
All metal surfaces should be coated immediately afterpreparation. If this is not possible and to eliminate formationof rust, prime the metal surfaces using Nitoprime 25*.
Mixing
The contents of the resin can should be thoroughly stirred todisperse any possible settlement. The entire contents ofboth the hardener and resin cans should be poured into asuitable sized mixing vessel. It is recommended that the twocomponents are mixed together mechanically using a slowspeed electric drill fitted with a Mixing Paddle.. Mixing shouldbe carried out continuously for 3 to 5 minutes, until a uniformconsistency is achieved.
Although Nitocote ET402 is a non-solvented product, it is stillrecommended that mixing should take place in an open, wellventilated area.
Application
A minimum 2 coat application is generally recommended toensure a full, unbroken coating is achieved.
Brush application
Once mixed, the material should be immediately applied, ensuring that a continuous coating is obtained. The first coatis applied to achieve a uniform coating with a wet film thicknessnot less than 200 microns, and should be allowed to dry forat least 6 hours at 35°C before the application of the secondcoat.
The second coat should be applied between 6 hours and 4days (at 35°C) after the application of the first coat, at 45°Cthis will be reduced to 3 hours. The second coat should beapplied as above again achieving a wet film thickness notless than 200 microns.
Spray application
Where large areas are to be coated, it is advisable to considerspray application. Consult the local Fosroc office for furtherdetails and recommendations.
Cleaning
Tools and equipment should be cleaned with Nitoflor Solimmediately after use.
Hot weather working practices
Whilst the performance properties of Nitocote ET402 atelevated temperatures are assured, application under suchconditions can sometimes be difficult. It is therefore suggestedthat, for temperatures above 35°C, the following guidelinesare adopted as a prudent working regime:
i Store unmixed materials in a cool (preferablytemperaturecontrolled) environment, avoiding exposureto direct sunlight.
ii Keep mixing and placing equipment cool, arranging shadeprotection if necessary. It is especially important to keepcool those surfaces of the equipment which will come intodirect contact with the material itself.
iii Try to eliminate application in the middle of the day, andcertainly avoid application in direct sunlight.
Nitocote® ET402
iv For hand application, ensure that there are sufficientoperatives available to complete application within the potlife of the material.
v Have a ready supply of Fosroc Solvent 102 available forimmediate cleaning of tools after use.
Repairing and overcoating
Any applications of Nitocote ET402 which have becomedamaged can be readily overcoated.
The existing surface should well abraded, using a stiff wirebrush, or similar, to ensure that a good mechanical bond willbe achieved between the two layers.
Overcoating works can then proceed as for new work, alwaysensuring that the prepared substrate is free from anymoisture.
Limitations
Nitocote ET402 should not be applied over other existingcoatings, but can be applied on top of itself (see above).
For cold weather working (down to 5°C), it is recommendedthat materials are stored in a heated building and onlyremoved immediately before use.
Accelerated heatingmethods are not to be utilised underany circumstances.
- In contact with moisture/high humidity during cure, thecolour of the coatings will change to brown/red.
