Indian markets were not left unscathed either. BSE benchmark Sensex logged its second-worst point-wise fall on Friday 28 February 2020 as investors dumped stocks and flocked to safe haven assets. In the week ended on Friday, 28 February 2020, the Sensex fell 2,872.83 points or 6.98% to settle at 38,297.29. The Nifty 50 index slipped 879.10 points or 7.27% to settle at 11,201.75. The BSE Mid-Cap index declined 1,094.39 or 6.97% to settle at 14,600.02. The BSE Small-Cap index lost 1,037.51 points or 7.03% to settle at 13,709.01. Domestic shares slumped on Monday, 24 February 2020 as the spread of the coronavirus outside China spoiled investor sentiment with infections and deaths rising in South Korea, Italy and the Middle East. The S&P BSE Sensex, lost 806.89 points or 1.96% at 40,363.23. The Nifty 50 index fell 242.25 points or 2.01% at 11,838.60. Global sentiment took a beating following reports that South Korea raised its coronavirus alert to the "highest level" following a rapid spike in cases over the weekend. Italy's confirmed cases surged. Domestic shares ended with small losses on Tuesday, 25 February 2020. US President Donald Trump's two-day visit in India failed to boost investor sentiment. The barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, slipped 82.03 points or 0.20% at 40,281.20. The Nifty 50 index fell 16.20 points or 0.14% at 11,813.20. Domestic shares declined on Wednesday, 26 February 2020 amid weak global cues. The spread of the coronavirus has rattled investors across the globe who fear new outbreaks will push down global demand. The S&P BSE Sensex, fell 392.24 points or 0.97% at 39,888.96. The Nifty 50 index declined 119.40 points or 1.01% at 11,678.50. The market declined on Thursday, 27 February 2020. Trading was volatile due to monthly expiry of the February series of derivatives contracts. Stocks fell due to concerns that the global economy could slow down as China struggles to contain the coronavirus outbreak. The S&P BSE Sensex declined 143.30 points or 0.36% at 39,745.66. The Nifty 50 index lost 45.20 points or 0.39% at 11,633.30. Domestic stock market nosedived on Friday, 28 February 2020 mirroring a slump in global markets on fears that the coronavirus outbreak could turn into a pandemic and derail growth. The barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, tumbled 1,448.37 points or 3.64% at 38,297.29. The Nifty 50 index lost 414.10 points or 3.56% at 11,219.20. The market fell six days in a row and on all days of the week. On the economic front, National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) pegged the economic growth for the current fiscal at 4.9%, a tad down from 5% estimated by the National Statistical Office (NSO). However, for 2020-21, the NCAER expects the Indian economy to improve its growth rate to 5.6%. Indian economy grew by 6.1% in 2018-19. Investors were also cautious ahead of the India's December quarter gross domestic product (GDP) numbers to be released later today, 28 February 2020. On the political front, US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania were in India on a 36-hour trip. They visited Ahmedabad, Agra and New Delhi. It is Trump's first presidential visit to India. India and the United States finalised defence deals worth $3 billion. The deals were signed after delegation-level talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting US President Donald Trump. The deals are expected to enhance the joint defence capabilities between the two countries. In United States, stocks also came under pressure after IHS Markit reportedly said business in the US contracted in February for the first time in four years owing to disruptions caused by the coronavirus and growing angst over the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. In US, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned Americans to prepare for a coronavirus outbreak and investors attempted to assess the impact of the epidemic in China on global trade and travel. Coronavirus concerns continued to dominate headlines Europe. There are widespread apprehensions over the spread of the virus in northern Italy. Iran and South Korea have also seen a sharp rise in cases of the virus. The World Health Organization warned that a "sudden increase in new cases" outside of China is "deeply concerning," following a rise in infections of Covid-19 in Italy, South Korea and Iran. Italy remained the key concern for the region with the virus now having spread south, beyond its initial outbreak in the northern regions of Lombardy and, to a lesser extent, Veneto. In Europe, attention remains focused on the escalation of virus cases in Italy. US President Donald Trump said that the U.S. could consider restricting travel to Italy and South Korea but would not do so yet. Global cues, macroeconomic data, movement of rupee against the dollar, Brent crude oil price movement and investments by foreign portfolio investors (FPI) and domestic institutional investors (DII) will be watched in the week ahead. On macroeconomic front, India's infrastructure output data for January will be unveiled after market hours on Friday, 28 February 2020. The quarterly GDP estimate for the quarter October-December, 2019 (Q3 of 2019- 20) will also be released after market hours on Friday, 28 February 2020. India's Markit Manufacturing PMI for February will be declared on Monday, 2 March 2020. Markit Services PMI for February will be declared on Wednesday, 4 March 2020. On the primary market front, initial public offer (IPO) of SBI Cards and Payment Services will open on 2 March 2020. The price band is Rs 750 to Rs 750 per share. The IPO closes on 5 March 2020. The initial public offer (IPO) of Antony Waste Handling Cell will open on 4 March 2020. The price band is Rs 295 to Rs 300 per share. The IPO closes on 6 March 2020. Auto stocks will be in focus as auto companies will start announcing monthly sales numbers for February starting from 1 March 2020. The Week That Was

Stock markets across the globe are suffering their worst week since the global

financial crisis of 2008 as fears over the impact of the coronavirus continue to grip

investors. Indian markets were not left unscathed either. BSE benchmark Sensex

logged its second-worst point-wise fall on Friday 28 February 2020 as investors

In the week ended on Friday, 28 February 2020, the Sensex fell 2,872.83 points or

6.98% to settle at 38,297.29. The Nifty 50 index slipped 879.10 points or 7.27% to
