The Warrior’s Class of 2017 Senior Supplement 2 It’s our turn By Michael Zhou, Editor in Chief and John Hess, Opinion Editor It’s time for the next chapter of our lives. Each of the previous chapters of our lives— Elementary, middle and high school— are finally over. Our hands have been held our entire lives up to this point, but now, in this next chapter, we have full autonomy. Some of us will courageously serve our country and go into the military, while others will go directly into the workforce or study abroad. Most of us will be spending our next chapter on a college campus somewhere. Whatever we’re doing, there will be an adjustment. No longer will we have the daily grind of rushing to our first class at 7:40 or the pleasure of hearing Mr. Rickert each morning reciting the pledge. For the first time we will be, for the most part, on our own, no longer bound by the rules of high school. As we proceed down the different avenues of our lives we will have to discover who we are as people, with each decision shaping our new identities. Next year our safety nets will be gone. Our success will come as a result of the actions that we choose to take, hopeful that they are the rights ones. Furthermore, we will have the burden of fighting through our failures, to grow from them instead of letting them discourage us. It was the great Vince Lombardi who once said, “It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s about whether you get up.”

The onus of making friends and connections will now fall on us. There will be no parents making phone calls to set up playdates or pushing us to befriend the new kids. As we enter the world, we are all the new kids. It will now be our responsibility to be gregarious on our way to the enjoyment of life and the achievement of personal success. Our next step in life will not be easy, but Niskayuna has prepared us for the challenges which lie ahead. In complete honesty, we are all essentially flying blind out into the world. Sure, we may know what we want to major in or the career path we want to go down, but we have no idea what it is like to be citizens of the world outside of the Niskayuna bubble. However, uncertainty is not the enemy of progress or clarity. Instead, we implore you to use these next couple of years to find yourself, exploring the opportunities that life presents to you. Do not be scared as you head out into the world, but be excited. Have faith that your victories will be sweet and that your setbacks will teach you essential lessons to carry with you in life. Always remember the words of Eleanor Roosevelt, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Dream big and act with both your head and your heart. If you do, the people of the world will not know what hit them.

And now, we present our crown jewel, the Senior Supplement. In these pages, you’ll find the future plans of your classmates, thoughts from faculty and staff, and statistics about where we’re going from here. As a disclaimer, all information contained within the Supplement was independently collected, and as a result The Warrior is not responsible for its accuracy.

The Warrior’s Class of 2017 Senior Supplement 9

A last word from faculty and staff… Enjoy your next adventure - be safe - be smart - take care. - Mrs. Hughes

Pay attention to what you pay attention to. - Mr. Bloom

Set up a LinkedIn profile and minor in Spanish or another language because it’s a great compliment to many careers. - Sra. Linehan

Try new things. (Not THOSE things!) Have fun! (Not THAT much fun!) Return texts to your parents immediately. (Unless you’re in class.) - Mrs. Salvin

Explore the world… se as many ecological biomes as you can. Use the time to explore new cultures, discover new communities, and see what is outside Niskayuna. You can always return to Niskayuna if it is your true love. - Mr. Jennings

My wish for the seniors next year is that you jump in with both feet! Niskayuna has prepared you well so don’t miss a beat, get involved, give it your all… you’re laying the foundation for a bright future! - Mrs. Lindsay

“Statistical thinking will one day be as necessary for efficient citizenship as the ability to read and write.”- H.G. Wells Be open to paths that may lead you in ways that you least expect. Congratulations to the Class of 2017. - Mrs. Favata

Bring some of our favorite books to college so you can have some old friends to read. - Mr. Edgar

The great Greek philosopher Socrates once said: “To move the world, we must first move ourselves.” Therefore, to all the seniors, leave your comfort zones, go explore new classes, meet new people and challenge your minds. Be willing to hear creative ideas and learn interesting thought-provoking perspectives. Life isn’t just black and white. There are many shades of grey. It has been a pleasure to serve as one of your class advisors. Congratulations Class of 2017! - Sra. Christou
