Nisimazine
newsletter #1
After having found our way around the en-chanted thermal town of Karlovy Vary, we have now started finding our way around the films in the East of the West Competition in the hope of attaching some meaning to these the tired dichotomy of East & West. In this first newsletter the reader will meet the pro-tagonists of Yuma, a Polish western set on the border with Germany after the fall of Com-munism. Before the fall of Communism is the setting of Milos Forman’s classic The Firemen’s Ball, an hilarious parody of the regime. Last but not least we met with the team behind the Slovak film Made in Aš whose genesis you can read about in our interview.
Interview - Made in Aš

The Firemen’s Ball
Restored classics often come with an intimidating dose of self-importance and grandeur; Milos Forman’s 1967 feature on the contrary stands out for its unassuming genius and timely spirit. Yuma
Taking part in the 47th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival’s ‘East of the West’ competition, Piotr Mularuk’s debut film, Yuma, offers an almost surreal yet fresh de-piction of a true story of the aftermath of communism in Poland and the harsh reality endured by many living along the conflicted Polish-German border in the 1990’s.
