Amelia Cranstoun A2 Media Advertisement Analysis Nirvana – Nevermind Nirvana’s famous album cover is recovered for the use of their 20 th anniversary release. I can use this advert as it has elements in which I can relate to Lacey’s repertoire of elements. The Setting of the advertisement is a pool. This could represents connotations of fun and relaxation, highlighted by the use of the protagonist being a baby and inferring youth. However the use of a pool in place of other possible choices such as the sea or a lake, could infer the idea of isolation that may come with the lifestyle of the music industry. This image progresses with the of the dollar bill strategically being placed in front of the baby. This indicated the idea of the all American dream and of the youth in the modern era’s generation chasing money and fast lifestyles. Characters of the advertisements include the famous nirvana baby. The naked baby represents the youth and freedom the music of the band inspires. The nakedness could assume the music is stripped back and original pieces from the artist however it connotes another side of the rock and roll lifestyle, typically seen as the stereotypical wild bad boys. The advertisement has a conceptual narrative due to the many connotations the character of the advertisement can infer, however I would also state that the advertisement is also performance. This is due to how iconic elements of the artwork are, and that audiences will recognise and be so familiar with what they see that it is evident what band is being showcased.

Nirvana – Nevermind

Nirvana’s famous album cover is recovered for the use of their 20th anniversary release.

The baby in the water is iconic for the band as it’s recognisable for the public all around the world as a trade ark cover for one of nirvanas most successful albums. The font however is also iconic of the Band as it’s used on every artwork for the band. The advertisement also features a small label featuring the bands logo of a tongued smiley face. This logo is seen on most albums and band merchandise. The other fonts used on the advertisement are bold, thick and pointed form scripture. This is iconic of many rock and roll genres.

Tech codes such as the font which advertises the anniversary addition is surrounded by elements such as high key lighting and shading around the baby. This creates an underwater atmosphere, drawing in the audience to the mise en scene and involving them in the environment. This invites them to celebrate the 20th anniversary and therefore successfully publicises the product.
