    NINS3 Topics

    4

R&D Topic 1: Passive tomography of spent nuclear fuel R&D Topic 2: Alpha radiation threat detection and imaging from a distance R&D Topic 3: Active neutron interrogation of unknown objects Topic 4: Research-to-business (R2B)

  • Peter Dendooven STUK, 5 November 2014 NINS3 A new FiDiPro programme

    NINS3 Topics 1 & 3

    5

Passive tomography of spent nuclear fuel Active neutron interrogation of unknown objects

further development of exisiting equipment / efforts prototype at STUK (Topic 1) pilot project Finnish Defence Forces (Topic 3)

image reconstruction software: continued collaboration with Budapest University of Technology and Economics

    Geant4 Monte Carlo simulations

passive tomography is in a more advanced stage of development than active neutron interrrogation

  • Peter Dendooven STUK, 5 November 2014 NINS3 A new FiDiPro programme

    NINS3 Topic 2

    6

Alpha radiation threat detection and imaging from a distance

over the past several years at TUT / STUK: passive detection of ionization-induced UV luminescence of air

further development: solar-blind detection increase of UV light yield by

active laser scanning objects in pure nitrogen gas

mimic real-life threat scenarios use techniques on realistic sources

    Research-to-Business (R2B)

runs in parallel with the 3 R&D Topics

continuous survey of customer needs applications areas business potential patenting opportunities markets and competition

a separate coordinator will be externally hired
