REPORT 9

The Society suffered a loss by the death of its Patron, Lord Hazlerigg. Mr. C. L. Wykes, the Honorary Treasurer, was appointed a Trustee of the Research Fund in place of Mr. S. Parkinson, who has resigned; and Professor Jack Simmons became Honorary Editor of the Transactions.

The financial position of the Society caused increasing disquiet, especially in view of the rising cost of producing the Transactwns. It was necessary to reduce the size of Volume XXV, and further reductions will have to be made in the future if the Society's income does not substantially increase. At present it has a large annual deficit, which has risen from £I85 in I948 to £673 in I949· Speaking from the Chair at the Annual General Meeting on 29 April, Sir Robert Martin emphasised the gravity of the situation. Members are asked to do all they can to bring the Society to the notice of those who may be interested in its work, for its continued activity and efficiency must depend largely on an increase in its revenue.

The number of members of the Society remained stationary this year: seventeen were removed by death or resignation, and seventeen new members were elected.

The Society published two volumes in the course of I949: The Abbey of St. Ma:ry of the Meadows, Leicester, by Professor A. Hamilton Thompson (2Is.); and Studies in Leicestershvre Agrarian History, an offprint of Volume XXIV of the Transactions, bound in cloth and sold to the public at ms. 6d. Professor Hamilton Thompson's book can be bought from Edgar Backus, 44 Cank Street, Leicester; the Studies from the Society direct, at the Guildhall, Guildhall Lane, Leicester.
