From the Office of Mission Advancement “After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up to the mountain by himself to pray.” ~Matthew 14:22–23

The psychologist Carl Jung once said, “Busyness is not of the devil, busyness is the devil!” Stewardship is not about increasing our activities, but about establishing priorities in how we utilize our gifts. One of those priorities is prayer. Do we take time out to be alone with God?

Based on reflections prepared by Fr. Thomas Gentile and the Office of Mission Advancement.

August 9 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time 1 Kings 19:9a, 11–13a Romans 9:1–5 Matthew 14:22–33 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?

Question of the Week: Adult: When have you doubted God’s loving care for you?

Child: What helps you keep trying even when you are afraid?

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

Catechists Needed Our Lady of Lourdes values the religious formation of our children, and religious education is a high priority. Does sharing your faith with children interest you? Religious ed has some opportunities for catechists who are

open to virtual learning combined with traditional classroom work. Please contact Jennifer Stratman, [email protected] or call the Parish Office, 896.0241. Religious ed is offered on Sunday mornings beginning in September; more information on registration is coming soon.

Gospel Reflection Stewardship spirituality invites us to surrender control of our lives to God in grateful recognition of the simple fact that all we have is a gift from Him. The readings today illustrate what amazing things can happen when we fully invite God to take charge of our lives by embracing the stewardship way of life. When we take our eyes off God, we fail to see that all we have is a gift from Him. We lose trust in the Lord and we do not make our lives a grateful response to Him. Peter makes this mistake in the Gospel from Matthew. Jesus sends the disciples in a boat ahead of Him to the other side of the shore. Later that evening, Jesus casually strolls up to the boat, walking on the sea. He invites Peter to join Him. As Peter begins to walk on the water, he momentarily takes his eyes off Jesus to notice the strong wind surrounding them. With that, he sinks. But what if Peter had not taken his eyes off Christ? What a grand adventure he could have experienced walking on the sea with Jesus! When we take our eyes off Christ, the many blessings He has given us, and the loving way He treats us, we sink, too. When we embrace the stewardship way of life—letting go of a tight hold over our money, time and talents—our lives become a grand adventure, rooted firmly and gratefully in the God Who always cares for us.

Sacraments Baptism We welcome parents seeking baptism for their children, regardless of the child’s age. Baptism is celebrated seven times a year; preparation is required. Please contact the Parish Office for details.

Marriage Congratulations! We look forward to helping you celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage and preparing to live out that profound love in your daily lives together. Brides and grooms-to-be should contact the Pastor at least six months prior to your wedding date.

Anointing of the Sick This ritual is for physical, mental, and spiritual healing. Call the Parish Office to request anointing for a family member.

Contributions Every parish depends upon the stewardship of treasure of its members. We are no exception. Thank you to all who have mailed your contributions! Is it time to explore online giving? Visit the parish website for information from Faith Direct, or check with your bank for other options. If you use envelopes, you may change the frequency at any time; just call the Office.

Thank You This bulletin is furnished to our parish without charge. The advertisements that appear completely defray all publishing costs with which the church would otherwise be burdened. Please patronize these sponsors as a thank you for their kind generosity.

School Substitutes Our parish school has created a database of individuals who can be available as substitute teachers or assistants early in the school year. Even with everyone remaining healthy, there may be need for individuals to quarantine over

the next number of weeks, depending on circumstances, which means protracted absences are possible. With that in mind, Our Lady of Lourdes School seeks parents and parishioners who may be able to commit to Lourdes subbing only, to help minimize contacts. Please email Principal Jeff Beavin, [email protected] or call the school office, 895.5122.

Employment Opportunity Our Lady of Lourdes Afterschool Care programs have several part-time positions available. We are looking to provide afterschool care during this challenging time, and WE NEED YOU! The positions offer some benefits and competitive salary, plus a fun working environment! Hours: 2:30–6:00 PM, Monday thru Friday, except Thursdays, 12:30–6:00 PM. Please contact Dana Payton or Teresa Roehrig at 893.5881.

Family Ministries Marriage Moments 55 years ago on August 6 and 9, the United States bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It destroyed many lives. In any marriage there are times when we hurt each other, sometimes seriously. In your own marriage how do you heal? How do you forgive? It’s not always easy because love is not easy. Parent Pointers It’s hot in the summer. Perhaps you have air conditioning, but not everyone does. Invite your child to help you offer a cool drink to someone who needs it. Recently there was a cooler in front of a house with a sign, “Free bottles of water to anyone who wants one.”

Habitat for Humanity Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville will offer an open enrollment for its homeowner program August 6–29. Please visit the Habitat website to learn more: https://louisvillehabitat.org/housing-programs/homeownership/.

Advertising Opportunity We are in the process of updating our annual Guide Book & Directory for our parish. This book contains everything pertinent to our church: the various ministries, organizations, committees, activities, and events, plus a complete directory of all members. The directory is provided and direct-mailed to each family at no cost to the parish, as it is subsidized by local businesses that advertise. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our directory, please call the Parish Office, 896.0241. Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-advertiser. It “will pay” to advertise in our new Guide Book & Directory.

Nondiscriminatory Policy All schools in the Catholic school system admit students of any race, color, national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. Our Lady of Lourdes School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admission policies, scholarship and loan programs, or athletic and other school-administered programs.

Thank You Many thanks to our high school youth group and their adult chaperones who participated in the recent trip to Auxier. It was a great mission trip!
