NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR B) 12th August, 2018 Dear All, Let me express my heartfelt thanks to one and all who welcomed me to this wonderful community of the Holy Trinity Parish. As I complete one month of my journey with you, I thought I might tell a little more about my background. I hail from India as you already know, from south west of India a state called Kerala, known as Gods own country”. I come from a family of five with three brothers, 1 sister and my parents who are situated in Kerala, all busy with the family Timber business, except my sister who is a Teacher. I have four nephews and four nieces. This is my family background. When I was sixteen, I decided to be part of an another family, this is when I decided to join the Missionary Society of St. Thomas the Apostle, the order I belong to as a priest. My ordination was on 1 st of January, 1997. I was nominated and transferred to the Arch diocese of Melbourne representing our Order in Australia for the first time some 12 years ago after being a Seminary Staff nearly for 7 years and now six of us from our Order are serving the church in Australia in different dioceses. The Missionary Society of St Thomas the Apostle (MST) is a missionary venture of the Syro-Malabar Church started in 1968. We are now 340 priests and over 150 seminarians! MST is a Society of Apostolic Life with an exclusively missionary charism, whose sole goal is to spread the Kingdom of God through witness and apostolic involvement. Drawing spiritual enthusiasm from St Thomas, the Apostle of India and her patron, MST is committed to take up missionary responsibilities anywhere in the world through collective apostolate. So I am here at Holy Trinity Parish, and to me parish is all about YOU, praying together, working together, serving, socialising, supporting each other in good times as well as in times of difficulties and sadness. Together, we can be formed by the Spirit into a COMMUNITY, dedicated to spreading Gods reign wherever we are. My prayer is, Holy Spirit lead us to become aware of the people around us each day, those with whom we live, meet and work that we may keep calling each other to live the values Christ has set for us and are so needed for these timesFr. Reflection: In this age of spin doctors and carefully

worded media releases it is refreshing to turn to the

scriptures and discover a wealth of unvarnished truth.

Do you ever feel discouraged? Do you wonder sometimes

whether you have the energy to go on?

Are you tempted to give up?

As we hear it today, even the mighty Elijah, a prophet who

did many works of power, reached the point where he said

to the Lord, “I have had enough”. Take my life”. It is at this

very moment of abandonment that God provides him with

the resources he needs to carry on.

Is there an important truth here for us to ponder?

In those moments when we felt low, when it all seemed too

hard, what enabled us to stay the course? Did we find a

mysterious source deep within giving us the courage to go

on, the light to see our way, the food to strengthen us?

Jesus spoke to the crowd of the work of the Father.

Could we have been fed in this way with the Bread of

Life? Extract from “Break Open the Word”

Wednesday 15th August, Feast of the Assumption

(Holy Day of Obligation)

This is a key feast that honours the role of Mary as the mother of Jesus and stems from the time of Pope Pius XII who placed an emphasis on the importance of Marian devotion. It is a reminder to us of Mary’s unique relationship with God.

Masses at Holy Trinity Parish on Wednesday 15th August are:

10am - St Paul’s & St Catherine’s 7.30pm – St Peter’s

This weekend is CatholicCare Sunday Appeal—all donations will help to support the most vulnerable people in our community. Please read Page 4.

ADULT EDUCATION

RCIA - The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

is the process for welcoming and integrating new Christians into the Catholic community.

Are you or is someone you know curious about spirituality and the Catholic faith?

It is a gift in this secular world to already have two people wishing to join our RCIA journey for this year. We would love to hear from anyone considering exploring the Catholic faith or anyone interested in supporting the inquirers. Please contact the Parish 9579 4255. Your name will be given to Carole, a member of the RCIA team, who will contact you. A new group will begin this Sun. 12th Aug. at 9.30am. It would be great to have people from our Parish family sitting with and accompanying inquirers as they become more familiar with ‘what we do’ as Catholics!

Be assured you will all be warmly welcomed!

Relationships are at the heart of why CatholicCare exists and all of our programs and services focus

on helping people to build positive relationships and repair connections when needed. Individuals

and families, refugees and asylum seekers, kids in school, or people in prisons; there are times

when everyone needs a little help.

Matt was a typical teenager. His natural athletic talent saw him fit into

high school easily as he joined the football, cross country and

athletics teams. His future looked bright and he dreamed of playing

footy in the AFL.

When Matt’s dad left, everything started falling apart. Matt’s Mum had

to juggle long hours as a cleaner, leaving Matt and his three sisters to

fend for themselves. Within 12 months, Matt was sullen, destructive,

refusing to go to school and losing all interest in sport.

In desperation, Matt’s mum turned to CatholicCare’s School Refusal program. Counsellors met with

Matt, and with patience and encouragement, Matt opened up about his sadness at the absence of

his father. CatholicCare worked with Matt’s mum to help her to understand the reasons for Matt’s

changed behaviour. They also worked with Matt and his father to help them re-establish their

relationship.

Matt has since returned to school, re-joined the football team and most weekends his Dad comes to

watch him play.

Matt’s dreams are back on track thanks to the solid foundation of support from those around him.

Last year CatholicCare helped over 18,000 people like Matt and his family. We know that all families

face times of conflict and struggle, but some need extra support to get through. CatholicCare’s

mission is to strengthen individuals and families and equip them with the skills they need to face

life’s challenges.

At CatholicCare we are seeing more and more young people like Matt who are struggling with the

challenges and changes of life. They can easily find themselves on the margins of society, feeling

isolated and excluded with no idea where to turn. It is times like this, where CatholicCare’s programs

and interventions are needed the most.

Together, we can help those less fortunate in our community, and in our neighbourhood, who need

support. Together we can help people live ‘life to the full’.

Please support CatholicCare and their work by contributing generously to our appeal next

weekend.

THIS WEEK’S GOSPEL – John 6: 41-51

First Anniversary occurring at this time:

The Jews were complaining to each other about Jesus, because he had said, ‘I am the bread that came down from heaven.’ ‘Surely this is Jesus son of Joseph’ they said. ‘We know his father and mother. How can he now say, “I have come down from heaven”?’ Jesus said in reply, ‘Stop complaining to each other.

‘No one can come to me unless he is drawn by the Father who sent me, and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets: They will all be taught by God, and to hear the teaching of the Father, and learn from it, is to come to me. Not that anybody has seen the Father, except the one who comes from God: he has seen the Father. I tell you most solemnly, everybody who believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the desert and they are dead; but this is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that a man may eat it and not die. I am the living bread which has come down from heaven.
