O Come Let Us Adore Him
In today’s gospel passage, the disciples thought they were seeing a ghost when Jesus approached their boat walking on the surface of the sea. The Lord had to shout out that they shouldn’t be afraid because “it’s really me.” Simon Peter (the “rock”) responds “if that’s really you, Lord, command that I come to you on the water”. So Jesus tells him: “Come!” One can imagine Peter stepping carefully from the boat onto the water and he was doing pretty good until it occurred to him how strong the winds and the waves were at which he finds himself sinking and having to call out to Jesus, “Lord, save me!” Jesus stretched out his hand and rescued Peter while at the same time saying, “Oh you of little faith.” Surely we can all relate to Peter’s weak faith. Like him we forget all too often that we can endure all things but only as long as we remain close to and united with Christ who alone is our Rock and our Savior. By his power he can keep the waters of life a lot calmer than we can by worrying and fretting because of our lack of power. There are some things that can only be addressed by prayer and fasting. These days we find our peace disturbed by the seemingly crazed leader of North Korea who threatens to do harm to the United States and our Allies. And because of the concerted effort by some Americans to destabilize the present administration in Washington, a great many citizens lack confidence in our own leadership. This is a very good time for those who wish to be faithful followers of Christ to pray for our President and his advisors, and to pray for the people of Guam, South Korea, Japan, and all who have been threatened. We could also pray for the conversion of North Korea and his military advisors. Surely among those advisors are some sane individuals who don’t want to make decisions that will result in their own deaths, the deaths of their families, and the deaths of countless others. From a purely human perspective the situation looks grim. It reminds me of the 1962 Cuban missile crisis in which it seemed likely that the world was about to end. So let’s join together to pray that the Lord Jesus Christ will hear our cry: “Lord, Save Us.” Mary, Queen of Peace, Pray for us.

LITTLE FAITH

All Christians should pray regularly for all people who suffer from infirmities of every kind. But this list is intended for individuals who are acutely ill or facing surgery until they are back on the mend. Names will ordinarily be removed after 3 weeks, but if the illness persists you can call us and we will keep their names on for an additional three weeks.

THIS WEEK’S EVENTS ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED
VIRGIN MARY
Holy Day of Obligation Opportunity
Monday, August 14th 5:30pm
Tuesday, August 15th 5:30pm
The Assumption is the oldest of all the Marian feasts. It commemorates the teaching that the Mother of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.
Perfectly united with the life and saving work of Jesus, Mary shares his heavenly destiny in body and soul. St John Paul II

JESUS CHRIST IS THE ALPHA AND THE OMEGA, THE BEGINNING AND THE END
For two years now we have been inviting parishioners to journey to a deeper level of faith through a powerful
spiritual experience known as ALPHA.
What’s so special about Alpha and why are we offering it again?
We recognize that on many levels we are not reaching younger generations of Catholics and are witnessing
a major disconnect with church life, especially in terms of Mass attendance. If you are a baby boomer or
older, you will know this first-hand by considering to what extent your children or grandchildren regularly
attend Mass. In point of fact, many people who have been baptized Catholic view themselves as
having no religious affiliation. And here’s a shocking survey result: In the U.S. for every one person
who is baptized Catholic, almost SEVEN Catholics leave the Church.
How do we counter this trend ?
Alpha offers a two-pronged approach by appealing to both the churched and the un-churched. First,
for those who are reading this and regularly connect with church, Alpha can spark a deeper level of faith
and a richer personal relationship with Jesus Christ in terms of what it means to be His disciple.
Our faith can grow dormant and our church practice routine. Perhaps we sense a need for more and Alpha
might meet that need. But Alpha is also meant to reach the un-churched.
You who have found Alpha a rich opportunity to deepen faith can be the means of touching the hearts
of family members and friends and invite them to share in the Alpha experience.
By focusing on the fundamentals of the Christian faith in a welcoming, non-judgmental way, Alpha
can gently help a person take the next step in the faith journey. That step may not result in becoming a
zealous committed Catholic right away, but it can be a freely chosen step in the right direction.
By way of a shared meal, an engaging video, and group discussion there is an emphasis on the
relational aspect of faith rather than dogma in an atmosphere where any question can be asked and
every person is respected.
Are you still “on the fence” about Alpha?
Come the first night, take the leap of faith. Not only will you not crash land, will more likely find
yourself in a beautiful place of faith.
A VISION FOR US
We are called to become a
church in which all are welcome to become friends with each other, with Christ,
and with the least of His brothers and sisters;
becoming Holy as God is Holy.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 23RD AT 10:00 AM
This will be an occasion of great splendor for the Catholic Church in Oklahoma. Cardinals, Bishops, Priests, Deacons, Consecrated Religious, and lay faithful will be gathered to honor Fr. Rother as he is formally declared Blessed. Beatification is the rite that leads to canonization—once a verifiable miracle has occurred through his direct intercession. One charter bus has been reserved and tickets are being sold that cover the expense. We propose that those not going on the bus be willing to join with others by meeting in our parking lot on that Saturday morning. There are a number of parking lots and garages within walking distance of the Cox Arena.
