NINENTH ANNIVERSARY OFEPISCOPAL ORDINATION
24-08-2015
Clergy, Religious & People,Diocese of Vellore
Hearty Congratulations !
2
Dear Fathers, Brothers and Sisters,
In the month of August we celebrate three important
feasts: Feast of St. John Maria Vianney, the patron saint
for all diocesan priests that falls on 4 August; the
Solemnity of the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary,
Principle Patroness of India, that falls on 15
August which is also the feast of Assumption Cathedral,
Vellore; the ninth year completion and the beginning
of tenth year Episcopal Ordination of our beloved Bishop
Most Rev. Dr. P. Soundararaju, SDB., that is on 24
August.
St. John Maria Vianney, who is often referred to as
the “Cure d’ Ars”, is known for his notable priestly and
pastoral work. His work was notable because of the
radical spiritual transformation of the community and
its surroundings that he worked for. He was a man of
vision and mission. As a visionary, he wanted to become
a priest in order to save souls by bringing them to
God. He could achieve this through his laborious mission
of sitting at the confessional and absolving the sins of
many people, priests and bishops. Let us try to imitate
his vision and mission by committing ourselves to our
Christian faith. Let Cure d’ Ars be a source of courage
and commitment.
At this juncture, I in the name of our bishop, wish all
the priests in our diocese a HAPPY FEAST and God’s
3
abundant blessings. Also I would like to extend
appreciation and thanks to all the priests working in
our diocese for their committed service to our people.
The Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven,
according to the beliefs of the Catholic Church, was
the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary into Heaven at
the end of her earthly life. The Assumption of Our Lady
into Heaven is the foretaste of our Heavenly
birth. Because it signifies the Blessed Virgin’s passing
into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian
feasts and a Holy Day of Obligation. The Solemnity of
the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary is also the feast
of the Assumption Cathedral of our diocese. I wish the
parish priests and the parishioners of Assumption
Cathedral, Vellore all God’s choicest blessings on the
occasion of their parish feast.
Also on this day we celebrate the 68th Independence
Day of our country. As Indians, let us be proud of our
country for its rich heritage and culture and also beware
of the ruining of these riches. In this connection, I would
like to bring to our realization what Pope Francis says
about ‘...building our common home...’ in his
recent Encyclical Laudato si (praise be to you). In the
very beginning of his Encyclical he raises the basic
question, ”What kind of world do we want to leave to
those who come after us, to children who are now
growing up?” If we apply this question to us
4
Indians, perhaps we have to ask ourselves what kind of
India do we want to leave to the future children of our
country?
Pope in his Encyclical continues saying, ...It reminds
everyone that the earth, our common home “is like a sister
with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother
who opens her arms to embrace us”. People have
forgotten that “we ourselves are dust of the earth (cf. Gen
2:7); our very bodies are made up of her elements, we
breathe her air and we receive life and refreshment from
her waters.”...Now, this earth, mistreated and abused, is
lamenting, and its groans join those of all the forsaken
of the world. Pope Francis invites us to listen to them,
urging each and every one – individuals, families, local
communities, nations and the international community –
to an “ecological conversion” in the expression of Saint
John Paul II. We are invited to “change direction” by
taking on the beauty and responsibility of the task of
“caring for our common home”. He shows the ray of hope
throughout his Encyclical by giving the message that
“Humanity still has the ability to work together in
building our common home”.
We, the citizens of India, have to examine ourselves on
the 68th Independence Day of our country, how
much have we made the Mother India to cry by polluting
her water & air, ruining her rich heritage and
5
culture, enslaving her children in the name of caste,
creed, clan and language and damaging her beautiful
face of honour and dignity?. In tune with the message
of our Pope, let us join our hands to work together in
building the future India that is freed from the aforesaid
enslavement and pollution. I wish you all a HAPPY
INDEPENDANCE DAY.
On 24 August, our Bishop Most Rev. Dr.
P. Soundararaju, SDB., joyfully completes nine years
of his Episcopal Ordination and begins gloriously the
tenth year of his Episcopacy. Just as he shows his great
devotion to Our Lady, he shows his enormous love and
devotion to our diocese also by elevating our diocese
in her many faces: education, youth, social life, and
Church leadership etc.. It is a joyful occasion for all the
Priests, Religious and People of Vellore diocese to come
together with love and affection and wishes
for our Bishop, the Good Shepherd of our diocese. Let
us invoke God’s manifold blessings upon him and pray
for his good health of mind and body.
I, in the name of all the Priests, Religious and People of
Vellore diocese extend a hearty CONGRATULATIONS to
our Bishop on his ninth Episcopal Ordination
Anniversary.
