Young Singers Foundation Young Singers Foundation is alive and well in Region # 9. A display and table will be set up at the Winter Regional Meeting in the Boutique. Sweet Adelines who wish to donate $20, in memory of someone, may get an envelope, to send directly to YSF, and recognition pin at the table. Money will be collected at the show on Saturday evening. Florida Panhandle Choruses Coming in May

by Rhonda Payton, Region 9 Communications Coordinator

You may remember that as part of SAI's Harmonic Progression program, Region 23 is being dissolved; its members are moving to surrounding Regions. So in December, your Regional Manage-ment Team had a fun day in Panama City, meeting with leadership of two existing choruses that will become part of Region 9 as of May 1. The RMT and choruses got to know each other a little and educated each other on Region 9 and chorus topics.

We couldn't be happier to be gaining two energetic, fun-loving cho-ruses: Pensacola Sound Chorus from Pensacola, FL and Harmony Shores Chorus from Panama City, FL.

Pensacola Sound is "the little chorus with the big, big sound" directed by Tara Smith. See their website: http://www.pensacolasoundchorus.com.

Equally dynamic is Harmony Shores, directed by Barbara Heckerson. More information on Harmony Shores may be found here: http://www.harmonyshores.com.

We hope that some representatives from these two choruses will be in Daytona Beach with us this year at convention, to observe how Region 9 conducts our activities and competition. They won't be competing in our line-up until spring of 2014, so they'll be able to learn a little in advance how we do things around here.

If you see any ladies from Harmony Shores or Pensacola Sound, be sure to give them a big Region 9 welcome and a warm hug!

~In other words, a great big ~

O-TOWN SOUND Pat Feverston

We have been very busy at O-TOWN SOUND the last couple months of 2012. We are looking forward to a great 2013. We celebrated our ONE YEAR CHARTER ANNIVERSARY with a FAMILY PIC-NIC on November 17th at Turkey Lake Park - bring-a-dish lunch, good old fash-ioned picnic games and a picture scavenger hunt. We had such a great time that I'm sure this will become an annual event. O-TOWN SOUND is growing by leaps and bounds. Since competition last April, the chorus has 11 new members - covering 12 counties from coast to coast. Our risers now include sisters and a mother and daughter team that recently joined the chorus. Our youngest member is 16 years old. We also have two new quartets - CROSSTOWN and FROM A TO Z.

With the chorus growing, the need of additional risers has kept the chorus busy finding creative ways to raise funds. Thanks to matching donations by various businesses, the sale of gift cards from SHOP WITH SCRIP and our very successful sale of CHRISTMAS PHONE-A-GRAMS, the chorus ordered two additional sets of risers which arrived in January. We are very excited about all the news coverage the chorus has received. The SEMINOLE CHRONICLE ran an entire full page feature about our singing the CHRISTMAS PHONE-A-GRAMS - and it was a big hit - the chorus and our quartet DOUBLE TROUBLE delivered a whopping 175 cards. The LAKE SENTINEL printed a story about two new members - sisters who joined OTS a few months ago. They came from a family where barbershop singing was a part of their childhood - thanks to a talented dad who loved to sing barbershop! December was a busy month for OTS with the chorus and quartet performing at seven different Disney Resorts, several private parties and THE VILLAGES. OTS is excited to be planning their first retreat in March at Cedarkirk Camp & Conference Center in Lithia, FL - the weekend will be filled with singing, coach-ing, choreography practice, spending a weekend with our friends and working toward an excellent package for competition in May. Our manage-ment team has begun an UN-SUNG HERO-INES recogni-tion each month. We are recognizing all the women in our chorus who work tire-lessly behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly. However, sometimes, they do not get the credit they deserve! Our first honoree was Paula Barnett. CONGRATULATIONS!!

Magic of Manatee has been quite busy during the past few months. In October we had a Spaghetti Dinner as a fundraiser. We served two seatings and then entertained with songs after each seating. We also continued practicing our Christmas music for a very busy season for us. We presented our Christmas concert on December 1 to an audience of 400 and featured the Wares Creek Boys, a well-loved, local Southern Gospel quartet, and sang a few songs with a group of young ladies who are 4th and 5th graders at the school where our director, Lois Van Beek, is a 4th grade teacher. The 5th grade girls enjoyed singing with us so much on our last year's Christmas show that they wanted to come back and sing with the 4th graders and our chorus again! We have also entertained at Habitat for Humanity, a dinner at St. Armand's Lutheran Church, a local restauranteur's home party for her employees and her entire neighborhood, and at a dinner at a local country club. We had a fun time at our own Christmas party held at a fantastically decorated Christmas house on the water. Lights, decorations, and food galore! It sure is more difficult to sing with a stuffed tummy -- and we've been doing a lot of that!

Next on our agenda is to prepare for our Annual Show on February 9 at Neel Performing Arts Center in Bradenton called "A Night to Re-member.. A Comedy of Errors." The Ditchfield's "My Three Sons," former Florida Men's Barbershop Quartet Champions, and part of The Ditchfield Family Singers, are our guest performers.

Magic of Manatee is very proud to accept the award presented to us for faithfully completing 55 years of continuous service as a Member Chapter and our loyal, persevering and harmonious efforts. We recog-nize it is a significant achievement for a chapter to reach this goal of longevity in chapter life.

Happy 2013 greetings to you, Region 9! Jax Harmony bids farewell to our 50th Anniversary year, and greets this new one, so filled with possibility and potential. When Jacksonville Harmony Master Director and Sweet Adeline Icon Ann Gooch received the Lifetime Achievement Award at Denver’s International Convention, we witnessed a Legend finding her just place in history. We’re so proud of you and your accomplishments, Annie. For so many people, YOU are the face and the voice of our organization and this award fits you perfectly.

Adding to this, our Region 9 quartets and choruses again showed why our competi-tive bar is raised so high. Touche’s glorious victory was just the beginning of a Region 9 mandate. We celebrate your accomplishments, ladies!

Focusing on this year, Hawaiian breezes are bringing new members to our door! Chris Bland lead, Deb Eunpu bass, Beverly Conderman baritone, Cyndi Gibson baritone, Emily Michael baritone, Marcelle Phene tenor, Nina Robinson lead, Laurie Smith lead, Mary Sullivan lead, and Linda Wolski lead are recent members. Welcome to the risers, ladies, now let’s have a blast and Sing!!

Some of our new members have already experienced the benefits of joining Jax Harmony with a visit from SAI President and Choreography Coach Renee Porzel. Renee is always welcome here, as she imparts not only scene-stealing choreo-graphic moves, but also tips for living life better in the Sweet Adeline community.

Equally inimitable is the fabulous Jean Barford and she visited Jax Harmony re-cently. Jean sharpened our singing skills and we hope those will be evident as we entertain you at the Winter Workshop Saturday night show.

When Global Open House rolled around we took a unique approach and adver-tised in local, highly successful theatre show programs. Theatre patrons are naturally interested in the arts, and more likely to meet our target audience criteria. In return for buying space in programs, we received free tickets to performances as a bonus. Maybe this would be a successful advertising vehicle for your chorus as well.

CALLING ALL GOLFERS!!!!! Do we have a Dream Weekend for you! Chorus member Darlene Friend is engineering a golfing fundraiser for us. With kind help from her former boss Jerry, a Golf Tournament will be held on Sunday April 14 at Cimarrone Golf Club in Jacksonville. Prizes will be awarded at every hole, and heavy finger food will be provided for the players after the tournament. They are looking to sign up foursomes to play the course. Funds collected will go to Jacksonville Harmony’s Hawaii fund.

Spring weekends in April are at their most beautiful in Jacksonville so DO mark your calendars to play golf for a great cause on Sunday April 14!! For more info, contact Darlene Friend at: [email protected] or call her cell at 904-403-7416.

Now Region 9, as President Renee always says, go out there and change the world, one chord at a time.

WOMEN OF NOTE / S. FLORIDA JUBILEE Shoshana Davidowitz / Man Khoury After a very long, hot day in South Florida, with hundreds of groups and individuals, and after three rounds of auditions, two Region 9 choruses were chosen to sing the National Anthem for two nationally televised Miami Dolphins football games this season. South Florida Jubliee and the Women of Note Chorus proved our beautiful four-part a cappella harmony can be enjoyed by everyone, including NFL fans!! We thought it would be fun to hear from both choruses about their NFL experiences.

On October 14th, the Women of Note gathered at SunLife Stadium, ready to sing their hearts out! Dressed in pink chorus shirts in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the chorus walked out onto the field, marveling at the size of the stadium, taking in the thousands of fans and feeling the excitement of the day! The sun slipped behind a cloud and as we arrived at the 50-yard line, the rain began to fall. While it flattened our hair, it certainly did not dampen our spirit! The players were introduced, the pitch pipe was blown and the announcer said, “Here to sing the National Anthem, the Women of Note Chorus! Take it away ladies!” And off we went! The sun appeared from behind the clouds and the notes sailed out into the crowd. It felt like we had only been standing there a minute and then it was over. Three F18’s flew over the stadium as our last note rang. “I was proud to represent Sweet Adelines and the barbershop community on that day,” said Mitchell Greenberg, Director of the chorus. “I was also very excited for breaking into that venue, which had never seen barbershop before as far as I know. This can open the door for future opportunities with the Dolphins and other professional sports organizations. The feeling of standing on the 50-yard line and looking around at thousands of people was just breathtaking.”

South Florida Jubilee member Mari Khoury recounts her experience singing at the stadium on November 25th. “It felt like walking into a green valley with mountains of seats rising up with the teal and orange bursting on all sides. There was a flurry of activity on the field all around us. It all seemed to be chaotic confusion until we heard our name announced and we began to sing. Suddenly, everything fell into place. All of the countless hours of rehearsal came down to this moment. Here I was a new singer, a new member of the South Florida Jubilee Chorus for only a few months. When I started, all the faces were unfamiliar, but now, these were my sisters, with angelic voices that mirrored, blended and complemented my own. I was one of them, and I could not be happier.”

“This was not a mere performance. We were honored to be chosen from hundreds of candidates to sing the National Anthem at Miami Dolphins Stadium on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. The eyes of thousands were upon us and as the first few notes rose in the air, the excited crowd hushed and listened. Our voices were in perfect balance and synchronization despite poor acoustics in an open air stadium. We stood in the yellow sunshine on the green grass in bright red sequined blouses. As we hit the last notes, the crowd stood and cheered as they sang with us. It was an unfor-gettable experience, one of many I hope to have with these dedicated musicians.”

For both choruses it was truly an honor and an experience no member will ever for-get! We certainly hope to do it again next season and we were all proud to represent Sweet Adelines International and especially Region 9!

———————————————————————————- January 2013

Dear Sweet Adeline friends,

As all this aforementioned was taking place, I was working with Chelsea Young turning out a bulletin for membership when Joann Abrams asked if I would take her place publishing the “Nine On Line.” Since then, so much has changed but we have tried not to miss a beat.

Until 2005, we printed and distributed copies of Nine On Line (formerly Region 9 Party Line) to each Sweet Adeline in Region 9. It was very time consuming but even more, very rewarding, knowing that each of you got a copy and were up to date on things. Then we began furnishing Nine On Line online to a designated member of each chorus to be distributed to each member of the chorus.

I joined Sweet Adelines in 1977 as a member of the Famous Beach Chorus. It brought a new love and excitement into this busy working mother’s life and continued to be a special part of me. Last year, I became a Chapter at Large member and this year, as I celebrated a memorable birthday, I began to wonder what fine lady in the region would be especially good at publishing Nine On Line if I gave it up.

It’s been a pleasure working with the Communications Directors, currently Rhonda Peyton, and now I wish her as many years of joy, as I have had, as an active member of Region 9 Sweet Adelines. Much love,

Kitty Maiden
