• Review Constructions and building blocks

• Nets• Geometric Sequences• Circles and results

Day 1 check

Go over Day 1 homework

•Stress geometric thinking

Page 4: NIMS GEO. June 15, 2010

Big Ideas• Need to ask questions that make

students think, not just recite• Need higher levels of thinking

– In Blooms– In Van Heile

• Ask for reasons, connections, extensions, comparisons…

Page 5: NIMS GEO. June 15, 2010

Definitions• Very important• But often overdone at a low level• Teach them in context and review

as needed• Help students understand why

they are defined in certain ways• What makes an apple an apple? Is more thought provoking than“”recite the definition of an apple”

What can you learn from a notecard?

Paperfold and cutting• Fold once (hamburger ways) and cut

– Get Isosceles triangle, 2 equal sides, 1 line of symmetry

• Fold again (hot dog) and cut– Get Rhomubs, 4 equal sides, 2 lines of

symmetery

• Fold again (Taco) and cut– Get Octagon, 8 equal side, 4 lines of symmetry

Page 7: NIMS GEO. June 15, 2010

Folding Notes• In each case, there are at least that

many lines of symmetry• Cutting in the ‘right’ place could

make the isosceles triangle equilateral, the rhombus a square, etc.

• This would result in more lines of symmetry

• Determing the ‘right’ place to cut is a good challenge question
