R K Pachauri Director-General, TERI and Chairman, IPCC

Dr Rajendra K Pachauri is Director of the newly established Yale Climate and Energy Institute (YCEI) and President, TERI North America. He has been the Chairman of IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) since 2002, and Director-General of TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute). He accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 on behalf of IPCC, which shared the honour with former Vice President Al Gore. He has been conferred with several awards including ‘Padma Vibhushan’ the second highest civilian award in 2008, ‘Officier De La Légion D’Honneur’ by the Government of France in 2006, and ‘Padma Bhushan’ in 2001 for his outstanding contribution in the field of science, engineer-ing, and environment. He is actively involved in several international forums dealing with climate change policies and has been associated as faculty with academic and research institutions of national and inter-national repute. He has authored 23 books and several papers and articles.

Takashi HONGO Special Advisor and Head of Environment Finance Engineering Department, Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Japan Finance Corporation

Takashi Hongo has been helping develop new frontiers, such as carbon trading market in Japan including Carbon Credit Trading Platform, Nikkei-JBIC Carbon Price Quotation, and Market Approach Adaptation in addition to engaging in financing operations for GHG emission reduction projects. He proposed ‘Energy Efficiency Target and Environment Finance’ for promoting low carbon investment. He contributes numbers of committees and task forces in Climate Change and energy field.

Shri H.S. Brahma, is an Indian Administrative Service officer of Andhra Pradesh State cadre. He is a Post Graduate in Political Science. Shri Brahma is the present Secretary of the Ministry of Power, Government of India. He has held various senior posts in the Government of India and State Government prior to the present posting. Shri Brahma held posts such as Joint Secretary (Border Management) for more than 4 (four) years and completed almost all the border fencing and other border infrastructural work in Indo-Pak – Indo-Bangladesh border. He also worked as Special Secretary & Additional Secretary in National Disaster Management Authority (Ministry of Home Affairs). He was the Member Secretary of the State Electricity Board, Andhra Pradesh. Shri Brahma has well rounded experience in various facets of administration in different departments of Government of Andhra Pradesh and Government of India.

Hiroshi DANNO Executive Vice President and Representative Director, Mitsubishi Estate Co., Ltd

Since he joined Mitsubishi Estate Co., Ltd in 1973, Mr. Danno has been involved in the distribution and development of real estate properties. In 1999, he was appointed General Manager of the Urban Develop-ment and Real Estate Investment Promotion Department, and fostered the development of income-generating real estate properties such as office buildings, retail properties, and rented accommodations, leveraging on real estate securitization. In April 2005, he was appointed Senior Executive Officer and General Manager of the Development and Investment Department, and has been in the current position since June 2005.

Ajay Shankar Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry

Joined the IAS in 1973. He taught Political Science at Allahabad University for two years before joining Government. He has rich and varied experience in the Central and State Governments in industrial promotion, the energy sector and urban management and development. Before assuming responsibility of Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, he was Principal Adviser in the Planning Commission looking after the water, sanitation and environment and forest sectors as well as provision of rural infrastructure through the Bharat Nirman Programme. As Joint Secretary/Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Power he played a key role in preparation and enactment of the Electricity Act, 2003 and the rules and policies under the Act. He was also instrumental in promoting private sector participation in the Power Sector and was responsible for power sector reforms. As CEO, Greater NOIDA Industrial Development Authority, he was responsible for development of one of the most attractive industrial townships. He was Secretary to the Lt. Governor of Delhi for over 5 years and was also been Commissioner, Kanpur and Chairman, Kanpur Development Authority.

Ashok Ashta has traversed the globe, completing high school from London (UK), undergraduate studies at Williams College (USA) and post graduate studies from Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. An early career at Toyota in Japan exposed him to Japanese lean management and kaizen practices and a world of international marketing. After returning to India he worked several years to promote Indo-Japanese cultural and business relations and several of his articles have been carried in the national English press. In the year 1981 as an executive trainee and has since worked in different disciplines of engineering, specifically in the field of steam generators. He has also headed engineering department of NTPC in its western region head quarters. Currently he is working in NTPC as Addl. General Manager (Clean Coal Technologies) handling various climate change and low carbon technology issues.

He has over 25 years of experience in solid waste management, on-site sanitation, biogas technology, decentralized waste water treatment and financing of infrastructure projects. Presently involved with implementation and operation of solid waste management projects (doorstep collection and transportation to processing and disposal, revival and re-engineering of sick compost plants, remediation of dump-sites etc.). For the first time in India, a project for management of 500 TPD construction and demolition waste (C&D waste) has been launched in Delhi. He is on the Board of Directors of Kanak Resources Management Ltd. (collection and transportation) and Integrated Rubplas Waste Solutions Ltd. (liquid fuel from rubber and plastics). He retired from HUDCO as Chief (Projects), heading their Waste Management Cell (financing infrastructure projects). Worked as a consultant to the WHO in China (Environment Management) and to Rotary International in Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay to fight spread of cholera. He has been a member of various Expert Committees of the Government of India, e.g., ‘MSW 2000 Rule’ (MoEF), the ‘Manual on Municipal Solid Waste Management’ (MoUD), ‘Technology Advisory Group’ (TAG, MoUD), ‘Inter-Ministerial Task Force on Integrated Plant Nutrient Management using City Compost’ etc. He is also the Vice Patron, Indian Association for Solid Waste Management (IASWM), New Delhi and Life Fellow, Indian Association for Environmental Management, c/o NEERI, Nagpur.

Mili Majumdar Associate Director, Sustainable Building Science, TERI

She is an energy professional with specialization in energy efficiency and development of sustainable habitats. She has 16 years of experience in the field of energy and environment with special emphasis on sustainable habitat development. She is heading the Centre for Sustainable Building Science (CRSBS) and Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA). Additionally, she is involved in design, detailing and execution of energy efficiency measures for new and existing buildings and has experience in integration of energy efficient and renewable energy technologies in building design. She is proficient in simulation of buildings and systems. She is also responsible for business development, project management, monitoring, co-ordination and team collaboration. She is also associated in several policy initiatives to mainstream sustainable buildings in India. She has led a team to conceptualise and develop a system for rating of green buildings in India. The rating system, GRIHA addresses environmental and social concerns of building construction in India and provides a framework for development of habitats and buildings that are environmentally benign, cost effective and socially responsible.
