The company was founded on January 25, 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports by Bill Bowerman and Philip knight, and officially became Nike, Inc. in 1978.

Nike, originally known as Blue Ribbon Sports, was founded by University of Oregon.

The first shoe to carry this design that was sold to the public was a football shoe named "Nike", which was released in the summer of 1971.

By 1980, Nike had reached a 50% market share in the United States athletic shoe market, and the company went public in December of that year.
