NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowships

• Academic and clinical training • For entrants to specialty training• 25% academic research• Support in making application for training fellowship

leading to higher degree• Up to 3 years (4 for GPs)• £1000 bursaries• Structured Research Training Programme (RTP)

NIHR ACF: Eligibility and Entry

• Entry to ACFs may be at up to 4 different levels equating to • ST1, 2, 3, and/or 4 (for Psychiatry and Paediatrics)

• Open to all doctors who can meet the entry requirements for entry into specialty training at a particular level

• Open to individuals in StR and SpR posts

• Applicants may also hold a higher degree

• Specialty specific NIHR ACFs are run through posts

• Academic and clinical training (ST3 and above) for those with a higher degree

• Available to qualified GPs and GDPs• 50% academic research• Support in making application for Clinician Scientist

Award or similar• Up to 4 years• End point marked by CCT and substantial piece of

post-doctoral research.• £1000 bursaries• Generally advertised by HEIs (March-March)

NIHR Clinical Lectureships

NIHR Clinician Scientist Award

Postdoctoral award (open to StRs/SpRs/consultants)• 5 years duration• Applicants retain clinical duties appropriate for gaining

CCT• Up to 4 NHS clinical sessions a week post CCT• Pays for salary, research costs and training• Pays research assistant salary (3 years only)

Applicant:PhD/MD (or have submitted) with good output from

researchEvidence of commitment to research careerExpectation of ongoing employment at the end of award

What does a NIHR Fellowship provide?

• Research and training award to support researchers focusing on people and patient-based clinical and applied health research.

• Can be based at University (HEI) or NHS Trust/organisation• Open to any scientific discipline and clinical and non-clinical • Salary (at 100% NHS, 80% HEI)• Full Tuition fees (for PhD level)• Research costs at 100% NHS, 80% HEI. • HEI also receive specialist support and indirect costs e.g.

estates costs at 80%)• Full Training and development costs

Annual competition for all levels Launch - Autumn 2012 Closing date – January 2013
