Nightingale House has an army of volunteers who donate many hours of their time each week, playing a vital role in helping us run the Hospice, keeping our shops open to bring in much needed funds, and helping out at fundraising events.

During 2011, our volunteers dedicated over 63,500 hours. This is wonderful support from our local community. However, we do need even more support, particularly between now and Christmas, but also going into 2013.

Nightingale News, Autumn 2012 3

Once again I am delighted to welcome you to our newsletter. I would like to say a big thank you to all of our supporters, who have once again helped us to maintain our vital services to our patients and families.

We are regularly reminded of how much our services mean to the community from the many thank you cards, letters and emails we continue to receive and it really is a great boost to all who are involved here at Nightingale House and is a valuable reminder of just how much the Hospice is part of the community.

This year it will cost £2.5 million to run Nightingale House Hospice

and only 20% of this will come from statutory government sources. You may have seen an article in the local press earlier in the summer where we raised the issues of the difference in funding between English and Welsh hospices. I can assure you that we continue to lobby the Welsh Government for the financial support we need. We do rely on the generosity of you, our supporters, and local community to raise the remaining £2.2 million we need to continue to run the Hospice this year.

Throughout this newsletter, you will find information about the numerous events and activities you can be involved in as we fast approach the festive season.

We still have tickets available for our Annual Ball, which this year has a ‘Hollywood’ theme. It is always a fabulous night and a great way to start the Christmas celebrations.

In this newsletter, you will find details of our Christmas concerts, with the spectacular voices of both the Rhos and the Froncysyllte Male Voice Choirs.

Included again with this edition of the newsletter, are two books of tickets for our Bumper Christmas Cash Draw. We urge you to enter the Draw for the chance to win £5,000.

We thank everyone for their support with our summer events. Despite the weather, we have had a great show of support and you’ll be able to read more about them on page 9.

The Ladies’ Midnight Walk saw over 850 walkers turning out to support us and add their stars to the Memory Wall. Between them they pledged to raise over £80,000.

We had so many lovely comments from the individuals and families about the care that Nightingale House gives and we have included two of these for you to read.

On behalf of everyone here at Nightingale House, I thank you for your continued support and generosity and I look forward to meeting you at one of our many forthcoming events.

Photo: Wendy Ives (back left) took part in the 2012 Ladies’ Midnight Walk. Wendy said,

“I’m doing my 4th walk this year for my lovely big sis, Ingrid, who was so wonderfully cared for by the Nightingalers. So proud to be walking with my niece, her daughter— and my great-niece, her granddaughter . . . Team Ingrid! ”

Michelle Kelsall shared these lovely comments on our Facebook page.

“Me, my daughter and my Aunty are walking in memory of a wonderful Mum, Nana and Sister. This is the first time my daughter is walking it. Having reached the grand old age of 10 she is able to this year and she is bursting with excitement! Mum/Nana/Sis was so brilliantly cared for by Nightingale House and I believe that every family should be able to access the Hospice should they need it. That’s why we have to raise as much money as possible so that the Hospice can continue to offer the fantastic care and services that it does.”

4 Nightingale News, Autumn 2012

The summer of 2012 has been a time of great national celebration with the Golden Jubilee and also the Olympic Games events being held throughout the UK. The Hospice has incorporated these events into our usual routines decorating our rooms with bunting and balloons and planning activities and events for our patients and staff to join in the celebrations.

This summer has also seen us branching out into the local communities of our catchment area attending local health and well-being events with our information stand and DVD and offering taster days of some aspects of our services out in the communities that have supported us since the Hospice opened.

There are still a lot of myths and mysteries surrounding hospice care and we hope that by visiting communities, providing information

about our services and also advice and support to those people living in the community who may benefit, that we are able to dispel some of these anxieties by providing a greater insight and depth of information about our care.

We will look to extend this programme of community visits in the coming months and into next year throughout our catchment area. Look out for information in your village or even contact us and invite us along to your community centre or village hall. This gives you the opportunity to shape the services you need and also to experience those that are currently available.

Nightingale House continues to be busy at all times of the year and, although services alter and adapt over time, we still support patients and families through a range of out-patient, day unit and in-patient facilities. We are only able to continue our work because of your support and your efforts in raising the funds needed to sustain our services, in the most difficult of times. I would like to thank you for your continued

Legacies are special gifts from one generation to another.

It’s a little known fact that most charities wouldn’t survive without gifts in Wills. By remembering Nightingale House Hospice in this way, you’re helping to ensure that our good work lives on to help and support future generations of local people.

No one likes to think about making a Will and people have all sorts of reasons for not making one. They don’t have time. They don’t believe it’s important. Its not the right time. . . However, your Will is an important way of looking after the future of your family and friends.

Having an up-to-date Will is probably one of the most important things you can do to ensure your wishes will be carried out exactly as you wanted. And it’s the only way to protect the rights of your children and loved ones.

After you’ve taken care of your loved ones, you may also wish to leave a gift in your Will to a cause close to your heart and, if this is the case, please consider leaving a gift to Nightingale House.

We can assure you that every penny will support the vital work of the Hospice for future generations.

It’s all about the staff . . .Employee John Bellis, from Brother Industries (UK) Ltd, braved the weather earlier this year to take part in the Nightingale House Drag Walk and successfully raised £600 through collecting sponsorship, a staff raffle and monies match-funded by the company.

AVOX staff thought they’d try something different this year and managed to get 65 of their employees signed up to a sponsored fire walk, raising £1,405.

EADS had a fabulous time at their Annual Golf Day, raising £2,870 for Nightingale House. This was a huge team effort involving many employees from EADS and Airbus.

Nigel Whitley, Group HR Operations, EADS Personnel Services UK said,

“at EADS our aim is always to try and make a difference by going the extra mile. By supporting our chosen charity, Nightingale House Hospice, our aim is to try and make a meaningful contribution towards the funds that they require to enable them to make a difference for those who need it most”.

Corporate Fundraising

Our supporters from Barclays Chester and North Wales have been busy raising £8,360 following a corporate networking charity bingo evening, with colleagues and fellow businesses on Wednesday 25th April with comedian John Martin who had the audience in tears of laughter. The event was a great team building exercise and fantastic fundraiser. Thanks to Barclays for match-funding this event.

If your company would like to support Nightingale House Hospice, why not enter a team of staff into some of our forthcoming challenges such as the Etape Cymru, Flintshire 10k or Rudolph Run (see page 10).

If you would like advice on how to set up your own Corporate Challenge, please call the Income Generation office on 01978 314 292.

ASDA Wrexham have donated a whopping £8,200 to Nightingale House through the 5p a carrier bag scheme. As part of their dedication to working in the community, staff members Mary and Jeanette also gave a helping hand at the Ladies Midnight Walk by cooking 1000 bacon butties!

Westbridge Furniture has donated numerous items of furniture and cushions for sale in our charity shops and this year we estimate that donations of furniture and cushions will raise £3,500 for the Hospice. If you are looking for brand new designer cushions, and good quality second hand furniture please visit the Nightingale House Hospice Furniture Showroom on Rhosnesni Lane, Wrexham or call 01978 262 589 for more information.

Radio Active has been a huge support to Nightingale House Hospice over the years, and 2012 is no different. By providing radios completely FREE to our major events, such as the Ladies’ Midnight Walk, Flintshire 10k and Wrexham Food Festival. Not only does this ensure optimum security and communication controls, but also saves Nightingale House nearly £1,000 a year. Many thanks to Gareth and Mike for all of their support!

Stoneacre has once again provided a sponsored car for 2012/13 which is used by staff and volunteers and saves Nightingale House a considerable amount of money in travel costs. We are truly grateful to Michael Dolan and his team of staff for their continued support.

Michael Dolan said,

“It is a pleasure for us to support such a worthy local cause as Nightingale House Hospice. Everywhere you go, people talk so highly of the care that is offered at the Hospice and we are proud to be part of the good work that is undertaken there.”

Congratulations to Ash Tyres on their recent expansion and move to new premises on Wrexham Industrial Estate. They specialise in new tyres and part worn. All brands and sizes

including batteries and garage services. For every tyre bought during the month of October they will donate £1 to Nightingale House. Ash Tyres can be found at unit 19 Abenbury Way, Wrexham Industrial Estate, LL13 9UZ, Tel 01978 661 166

Sainsbury’s Wrexham has raised over £15,000 as part of the store’s Charity of the Year scheme for 2011/12. The money was raised with nominated bag pack dates, the 5p a bag scheme, lottery promoting days and a Spring Fashion Show.

Sainsbury’s Wrexham continues to promote the Hospice’s Lottery, and over the past year has signed up 850 members, which in itself produces another £40,000 for Nightingale House. Mike Patterson, Sainsbury’s Store Manager, said,

“It has been a pleasure working alongside and supporting Nightingale House Hospice for the last two years. Nightingale House is such a vital part of our community and it pleases us to think we are helping local patients and their families.”

So far in 2012 our Hospice Charity Shops have gone from strength to strength, and this makes a significant contribution towards the running of the Hospice and supports patient care.

Much of the increase in income has come from our recycling project. We are now able to recycle fabric and clothes that we are unable to sell, CD’s, damaged books and all those non-matching cups and saucers. However we would not be able to generate this income if it was not for your support both in visiting our shops and donating your unwanted goods.

In May of this year we started to claim Gift Aid on the furniture you donate to us. In just 5 months we have been able to claim £5,500 back from HM Revenue and Customs showing what a valuable source of income Gift Aid is.

WILL WEEK 15–19 October 2012Write your Will and help your local Hospice

Will Week

Our lives and circumstances change; we get married, divorced, move home, have children or grandchildren. Any of these ‘life changing’ situations can make us reflect on what we want to happen to our estate, and how we provide for our loved ones once we are no longer here. Writing a Will is something that so many people put off. During Will Week, which runs 15th–19th October 2012, Nightingale House has arranged for a panel of local solicitors to write a standard Will in return for a suggested donation to Nightingale House of £80 for a single and £120 for a double Will.

Wythnos Ewyllys

Mae ein bywydau ac amgylchiadau yn newid; rydym yn priodi, ysgaru, symud cartref, cael blant neu wyrion.

Gall unrhyw un o’r pethau hyn newid ein bywydau a gwneud i ni feddwl beth rydym eisio digwydd i’n ystad, a sut rydym am ddarparu ar gyfer ein hanwyliaid pan ni fyddwn ni yma bellach.

Mae ysgrifennu ewyllys yn rhywbeth y mae nifer o bobl yn ohirio,

Yn ystod Wythnos Ewyllys, 18–19 Hydref, 2012, mae Hosbis Tŷ’r Eos wedi trefnu i banel o gyfreithwyr lleol ysgrifennu Ewyllys sylfaenol, yn rhad ac am ddim yn gyfnewid am gyfraniad i Hosbis Tŷ’r Eos. (Suggested donation, £80 for a single and £120 for a double Will).

Beds Boost for Hospice Thanks to Funding from RedrowThanks to a donation of £7,700 from Flintshire based house builder Redrow’s national charity we have been able to buy 3 much needed new beds.

Sandy McBride, managing director of Ewloe-based Redrow Homes (NW) visited the Hospice in June to see firsthand how the money will be spent.

Sandy said: “It was very humbling to visit the Hospice and see the outstanding levels of care and support offered to patients and their families. Nightingale House provides invaluable support to the communities of North East Wales and we are delighted to be able to donate enough money so three more specialist beds can be purchased to help keep patients comfortable.”

The donation was made during Nightingale House’s ‘Go Yellow’ campaign in June, part of National Hospice Awareness Month.

Bag Packers Needed

Bag packing is a simple but effective way of raising money for the Hospice. Last year we raised £20,000 just from packing shopping bags. For 2012 Nightingale House Hospice is privileged to be the charity of choice for the Tesco Wrexham Christmas Bag Packing Bonanza, which is taking place over the weekend of Friday 14th, Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th of December in the Tesco Extra store on Crescent Road Wrexham.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!If you could offer just 2 hours of your time between 10am and 7pm on each of these days, you could help us to raise enough money to fund the Hospice for a further day. Sounds easy doesn’t it? To book your slot, please call Val Connelly on 01978 316800 or email [email protected]

Wrexham Food & Drink Festival May 2012Nightingale House Hospice were thrilled with the success of Wrexham Food Festival this year and the new working partnership with Wrexham County Borough Council and Northern Marches Cymru. The weekend was blessed with good weather and well attended by the local community. The event has raised over £3,500 this year and promises to grow year on year into the future.

Summer FairJune 2012This year unfortunately we have not been blessed with great weather and our Summer Fair & It’s a Knockout 2012 took place on a very changeable and overcast day. Despite this, the event was still well supported by the local community and raised £5,500 for the Hospice. Thanks to all the volunteers and stallholders who made this event possible, North Wales Fire & Rescue, Radio Active and Wrexham County Borough Council.

Ladies’ Midnight Walk June 2012Thank you to all of our wonderful ladies who took part in the 6th Ladies’ Midnight Walk. The shortened 10k route has proven to be a huge success and over 850 ladies would agree! So far, the Hospice has received over £50,000 with another £30,000 to come in from monies pledged on the night, so if you haven’t managed to send back your sponsor monies as yet, please do so ASAP so that we can start using these vital funds for patient care.

Go Yellow All of June 2012 A huge congratulations goes out to everybody who participated in this year’s Hospice Awareness campaign for June 2012. Between yellow bingo, tea dances, quiz nights, zumba classes, midday mile events and yellow dress down days, you have raised an astonishing £15,500. We would like to give a special mention to all of our fantastic supporting schools who sold flashing chicks and caterpillars throughout June raising over £5,000.

Wrexham Golf DayJune 2012The 20th Anniversary Wrexham Golf Day was a successful event once again. The sun managed to appear for most of the day, helping 51 teams to raise over £4,446. A very big thank you to Anne and Selwyn Roberts who are members at the Wrexham Golf Club and have been giving up their time for the last eleven years to continue the tradition of the Wrexham Golf Day.

Past EventsMany thanks to everyone who has supported our events so far this year. Here is a summary of what we’ve been up to so far.
