GENERAL BUSINESS

1. Royal Darwin Show

There are still vacancies for the Raffle Selling roster. Please sign up. Entry passes are available for those

volunteering.

Any donations for the raffle would be appreciated.

Paul Steward [very sensibly] asked what was to happen to monies taken in excess of overall costs and

suggested that it be kept towards next year’s entry fees. There was general agreement from members.

As usual, there is concern over a possible lack of entries for the Show, so if members have suitable orchids,

please enter them. Entry forms are now available.

Display. Kerryn is again taking on the Display production. Please help her by bringing orchids along that are

not quite right for competition on Wednesday afternoon.

2. Tropical Garden Show

Entry to this is free for exhibitors as long as two public talks are given over the weekend. Booking needs to

take place soon. There is only 1 more meeting before this event so it is important to fill in a roster at this

time as well as any Display. Anthony agreed to organise the raffle.

3. AOB

Following a suggestion by Wendy, flowers will be sent to Di Dowling following the passing of her

husband. A card has already been sent.

General discussion regarding raffle contents. Obtaining Vouchers from

companies/businesses to be encouraged. Marion to update letters requesting

assistance.

There will be major problems obtaining donations from politicians so it is essential that

be orchids.

Royal Darwin Show Raffle

The very happy winner [Colin and Chris Roe] of the Raffle held jointly by

members of Nightcliff Orchid Society and Litchfield Orchid Club.

The raffle was highly successful and raised sufficient money [after costs]

to pay all the entry fees and leave a nest egg for next year.

Huge thanks to all those who worked and/or contributed raffle prizes.

NIGHTCLIFF ORCHID SOCIETY – SPRING SHOW 2016

It is always difficult to predict what orchids will flower and at what time. Although it

is almost impossible to confidently assume that any particular orchid will flower in

September, the Spring Show traditionally has a major focus on 2 orchid areas: soft

cane Dendrobiums and species in general.

Soft cane Dendrobiums, both species and hybrids, typically come into bud following a

cool and dry spell [such as the Dry Season] so it will be interesting to see exactly what

will flower this year as the Dry Season has been quite wet and somewhat hot. The

following Dendrobiums are likely to be present at the Spring Show.

Dendrobium nobile Dendrobium aphyllum

Dendrobium Merlin-Flake

Dendrobium Gatton Sunray Dendrobium pulchellum

Dendrobium Hamana Lake x Hambuhren Gold Dendrobium Golden Aya

Many [but not all] orchid species also burst into growth [and flower] as the warmer,

more humid conditions arrive.

Acampe papillosa

This member of the

Vandeae is a small plant

with short inflorescences

bearing clusters of small,

attractive flowers that

appear during

September/October in

Darwin

Page 10: NIGHTCLIFF ORCHID SOCIETY Volume 40 Issue Number 8 AUGUST 2016 · 2020-04-30 · NIGHTCLIFF ORCHID SOCIETY EVENTS FOR 2016 AUGUST 2016 General meeting Monday 8th Committee meeting

10 | P a g e

Two genera in particular flower well for the Spring Show: Coelogyne and Gongora. Each

genus is well worth growing, but check before buying a particular plant that it will enjoy

Darwin. Some species and hybrids are cool growers.

Coelogyne virescens

Coelogyne viscosa

Coelogyne flaccida

Unusually, this

Coelogyne has

upright inflorescences

with flowers that are

predominantly green

in colour.

These flowers are fairly

typical of many of the

Coelogynes that grow

well in Darwin:

predominantly white

with yellow or brown

markings.

This Coelogyne is often

cited as a cool grower

yet it flowers reliably in

Darwin during the build

up

11 | P a g e

Plants of the genus Gongora have pendulous inflorescences so it is important to plant

your orchid in a container that can hang: baskets are ideal but pots are also suitable.

Gongoras can be challenging to grow, but once they are ‘happy’ with their growing

conditions they can become specimen plants.

Gongora galeata. This species is often said not to flower in the Top End

Gongora histrionica Gongora bufonia

Individual flowers of

Gongoras are unusual

but beautiful when

examined in detail

SPRING SHOW ORCHID PREPARATION

This will be the last magazine before the

Spring Show so it is time to think about

preparing your orchids. All the same

information as for the Spectacular applies:

stake them early [eg. NOW!!!],

treat with a suitable pesticide and/or

fungicide,

consider bringing more delicate buds

into a protected area to prevent

flowers from being damaged by water,

sun or grasshoppers.

Remember there will be

NO SEPTEMBER MAGAZINE

as the Spring Show

programme will be

produced instead.

TROPICAL GARDEN FAIR

This month’s Social Event is another

chance to “Get Together” at the

Tropical Garden Fair at the Botanical

Gardens

This event is free to attend and NOS

will have a stall for fund raising and

to raise awareness of our club and

orchid growing in the Top End.

As usual, volunteers are needed to

man the stall and to provide

donations for the raffle.

Dates: Saturday 13th

August and

Sunday 14th

August.
