Singapore was the site of a Malay fishing village at the mouth of the Singapore River. In the 11th century A.D, Prince Sang Nila Utama first landed on Singapore's shores, he sighted a mystical beast which he later learnt was a lion. The Prince then decided to name the island "Singapura" which in Sanskrit means Lion (Singa) City (Pura). The fish tail of the Merlion symbolises the ancient city of Temasek and represents Singapore's humble beginnings as a fishing village.

In 1819 the, Sir Stamford Raffles of British East India Company established a trading post on the island, which was used thereafter as a strategic trading post along the Spice route. Singapore would become one of the most important commercial and military centres of the British Empire, and the hub of British power in Southeast Asia.

Singapore joined the Malaysian Federation in 1963 but separated two years later and became independent.
