    she walked briskly along with her expensive white yukata (light summerkimono) tucked up and her hat in one hand. O-Yae stumbled and stoppedand, standing alone, she groaned and retrieved some medicine from herpurse which was tucked in her obi (sash). Later on in the sameneighbourhood O-Yae had her bottom extensively squeezed and groped.Oyae took some of her medicine from inside a tin and popped it into hermouth to suck on whilst soaking her hand towel in a nearby stream just wherethe fast flowing stream narrowed feeling radiant and quite sociable Little bylittle opportunities presented themselves for her to socialise with others. She

    gave her heartfelt thanks for the opportunity to assuage her need forrefreshment and recuperation. Until then Oyae had felt that she had beenexisting in some sort of living Buddhist hell. Along with the other women whowere alone they drank a toast to acknowledge their debt of reciprocalgratitude to each other for banding together, their kindred souls sympathetic intheir concern for each other; glad for this pleasant and agreeablecompanionship which was certainly an exceedingly wonderful tonic.     appreciated the tonic at the local community baths their easy goingpropensity for changing old boyfriends for new ones in public raisedeyebrows. For O-Yae it was time for her to dry her hidden tears over hersense of emptiness at not having had a companion, though knowing that eachcould cause more new and embarrassing pangs. She was thankful at havingarrived and got settled and, looking around at some of the ungrateful men andwomen around her, knowing that the other women were completelyunderstanding about her lonely journey and a bit about her circumstanceswhich, quite frankly, she found difficult to talk about, expressing her sorrow

    moved by the kindness she had found especially considering how things hadbeen at the beginning. She listened, quite frankly astonished, as she was toldconfidentially by the chief employee of Matsuzaka-ya(1) dry goods store, fromwhere kimono materials were sold and which was located in Edos Hongokuch(2), that her father had died. At around that time she found accommodation

    in Nipponbashi(3) setting up home in an area, she was told, was these days acentre for weaving. In the circumstances it was understood that for anunmarried young woman to stay in the area it would be difficult to findcompanionship and to carry on alone. Then, each morning, whilst inYamanaka(4), she felt weak and yet at the same time intoxicated by the chillbreeze. Evening dew gathered on both her clothing and also made her handswet(5),though having left her old circumstances behind she was neverthelessable to dry them. As it was, unfriendly, pathetic and slanderous rumours abouther circumstances, circulated by the local neighbourhood rabble, slowlybegan to reach her ears. Later on she politely returned the favour, though inoverdoing it a bit she certainly felt encouraged to head for Hodogaya(6)

    with some company to follow. At the time Kakutar had put back his journeyto the health resort of Hakone enduing the lingering summer heat in thecapitals headland area of Kamakura. He was sad knowing that his journey tothe hot springs had been deferred though with a couple of friends they spentthe time without a care, making merry and laughing over many days. Alreadythey had begun to dress for the autumn breeze which had sprung up wherehe had been long in staying. About half way through August the buying ofsouvenirs and other various articles was arranged and using the SumidaRivers Ushima(1) ferry(2) someone was sent to the Kme villa. In thecircumstances, and feeling nothing but sympathetic to, and taking the

    measure of, this floating world (ukiyo) Kakutar had developed a propensityfor collecting. The servant took away many bundles of things, whilst cleaning

    and sweeping and maintaining the shrubs in the garden and all such mannerof things proved to be a divine blessing. On occasions, for one reason oranother, visitors came and, as it can be trusted to, life improved. So as not tohave to worry a personal woman with minimal skills had been employed to runerrands, look after meals and such. To look after the house, his principle

    residence, which was in a very insecure location in Honmachi, whilst he wasaway he had for many years employed a sufficiently spirited and virtuousforty-two forty three year old house sitter by the name of Oyoshi, which heconsidered money well spent. That morning Kakutar woke up and rose fromhis bed late and, passing underneath the rafters which led to and through avery small space, like the eye of a needle, which led to the garden thelandscaping of which followed the bank of the river stretching far enough thatthe adjacent villa could be seen. Though it looked as though the neighbourshouse was vacant, a suspicious faced Oyoshi called round to see whetherthere was to be a change to the residents and if a house move was underway. In enquiring, and much to her approval, Oyoshi discovered that the

    house was tastefully furnished, though she couldnt quite determine howexpensive the furnishings might have been, and that at around this time inparticular it was inhabited by a particular Daimys(3) honourable mistress,amongst other things known as Miss Okinu if Im not mistaken and that

    importantly the feudal lord had gone away into honourable retirement,though amongst other things, it had been heard that he had bought thisTamaya villa(1). The honourable mistress, who had been met for a short whilethe previous evening, was exceedingly beautiful. The teacher, andMamehachi, who was already present, most certainly gave his opinion

    speaking at some length and from beginning to end earnestly and politelyrequesting as well that, in this personal matter, to please, please, please learnfrom experience and that from the beginning the so called unmarried woman,who had previously been entrusted with the house in the absence of itshonourable master, was following his personal orders. Travelling back andforth to and from Edo the honourable lord and masters straw sandals hadbeen sown(2). The young woman, who was fourteen at the time, had lost herfather, the respected boss at Hongoku chs dry goods store Matsuzakaya,and, at another store, her mother was now a young, and in spite of thecircumstances, apparently spirited widower. Society gossip on the other handwas annoyingly sharp tongued however hardworking her fathers occupation

    had been. Whats more she was now a registered, progressing and suitablyfulfilled proprietess in her own right

    dealing with one of the merchant shops whilst the master was away and inparticular a head clerk, a man by the name of Yahee who, because he signedhis wifes name, she regarded with some suspicion. Her personal dealingswith others determined whether or not she had any free time. She hadpatiently tried to build up a good rapport, in a manner of speaking, withYahee, who must have been about forty years old and whose outwardappearance was judged lecherous. For the time being she had bluntlydeclined offers of financial interest (money lending) for which he held agrudge, and as he was suspected of being a cheat, wasnt spoken to unlessthere was some sort of event or entertainment going on. The shop bosss wifecame over one day good-humouredly asking for preference tempting with,ironically, the charming atmosphere at Yahees place. She went on to sayjokingly that somebody, even just for a while, would like to be friendly and that

    as a young unmarried woman she was being forcibly separated from the bosswho had fallen in love and would like her to surrender to the yearning he feltfor her every morning and every evening. It was a fact that a decision wasmade, certainly to chat to the mother, and to try to call on the father but theattempt was an embarrassing failure as they both considered her conductchildishly loutish. Additionally they disliked the reputation of the honour ofcommunity she was from caring only that, without possessions, this floatingworld (ukiyo) could only be endured if she lived her life taking care of hervirginity. She had dreamt troublingly, seemingly too often only temporarilyconcerned and more than she should have, of being past the nuisancewavering to and fro before finally leaving the problem behind.     recommended that when the early summer rain had partially cleared away themother, at intervals, should take the open air accompanied by a couple of

    woman servants, and travel to Izus Atama(1) for more than two months to takethe hot spring cure and recuperate her health. Up in the hills on a sidestreet at Hodogaya juku(3), her bewildered husband certainly knew that somemischief was under way. Clearly that evening it was a time for the crows (4).Once again there was no peace of mind whilst hanging around the road. Atthe post station headquarters the apprentice Shirkichi(5) and niece, Okichi,

    appeared at the same time, on their way to returning home to look aftervarious siblings. A great debt of gratitude was felt knowing of the extensiveexample exhibited by this junior girls concerns that instead she would returnto the residence to prepare for his return. Obliviously leaving the place theytravelled, searching the highway, with some companions to try and locate thewoman. In the street at the rear of a Kanagawa post station house at Noge(6)an exceptionally close friend had waited leaving with them as an escort toShibahama(7) for the next available steam boat
