Upcoming: the cultural future of Judaism and the new deal between Jews around the globe.

Is Judaism as we know it a thing of the past, or are we on the cusp of a great new era? Is the love-affair

between American Jewry and Israel a thing of the past, or are we on the verge of a new chapter in which

we will finally become full partners? Is the relationship with Israel a vital part of Jewish American

identity, or is that too a thing of the past? What will it take for Judaism and Jewishness to overcome the

identity-slump we are experiencing and become a vital force that will sustain not just the Jews, but the

entire world?

Ruby Namdar is an Israeli-American author born and raised in Jerusalem to a family of

2013) won the Sapir Prize, Israel’s most prestigious literary award. The English edition

of The Ruined House (translated by Hillel Halkin) was published in the US by Harper

Collins in November 2017. The French edition of the novel (translated by Sarah Tardy)

was published in September 2018 by Belfond, and was nominated for the Prix du

➢ Presentation: “Becoming a Leader and Removal from Office”: Why Don’t Transitional Leaders

Make it to the End?” Is Moses’s story, a story of success, or of failure, as a leader? In this

session, we will explore key moments in the story of Moses becoming a leader and then losing his

job before the goal has been reached. The story of Rabban Gamliel, the Moses figure of the

transition to Rabbinic Judaism also ended in tragedy. Why is this the story we tell about our

leaders? What is it’s message for us?

and communal Jewish music. As a faculty member of Hadar’s Rising Song

Institute, Deborah serves as a resource to those seeking to cultivate the

grassroots musical and spiritual creativity of the Jewish people. In addition to

composing new Jewish music, Deborah can be found as a rabbinic fellow at

➢ Presentation: “Misinai Melodies: The Surprising Origins of our Most Iconic Melodies”. Many of

our most iconic melodies have come to be known as "Misinai"- a revelation directly from Sinai

itself, passed down l’dor v’dor, from generation to generation. And yet, many of these melodies

actually have quite recent - and often strange and surprising- origins. We’ll explore some of

these tunes, asking the question: how does the communal ownership and transmission of a

melody affect its status? How does this affect our own relationship to the songs we sing?

new moon about feminism and Jewish time in a newsletter called in loving faith. She weaves prayer

rugs, teaches embodied Jewish spiritual practices with Moishe House and At The Well, sings, dances and

writes about God.

➢ Presentation: “Prostrations: On Embodied Jewish Prayer”. We might think of prayer as relating

to words and reciting liturgy from a prayer book. Yet Jewish tradition teaches us that when we

pray, we should involve the entire body. Come learn about the ancient practice of prostrations -

the act of bending and bowing during prayers, and movement as a form of spiritual connection

Rabbi Laurie Matzkin (English) is the founder of Makom Yoga, linking mindful
