creative productivity and general well being.

    Zuma Rock

The Zuma Rock is the symbol of Abuja, or even Nigeria. The big rock is depicted

on the country's 100 naira bill. However, it is not located in Abuja. It is actually

found in the state of Niger north of Abuja, along the highway from Abuja to

Kanuda. At 725 meters tall and around 3.1 km in circumference, the monolith

looks more like a small mountain. Keen observers say they can recognize a

person's face on the rock, and locals believe that due to the human face, the rock

has mysterious powers. It is said that a couple of years ago, the tourism

authorities in Niger state invited foreign investors to develop this area into a

tourist attraction. They built a fine hotel near the rock, but unfortunately the

business didn't perform as well as they had hoped. After rumors circulated that

there killings occurred in the hotel, the hotel was finally closed. Local people say

it was the negative influence of the rock that doomed the hotel.

    E. Conclusion

    I. Countrys Productivity

We can classify Nigeria as one of the poorest country around the world.

Nigeria has a GDP per capita of $2,800, a life expectancy of 52 years, and a

literacy rate of 61.3%. These three (3) data shows the standard of living in

Nigeria. Having a low GDP per capita or a citizen of Nigeria could spend in one

day, and a short life expectancy, and low literacy rate. We can conclude that

living in Nigeria is not that easy. So maybe you are wondering, why Nigeria is one

of the poorest countries in the world? And that question can be answered by

using of what we called 4 wheels of productivity namely: physical capital, human

capital, natural resources and technological knowledge.

Lets first tackle about human capital; Nigeria is the most populous country

in Africa with a total population of 174,507,539. Indeed, they have a huge

population. Can we say that they have a productive human capital? The answer

is NO. It depends if the human capital is healthy and literate because if they are

not they are not also productive. 43.8% of Nigerias population serves as a form

of investment on the part of the government because 0-14 years old are the next

generation. And that could be a source of labor force in the future. This is a form

  • 7/27/2019 nigeria ( country analysis )

    15/17

of investment because if the government will provide benefit or assistance in this

age bracket of population in the succeeding years when this population became

literate and capable to work they will able to generate income and contribute in

their countrys GDP. On the other hand, 53.2% of Nigerias total populations are

the labor force that is contributing on their GDP. While the remaining 3% of their

population are the 65 and over, these population is a consumption on the part of

the government because this portion of their population is receiving benefits and

assistance even though they are not any more productive or not capable of

generating income. They also have a rapid population growth rate of 2.54% it

means that Nigeria can increase its population rapidly. They also have a low life

expectancy of 52 years apparently they suffered from HIV/ AIDS and malnutrition.

They also have lack health assistance because only 5.1% of their GDP is allotted

for health expenditures. Their countrys literacy rate is 61.3% it is a low

percentage if compared to other country that has 99% of literacy rate. And

according to my sources government of Nigeria do not have any educational

expenditure. 70% of their population is below poverty line this shows that a huge

population is poor. Poverty is one of the factors why citizen in Nigeria is

    malnourish and illiterate.

Next is the physical capital, Nigeria has a foreign direct investment of a

total of .33% of their GDP. It depicts a huge percentage for other country to invest

in Nigeria. Why is that so? It is because Nigeria has natural resources such as

petroleum and natural gas. These two natural resources are very in demand for

other who suffers scarcity in petroleum and natural gas. Nigeria have a 33 per

100,000 person crime ratio and Nigeria also implemented death penalty. By

these data, investors are more attracted to invest in their country because of

  • 7/27/2019 nigeria ( country analysis )

    16/17

business confidence. In roadways, only 15% of their roadways are already

paved. They also have 54 airports in Nigeria. Transportation of goods and

services are really important, the faster the goods and services are transferred to

one place to another place the more productive they are. In this case, Nigerias

physical capital is not that productive.

Lets tackle about natural resources, Nigeria are rich in natural resources

such as natural gas, petroleum, tin, iron, ore, coal, limestone, lead, zinc, and

arable land. We all know that these two natural resources are both expensive and

yet in demand to other country around the world. They also have access to salt

water and can be source of fish or any other resources we can get in salt water

because they are located in the bordering of gulf of guinea. Unfortunately, they

suffered in some serious damage on their natural resources because of oil spills

and oil population that also affect the health of all its citizen of Nigeria,

Lastly, technological knowledge is far different from human capital

because it is about the processes and techniques that will help us to produce a

goods and services. Nigeria has a total of 25% of its population that is a internet

user. They also have 15% and 85% are paved and unpaved roadways. It shows

that technological advancement and transferring of goods and services in this

    country is very slow.

II. Countrys Advantages and Disadvantages compare to Philippines

One of the advantages of Nigeria in our country is their natural resources

which is natural gas and petroleum. These two natural resources are expensive

when exported in other country. But this advantage can be also their

disadvantage because of these natural resources their natural resources suffer in

oil spills that destroy there countrys natural resources.

  • 7/27/2019 nigeria ( country analysis )

    17/17

    III. Countrys Potential

Nigeria since Nigeria is on of the most populous has a potential to be a Labor

intensive country because I notice that 43.68% of its population is composed of

children or from 0 14 years old but it depends on the government on how they

train this persons to be an source of labor in their country. I also see the countrys

potential to be one of the exporters because the exchange rate of this country is

lower than other country. With the exchange rate of .0062 naira is equal to 1 US

dollars, so the other prosperous country can be attracted in buying their goods

because it looks like it is cheaper than their own product. Nigeria can also be a

technological advanced country because they have a lot of natural resources in

their country to use in experiments, research and development of their

    technology.

    F. Recommendation
