INTRODUCTIONWelcome to the Nielsen Music Mid-Year Report, which provides the definitive figures and charts for the Canadian music industry from the first six months of the year.

It’s a milestone year for Canada as the nation marked its 150 Anniversary on July 1st. Nielsen paid tribute by releasing the Top Canadian Artists, Albums and Songs from the Nielsen Music Canada Era, with Celine Dion being celebrated as the biggest selling artist. Canadian artists and the industry once again came together for the annual Juno Awards, with our nation’s capital Ottawa playing host in March as we celebrated the continued success of Canadian artists at home and around the world.

It’s been an action-packed first half of the year, with records broken and chart history made. A significant streaming milestone was also reached in April, when weekly on-demand audio streaming surpassed 700 million. As an indication of how established streaming has become, Drake’s More Life set a record for audio on-demand streams in one week, with 42.8 million, surpassing the record previously held by fellow Canadian The Weeknd.

Ed Sheeran’s “Shape Of You” dominated the No. 1 positions for a number of metrics during the first half of the year. The song has already picked up 127 million overall on-demand streams, far surpassing the top streaming song for all of 2016, The Chainsmokers “Closer” (83.4 million). Taylor Swift’s June decision to release her entire catalogue on all the major streaming platforms only underlines the huge shifts we’re seeing in how music is consumed, and the technological revolution the entire music industry is experiencing.

Rap and R&B continued to dominate in the first half of 2017, with artists like Drake, The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar and Future scoring big success. The Children’s genre saw a large uptick in overall consumption thanks to blockbuster movie soundtracks Moana and Beauty and the Beast.

Across the industry, we’re seeing artists, labels and managers strengthen connections with fans, through innovative use of social or other media platforms. This has opened up more opportunities for artists to engage and think globally to drive direct connections with fans.

Nielsen Music prides itself on truly understanding music fans – what they’re listening to, how they’re behaving and how they’re changing – and we’d be delighted to hear from you as you’re shaping the future of the industry over the months ahead. Many thanks for downloading.

‘MORE LIFE’ SHATTERS RECORDS Drake’s More Life set a record for audio on- demand streams in one week, with 42.8 million. It surpassed the record previously held by another Canadian superstar, The Weeknd, who recorded 26.7 million streams for Starboy in December 2016.

HIGHLIGHTS

MID-YE AR 2017

“DESPACITO”“Despacito,” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber (re-released as a remix with Bieber in April) picked up 8.3 million streams during the week ending June 1st, making it the most-streamed song for a one-week period since Nielsen Music began tracking streaming in 2014.

TAYLOR SWIF TTaylor Swift saw her audio on-demand streaming totals rise by 337% for the week ending June 15th, after she released her catalogue on all the major streaming platforms for the first time since 2014. Her albums 1989 and Red both re-entered the Billboard Canadian Albums chart.

FUTURE FOCUSFuture became the first artist in the Nielsen Music era (post-1996) to have different albums hit number one on the Billboard Canadian Albums Chart in successive weeks, with his self-titled album and Hndrxx.

LARGEST AUDIO STREAMING INCREASES VS. 2016

SUPER BOWL SALES SPIKELady Gaga was the headline act at February’s Super Bowl in Houston and, like many of the superstars who have performed during halftime in previous years, she enjoyed a significant uplift in sales as a result - compared to the previous week, she saw an increase (with TEA and SEA*) of 519%. Her October 2016 album, Joanne, went from 54 to 2 on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart the week after her performance, with a 524% consumption increase. The halftime show at Super Bowl LII, in Minneapolis next February, is understandably one of music’s most coveted slots.

Songs from big soundtracks led to the large increase in the Children’s genre with four songs posting over five million streams so far this year, compared to just one during the first six months of 2016. The biggest driver has been Alessia Cara’s “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana. The huge success of Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” drove the World increase, while major contributions from Hip-Hop artists Drake, The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar and Future led to the Rap and R&B gains.

ON-DEMAND STREAMS

Weekly on-demand audio streams surpassed the 700 million mark for the first time during the week ending April 6th, reaching a plateau of 755 million during the week ending June 22nd.

Albums with TEA and SEA on-demand audio are up 14% over the same period in 2016, thanks to an 87% year-over-year increase in audio on-demand streaming numbers to 17.5 billion. This helps to compensate for the 17% decrease in album sales and 20% decrease in digital track sales.

ED SHEERANEd Sheeran’s “Shape of You” dominated the number one position across a number of metrics during the first half of 2017. The song has already picked up 127 million overall streams, far surpassing the top-streaming song for all of 2016, “Closer” by The Chainsmokers (83.4 million). In addition, the song picked up 376,000 digital song downloads, beating the top-selling downloaded song for all of 2016, Sia’s “Cheap Thrills.”

“Shape” also spent 16 weeks at number one on the Streaming Songs chart and 15 weeks at the top of the All-Format Airplay chart, while Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) album has sold over 129,000 copies, making it the top-selling album for the first six months of the year and the only album to sell over 100,000 units.

MUSIC DISCOVERY: RADIO REIGNS

2017 Chuck Berry (1926-2017) In the week after his death, album sales increased from 35 the previous week to 1,000, and his audio on-demand stream total went from 94,000 to 1.2 million.

Chris Cornell (1964-2017) The two weeks after his death saw Soundgarden on-demand streaming rise by 960% and that of Audioslave

go up by 727%. Temple of the Dog on-demand streaming rose by 713%, while his solo work increased by 2,093%. Total album sales for his entire solo and group catalogue went from fewer than 200 units to 5,000.

Gregg Allman (1947-2017) Allman Brothers Band album sales (with TEA and SEA) rose by 496% in the week after his death.

AIRPL AYHigh Valley and the James Barker Band both scored their first number one songs on the Country Airplay chart. They are the first two Canadian country groups to reach No. 1 at the format in the Nielsen Music era (post-1995).

SOUNDTR ACKS2017 is shaping up to be a great year for soundtracks, with six in the top 25 best-selling albums of the first half of the year. The Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 is currently No. 9 while the soundtrack to the first film in the series is at No. 10. The Moana soundtrack is at No. 11 and the Trolls soundtrack lands at No. 13, led by the inclusion of Justin Timberlake’s big hit “Can’t Stop The Feeling.” Source: Canada Music 360 2017
