CHAIRMAN’S CHAT – JANUARY 2010

So I go away to visit my folks for the weekend and come back to find out I'm Chairman of Grampian Orienteering Club - that'll teach me to miss an AGM!

(Semi)-seriously, I'm slightly daunted by taking on the stewardship of our club, not least by the requirement to produce the Chairman's Chat every couple of months but I'm reassured that I'm starting with the club in, I think, a pretty healthy state.

That we are seeing increasing membership, a very full event calendar and that we have a very significant contribution to the success of Scottish Orienteering is due, in a large part, to the hard work of Anne Hickling, the out-going Chairman and the rest of the club members who put in many, many hours of work to support the events we put on. Thank you, Anne; I'd like to say you deserve a good rest but given that you've agreed to take on the Fixtures and Officials Coordination role, I'm afraid total relaxation isn't on the agenda just yet!

I'm really pleased to see a number of club members taking on roles as committee members or officials for the first time; I think it is important that we try to involve as many people as possible in the running of the club both to help integrate new members but also to relieve the pressure on those currently doing the vital, behind-the-scenes work that leads to success. That said, there are a couple of important roles vacant at present not least Social Coordinator, so if you feel like giving a bit of your time, we'll never turn down an offer to help.

Fingers crossed that our first major event of the year, at Crathes on 24th January, doesn't fall foul of the weather. I've spent a couple of glorious afternoons out there planning recently; one the joys of our sport are times like this when you really appreciate the effort of getting outdoors when it's so tempting to just shut the curtains and hibernate!

Pete

For those of you who missed the AGM, Pete was awarded the Chairman’s Quaich for 2009, partly as a thankyou from Anne for finally getting her off the hook(!) but also in recognition that he stepped in on numerous occasions last year to bail out events by acting as Controller or co-Planner at short notice whilst simultaneously juggling the full Fixtures workload alone.

IMPROVE YOUR ORIENTEERING IN 2010 with the Gramp Coaching Team

Thank you to all those who completed the coaching questionnaire last year. Based on your responses the Gramp coaching team have designed the following programme for the 2010:

• 4 Training events: with the format of short, standalone exercises each with a training element. There will also be the option of an all controls/score course and one 'normal course'. Coaches will be on hand to advise/shadow/debrief where necessary.

o Sunday 7th March: Location TBAo A Sunday in July (TBA)o A Saturday in August (TBA)o Sunday 14th November: Location TBA

• 1 coaching weekend to be organised in conjunction with a SOL – either September 25th/26th (SOL 6) or October 30th/31st (SOL 7). Training available on the Saturday, accommodation organised and club social on Saturday evening and event on Sunday.

• RouteGadget to be used as a coaching aid:

◦ WHAT IS ROUTEGADGET? An online utility allowing competitors to draw and compare orienteering routes. It not only shows the routes, it allows the race to be replayed, even simulating a mass start. You will actually see little squares move across the map. It really adds another dimension to post-race analysis.

◦ HOW CAN IT BE USED AS A COACHING AID? Coaches (or training buddies) can look at your performance and route choices and provide feedback and advice. You can also look at other people’s route choices and compare where you went and where you may have lost time.

◦ DO YOU WANT TO BENEFIT? Email Kate Robertson (kepenny @googlemail.com). Kate will then pair you up with a training buddy. Pairs are then free to organise their own coaching and feedback conversations/emails using RouteGadget to aid discussions.

• N.B: It is not intended to offer coaching exercise at summer series events in 2010 unless experienced planners wish to incorporate it into their planning (in which case they should seek advice from coaches beforehand). There will still be coaches on hand at summer series events to help newcomers.

IN MEMORY OF NEIL LEWIS, 15/04/1945 – 05/11/2009

Neil Lewis and his wife Unni, with youngsters Keirin, Bjorn and Kristin, were energetic and enthusiastic members of Grampian Orienteers between 1982 and 1985 when Neil was transferred from Norway to Scotland by the oil company for which he was working. Neil and the family installed themselves in Smiddy Cottage in Whiteford, near Pitcaple, and Neil promptly began to knock a wall down. Are you getting an idea of the kind of man he was? Coincidentally, after Unni, Neil and family returned to New Zealand, Guy Bromby bought the house!

Grampian Orienteers soon got used to NZ jargon: gardens were paddocks and courses were set and not planned. In the short time that Unni and Neil were in the club, we got used to the whoosh of his sports car as he bowled into a ‘meet’ and knew that Neil would help out willingly wherever he was needed.

Sorry, I’ve jumped ahead of myself! In 1969, Neil, a New Zealander, married Unni, who had emigrated from Norway to New Zealand. It was Unni and her family who introduced Neil to Orienteering (Unni is a very experienced Orienteer who has competed for NZ). As well as being heavily involved in their local Orienteering club, Neil was manager of the NZ team to Norway in 1978 and served as treasurer of the NZ national body. In 1972 he was the course setter for the NZ Orienteering Championship on a map that he had made, the first map in NZ to have contours!

Since returning to live in NZ in 1985, Unni and Neil have been back to Scotland several times to visit Bjorn and his family, who had settled near Oban, and each time they returned to Aberdeen and took part in local events. They stayed with us on some of these occasions, the last being a couple of year ago. We remember him helping some drivers of 4x4 vehicles (café tractors, as he disparagingly referred to them) to get out of a muddy parking field near Braemar.

In November 2009, Neil lost his 4 year battle against skin cancer. Not only will Neil be dearly missed by his wife Unni, his three children and eight grandchildren, but also the Orienteering fraternity of New Zealand and those of us in Scotland who knew him.

And it’s au revoir to the Lovies for the foreseeable future as Eric has a new job in Singapore and they’ll be moving out there very soon. Good luck guys and maybe we’ll see you as international competitors at the 2011 6 Days?

HOW DOES THE ORDNANCE SURVEY WORK?

Ewen sent me this link to a video clip on how the OS works:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeVQs6-v8oQ&feature=related

Once you’ve watched that, there are other links to related clips you can follow but I particularly liked this one from British Pathe about the OS in1953:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTt0cgOO_ag&NR=1

Maps at a scale of “3 bus lengths to the inch”? Way to go!

As before, I’ll leave copies of these links on the website bottom right to save you typing these in.

DEESIDE NIGHT CUP

Despite the deep snow and dodgy roads, Part 2 of the 2009-2010 DNC series kicked off on the 6th at Dess. The area lies on Jon Musgrave’s doorstep and the Dess DNC event is always a bit of a special as he uses the house as registration and cranks up the sauna and lays on soup for afterwards.

This year was even more special. Their house is up a steep track only passable by 4x4 in the snow so, showing true dedication to the sport, he and family spent an afternoon digging out a layby on the main road below and then piste-bashing a route from there up to their house. Jon then kept up a steady stream of emails letting folk know the state of the roads and enticing them to make the journey. Those that did had a great time playing a sort of realtime RouteGadget, being able to clearly see previous runners’ route choices on the ground as they tried to avoid the open areas where the snow was lying 2 feet thick!

David Kirk on the DNC blog: “DESS DNC 09/10 - A great unique experience which I won't forget in a hurry. It was made all the more surreal by Post-O-Prattle in the sauna afterwards, before re-entering the white groove to get back to the layby. Thanks Jon for laying the courses in such conditions, encouraging us out, and opening your house to us all.“

There are two courses – Long ~4-6 km and Short ~2.5-3.5km - both as technical as possible for the area and with no concessions to the dark so not suitable for beginners. If you can handle a Green course then you should be OK.

Starts from 6pm, courses close 7.30pm (although some organisers may change these times and will post details on the DNCblog site accordingly - http://grampblog.blogware.com/blog.) Dress warmly, take a head torch and spare batteries, check the Gramp/Maroc websites in case of bad weather. There’s usually a nominated pub for afterwards and there’ll be the traditional DNC curry on the last night.

Headtorch hire is available - first come, first reserved. Contact Sam Gomersall for GRAMP torches, £2 per hire.

Contact GRAMP DNC Co-ordinator Rod McGovern for any other info.

CRATHES LOOPS

A few of our Gramp juniors ventured out on a cold, wintry December morning for the novelty Crathes Loops event which involved navigating round a series of ever decreasing circles.

Special mention goes to Lachlan Kirk (M10) who took a big step up and doggedly defeated the Medium Loops, while Struan Kirk and Josie Gomersall whizzed round the Short course.
