TNRD declares stateof local emergency

Due to the flooding in Beautiful NicolaValley - North (TNRD Area “M”), theThompson-Nicola Regional District de-clared a State of Local Emergency, 8pm onMay 8. This declaration provides theTNRD with the authority to performemergency works within and around wa-terways, including constructing or plac-ing erosion protection works or floodprotection works when an emergency isdeclared. It also permits the TNRD withthe authority to clear obstructions frombridges or culverts. It will remain in forcefor 7 days until May 14. TNRD Emer-gency Operations Centre: 1-866-377-7188.

Nicola Lake & River flooding expectedNicola Lake is currently filling at a

rate in excess of 100 cubic metres per sec-ond, which is 40% more than the previ-ous historical maximum, and the lake isrising 24cm/day. Lake levels are pre-dicted to rise approx. 1.3m above the cur-rent elevation, likely leading to watergoing through the emergency spillway.Overbank flooding in Merritt and areasdownstream along the Nicola River willoccur as well. Property owners along thelake and river are encouraged to moveany equipment away from the water.And keep children & pets away fromdangerous banks & fast flowing water.

Special weather statement for NicolaEnvironment Canada has issued an-

other weather warning for our area: Rainand possible thunderstorms beginninglate Thursday over the Southern Interior.

A developing cold front will stall overthe Southern BC Interior late Thursdayand begin to transition out of the area onFriday. Rain and the threat of thunder-storms are likely beginning late Thursday.

This weather situation combined withspring snow melt will lead to rising riverlevels and may increase flooding — again.

BC Liberals win FRN,minority government

The preliminary voting results frominitial count last evening, show encum-bent BC Liberals candidate Jackie Tegartre-elected in our riding. The NDP’sHarry Lali was just over 700 votes be-hind. BC Green Party’s Arthur Greengarnered 16% of the vote (up from 9.7%in the last election in 2013). Michael Hen-shall of the Social Credit Party got 3.93%.Of the 38,638 eligible voters in Fraser-Nicola, only 14,565 voted — just 36.6%.

Final voting results will not be avail-able until after the conclusion of finalcount, which will commence on May 22.
