LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

There is something really magical that happens when you create space in your life to map out what you really want to manifest. Your dreams instantly start to spark a deep conversation within yourself and then with the Universe that says you’re ready for action and then things begin to happen. After a long season (and I do not mean in the traditional sense). I knew the time had come for great partnerships in all areas of my life. This is a continued process by the way. For me, it is this: Make peace with what you leave behind

and bless the truly amazing person it’s made you. Appreciate the people and lessons you’ve been given and walk boldly into your future with love, gratitude and a new intention. You’re right where you’re supposed to be.

I made the plans and set out to find the right people, places and things. I set my intentions high and prayed and gave it over to the Universe and my God. Things shifted. I found new answers by way of new work in different areas, new learning experiences, new health and well-being and lastly new partnerships. I welcome it all and I am happy to introduce you to my new partner and editor in our company Women of Worth Media Group- Sarah Martin.

I met Sarah quite a while back and watched her grow and take on Delray and various projects. I liked her then and I love her now. She is smart. That is a good thing, And she gets it- full of ideas and hope that tran-spires into doing. We complement each other in really good ways – me, the New York City girl and her – The Southern one. We plan on bringing you the partnerships, events, ideas and love for what we do – to comple-ment what you are doing, where you are going, and who you want to become. Giving you resources, ideas, platforms and touchpoints to make a big difference, to live life better, do better and be better.

Move forward with purpose. xoxo

and the real unsung heroes of today. I congratulate all of you that push forward in your lives…meeting every challenge with solutions….and just being amazing.

It is with great excitement that I now get to celebrate women and their successes through this publication. Helping to guide you during your struggles and inspiring you in your lives with engaging articles, featuring inspiring women, creating opportunities for you to engage with one another and learn from one another….and sometimes….to just let lose and enjoy life.

It is not by accident that I have always had a strong will to explore and push the envelope in life. I was surrounded by strong-willed women….entrepreneurial women….intelligent women…. women with southern hospitality….and women that know how to have a good time. These women have instilled in me the strength to take risks and taught me that life is about continual growth, develop-ment and taking the time to relish the moment. I continue to share these virtues with my two daughters to this day.

Now, God has provided this opportunity for me to connect with the women of Palm Beach County and I can’t wait to meet you all!! As I always say, “Life is an Adventure….make it epic!” So go for it…risk it. Don’t ask “What if?” Just enjoy the adventure and make sure to tell me all about it! We might even see you in the magazine!

If you’re like most women I know, you look in the mirror from time to time and use your hands to push your face back up to where is used to sit a few years ago. . . . we all do it! We’ve probably all secretly wished we had some invisible tape to keep our jawline and neck in place—am I right!? I hear this complaint often in my office!

Page 10: Nicole’s Gallery and Boutiquenkcgenhope.org/WP2016/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/NEWS... · 2016-06-03 · procedure is a great choice for people who want to maintain the tightness

agging skin on the lower face along the jawline (or jowling) and upper neck (commonly termed the

“turkey neck”) is commonplace and one of the first signs of aging. Traditionally, this dilemma was managed surgically with a facelift. While we plastic surgeons certainly still perform this surgery, we are constantly innovating in our field and patients are becoming more savvy, requesting minimally-invasive surgery and non-surgical interventions more and more often. In fact, when you look at the statistics on procedures in the cosmetic field, non- surgical procedures far outweigh surgical procedures--89% of the 15.6 million cosmetic procedures in the United States in 2014 were non-surgical or minimally-invasive!

The main push for non-surgical and minimally- invasive surgical cosmetic intervention stems from the desire for smaller incisions, no incisions, shorter recovery periods, etc. It’s a completely reasonable, exciting, and fun progression in the field of cosmetic medicine! My personal favorite recent innovation in the field is called Necklaze and treats those problem areas we talked about above—the sagging skin of the lower face and upper neck. This minimal-ly-invasive surgical procedure uses a special side-firing laser to tighten the skin in the area of concern without having to actually cut it out. While it is perhaps not best suited for people with severe laxity that really need a facelift, it will give you a spectacular skin tightening,

Take my patient Karen (name changed)—she was a sweet woman in her 60’s, traveling and having a good time in the prime of her life but came to my office complaining of her face looking aged with jowls and a “turkey neck” and wanted help! My initial recommendation for her was a facelift BUT that was a no-go—she had no interest in having anesthesia, a facelift scar, downtime during her recovery, etc. So…now what?!

S

Page 11: Nicole’s Gallery and Boutiquenkcgenhope.org/WP2016/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/NEWS... · 2016-06-03 · procedure is a great choice for people who want to maintain the tightness

lifting, jawline definition, and sharpening of the angle between the chin and the neck. The procedure is a great choice for people who want to maintain the tightness of their skin, have mild/moderate laxity, or have more significant laxity but aren’t a candidate or don’t want a bigger surgery such as a facelift. It won’t get you facelift results if you have significant laxity, but nonetheless it’s pretty amazing for such a small, tiny scar!

I start the procedure by marking the areas of skin laxity and important landmarks on the face and neck. My patients are then given numbing medicine with a few small injections so that once numbed, there is no discomfort during the procedure. I then make a few tiny (1-2mm) inci-sions in areas to allow access for the laser fiber to be placed under the skin—in the crease in front of the ears, just behind the ear lobes, and just under the chin—spots that heal beautifully and once healed, no scars can be seen. I then run the laser beneath the skin to melt the extra fat under the chin (“turkey neck”) and then turn the laser toward the skin to heat the skin from the inside out in all treatment areas. Your skin temperature is constantly monitored during the treatment to ensure the skin is heated enough to get a tightening response, but not too much. This heating process causes a controlled thermal response in the skin with increased collagen, elasticity, and thickness. The extra fat below the chin is then removed with a tiny bit of liposuction if needed and then the tiny skin incisions are closed with a single stitch in each which are removed in 3 days. The entire procedure takes about an hour and doesn’t require general anesthesia! There is an immediate improvement in the sharpness of the chin-neck angle where the fat was removed and over the next 2-3 months the skin will contract and tighten as new collagen is built and the skin thickens.

The healing time is less than a week with a little swelling and minimal discomfort; rarely some mild bruising can occur. Most people will have some mild, temporary numbness in the treatment area but this goes away within a few weeks and then the tightening begins! Even though the Necklaze procedure is technically a surgery, it is minimally invasive and doesn’t require anesthesia. It’s appealing to many of my patients that don’t want the recovery and scar from a facelift procedure but still want a natural lifting, tightening, and rejuvenated look — it gives us another tool in our toolbox! As you can see from the before and after examples, it can be used for young patients maintain a sharp jawline or to completely lift and rejuvenate to a more youthful look with long-lasting results.

Remember Karen? What happened to her!? She opted to go with Necklaze, because she wanted to look refreshed and more youthful but didn’t want a major operation. I was so excited to be able to offer her an alternative, minimally-in-vasive option to transform her look, restore her natural beauty, and meet her goals—and no need for a visible scar or invisible tape! Stay Beautiful.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

MODERN AYURVEDATHE NEW PATH TO CONSCIOUS, OPTIMAL HEALTH

BY SHIVANI GUPTA

With the New Year in full swing, many people are working tirelessly to stay on track with their weight loss goals. Running. Training. Punching. Fasting. Cleansing. Starving their way to achieve the elusive “hot body” we’re seeing shared all over Instagram.

In 2012, weight-loss was a $20 billion industry with 85 million dieters being women, according to an article on ABC News1. Sadly, I’m not surprised by that statistic because I was one of these women.

In 2009, when I was most fit and active, I worked out six days a week — three of those days in spin class. I had a personal trainer, carb-cycled, and followed a very strict nutritional regimen from my trainer. I was a beast in the gym.

Many friends took notice of my shrinking waistline.

“You look so young, Shivani. Wow, you look hot.”

I weighed 105 pounds on a five-foot frame. I admit I enjoyed the compliments because it meant my hard work had paid off.

Page 15: Nicole’s Gallery and Boutiquenkcgenhope.org/WP2016/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/NEWS... · 2016-06-03 · procedure is a great choice for people who want to maintain the tightness

Months later, as I was running around the house, I slipped and fell down right into the marble floor—hitting the side of my face on the ground. It all happened so fast. My husband helped me examine the injuries and established I had severe bruising and contusion to the orbital area of my face. Worried that I had suffered an orbital fracture—or even worse an ocular globe rupture—he rushed me to the ER. The CT scan of my head showed no fractures and only severe hematoma to the tissues around my eye.

My injury left me in a state of confusion. If I was supposedly healthy, why did I fall?

I overdid myself.

OBSESSED WITH LOOKING LIKE A MAGAZINE COVERIn my aspiration to look like the airbrushed ideal we see on magazine covers, I deprived my body of the nutrients it needed just so I could shed weight fast. I looked amazing on the outside, but lacked vitality on the inside.

Why are we obsessed about our weight?

Why don’t we do the work inside first?

What’s driving us to take shortcuts to our diets and lifestyles?

We live in a hyperconnected world where everything is rapidly moving. The way we consume, the way we live, the way we work... it’s all about instant gratification for us in this day and age. What we own, how we look, who we know…these measurements define our worth and rank in society.

Perfection and unrealistic ideals is the very thing that causes unnecessary stress in our modern world. Living a high-paced lifestyle and keeping up with the Joneses is stress-inducing. Studies have shown that stress causes inflammation in the body. Inflammation causes disease. Science Magazine, in 2013, published an article showing that age-related chronic diseases such as metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative disease have an inflammatory component. The saying “stress kills” is a very real thing.

Page 16: Nicole’s Gallery and Boutiquenkcgenhope.org/WP2016/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/NEWS... · 2016-06-03 · procedure is a great choice for people who want to maintain the tightness

MODERN AYURVEDA FOR OUR IMPROVING OUR MIND, BODY, AND ENERGYModern Ayurveda is a simple and easy way to implement healthy conscious living to your daily routine. Taking care of your body, starting from the inside, in a ritualistic holistic way can help you stay young, healthy, and vibrant.

Since eating a whole food diet is not always 100 percent possible, following morning lifestyle rituals, annual natural detoxes, and taking daily herbs and supplements can help keep our body, mind, and spirit aligned and in balance. For example, high quality turmeric is used as an anti-cancer and inflammation reducer. Reducing your environmental toxins is also important.

Be warned, there are no “quick fixes” as Ayurveda is a way of life rather than a short term intervention. There are also not many “once size fits all” solutions. It takes time to discover the art of living in harmony with nature.

If you feel out of balance with your health, first find out what your dosha is—your natural constitution. Then, follow the Modern Ayurveda Morning Rituals to create a healthy routine in your diet and lifestyle based on the dosha. Finally, add Ayurvedic herbal supplements, home remedies, or mindfulness habits to your day. An Ayurvedic Practitioner can help you assess your dosha and consult you with a personalized Ayurvedic regimen that suits your health and lifestyle goals.

SLOW DOWN AND START FROM THE INSIDE OUTInjuring myself is a lesson I’ve learned and one I don’t want to repeat. That’s why I’ve immersed myself in the Ayurvedic system of healing. Ayurveda, a sister science to yoga, is an ancient and all-encompassing system of medicine that utilizes a number of techniques to help you achieve optimal health.

Ayurveda teaches that health starts from the inside, and radiates outward. If you want to look like a transcendent, youthful and glowing beauty—you’ve got to start from within. The skin is the most external part of the body, but there are so many ways it can tell you if you’re healthy: sun damage, wrinkles, dry or shiny hair, healthy nails, glowing or dull skin, brightness of the eyes, gait, and total energy.

There are so many factors attacking our bodies daily, we need to fortify our bodies to stay strong, supple, healthy, and balanced to stave off any negative factors impacting our organs and systems. Once we get a handle on disease, we can resolve how we feel on the inside to match the outside. The choice to slow down your pace, your thoughts, your life, is a very deliberate one; and, the most important decision you can make.

MIAMI SWIM WEEKA stroll down Collins Avenue could have been mistaken for a Sports Illustrated cover shoot during Miami Swim Week. From fashion shows to standing presentations your ‘Palm Beach Girls’ were there to experience it all.

NIGHTSWIM: Wildfox at the Delano Hotel was the first show we attended during Swim Week. Wildfox premiered their Resort & Cruise 2016 swim collections with a statuesque-like presentation. The Resort 2016 collection premiered with mermaid, unicorn and fairy printed fabrics, as well as beautiful flowers, pastels and lots of mesh fabrics, halters, fringe and zippers. The ‘Palm Beach Girl’ favorite among this line was the Floating UW Mermaid Top in pastel rainbow that Wildfox brought back from the Cruise 2015 collection but in two different prints and a solid. The Cruise 2016 “Wildfox Girls of Beverly Hills” also had stand-outs because of their ‘pop of color’ and flight attendant look. You will see more halters, florals and contrasting bottoms from Wildfox in the future.

MARA HOFFMAN: Mara Hoffman moved into Casa Casuarina (formerly the Versace mansion) for the evening, which served as a flawless backdrop to her newest collection. Pushing the envelope with Moroccan inspired beauty, Hoffman brought her Moroccan understanding alive through the sights and smells she experi-enced in Morocco. This collection is infused with new color palettes, silhouettes, and floral prints. It was boho chic to the highest degree, and we couldn’t get enough of it. Adding versatility, Hoffman added more reversible options with different necklines.

MAXIM: From Mara Hoffman to the Maxim launch party. Maxim debuted their swimwear line at SLS South Beach. Maxim’s first ever collection was inspired by legendary fashion icon, Brigitte Bardot by featuring two themes, “Boho” and “Girl Next Door”, which paid homage to key moments in history led by exceptional women. Maxim’s worldwide debut featured fringe, crochet lace earth tone embellishments. The All-American “Girl Next Door” collection expressed a suited look with sleek solids and seersucker, paired with sophisticated color palettes.

THE COLESCasey and I co-founded NKCGH in 2008 in memory and in honor of our father, the legendary musician and vocalist Nat King Cole, as a response to the nationwide budget cuts to schools’ arts programs. Our non-profit organization provides music education to children with the greatest needs and fewest resources. Funds raised provide musical instruments and equipment, programs, mentoring and scholarships to local government funded, Title 1 schools and community organizations. Our outreach in Florida is Palm Beach, Okeechobee, Broward and Dade Counties, and New York, with plans to expand nationwide.

One of our programs is Nat King Cole Generation Hope Summer Strings at Lynn University which provides funds for a week long summer camp giving elementary students without means an opportunity to receive the highest quality string instruction and private lessons with Lynn conservatory students serving as their mentors and Palm Beach County School District’s music teachers serving as their directors. This June will mark its 5th year in operation.

Our vision is that Nat King Cole’s unforgettable legacy, and now Natalie’s as well, ensures that future generations are given the opportunity to learn and experience the joy of music and the art of creative expression in their lives.

CASEY COLE What are your five tips for women in business?

1. Don’t hesitate. If you’re hesitating because you don’t feel like you belong or you start doubting your abilities, that is you limiting yourself…not reality.

3. Remain determined against all odds.  4. Presentation is everything! Style is key.

Perception is reality...5. You’re not always going to be liked by

What are your five tips for women in business?1. Be seriously strategic™. Prepare and be

present, intently listen, observe, learn and ask questions as opportunities, solutions and your next client or career move are often hiding in plain site.

2. ‘No’ should never be a first, second or third option. When you go the extra mile, it is less traveled and will result in more recognition and value.

3. It’s just not what you say, but how you say it that determines success. In today’s rapid e-mail, text and sound-bite world, it is even more challenging to stand out, effectively engage and encourage collaboration and buy-in, so chose your words, approach and style wisely.

4. Just because someone says so, doesn’t make it so. Today with self-publishing and online courses, anyone can be a self-proclaimed expert, journalist, webinar maven, opinion leader or do-it-yourself proponent so never take claims, advice or referrals purely at face value. Dig deeper; ask about track record and experience, do research, challenge and check references before engaged in both business and personal life.

5. No more ‘handshake’ deals, get everything in writing.

What Inspires you? 1. A challenge. I am energized when partici-

pating or leading client ‘think tanks’ to help create and navigate game-changing solu-tions, launching new brands and revitalizing and re-inventing others.

2. Learning something new …which is why I love the industry I am in! With each new client we explore and engage in new indus-tries, pursue new audiences and maximize relationship-making.

3. Reading biographies on government, business and thought leaders and successful family legacies that share their challenges, opportunities and wisdom, the

‘how’ and ‘why’ of their decision-making and the impact their successes and failures have had on their careers, communities and family life.

What do you do on a day off? What’s that? Even on a day off, I am invigorated and inspired by the world around me and always thinking how I can integrate what I have expe-rienced (from conversations, new relationships made to a new skill or venue/destination visited) to enhance or benefit my business, my clients’ businesses, personal enrichment and family life. A day of pampering is always is in order.

What are some things that people don’t know about you? Love my DVR. Guilty pleasure playlist is diverse, filled with crime and drama series, docu-dramas and biopics- that transport of me out the everyday world for a brain re-boot.

What are your favorite places in PB County?Dining out at Trulucks, Chops Lobster Bar or ‘on the water’ at Deck 54 or Benny’s on the Beach, sitting by the pool at the Boca Beach Club, catching a movie at IPic Theaters, cheering on the Owls or Marmot Boca Raton Bowl teams at FAU Stadium, attending galas to support important health, wellness, education and chil-dren’s missions.

What are some of your favorite things?Love dancing; a great live concert, movie, art show or Broadway production; exploring new travel destinations ‘as a native’ (and sometimes a tourist!). But most cherished ‘fave’ thing is enjoying family time chill-axing at home or celebrating milestones with my husband (and business partner) Jon, our adult sons Matt and Mike, our new daughter-in-law Ariel, relatives, friends (who are our ‘chosen’ family) and our three rescue pups.

1 Sell Yourself. My one universal concept that never varies or

waivers no matter if your sales business is B2C, B2B, retail, real estate, insurance, technology, securities or manufactured goods: selling is not about selling your product or service, it’s about selling yourself. That doesn’t mean that you don’t need product knowledge or that you don’t need to create value to influence the close. But consider this: having an A+ product with A+ product knowledge means nothing if you can’t even advance to the presentation.

First and foremost, you have to think of yourself as your product. What attracts consumers to a product? The packaging, its features, its price, its guarantees. Manufacturers design and market their goods with consumer appeal uppermost in their mind. As a sales person, you have to market yourself in the same manner. You are the manufacturer of your product: which is you. Dress for success, channel confidence and charisma from within, and attract your buyer to you. You have to make an impression. Be unique. Be distinctive. Be remembered or be forgotten.

At trade shows, I’m known as The Suit. Even if the dress code is business casual, I show up in a suit because that’s how I want to be remembered: the guy who always looks profes-sional and is ready to deal with the CEO or the doorman. You know the saying: “You only get one chance to make a first impression.” What first impression are you giving your prospects?

2 Make Your Prospect Comfortable. Frankly, make them like you. There’s

a fine line between confidence and arrogance, persistence and annoyance, being knowledge-able and being a know-it-all. You have to know where and when to draw that line. You have to make your customer want to engage with you and do business with you. Even with today’s online researching and buying trends they will not buy from you if they do not like you and trust you.

Page 35: Nicole’s Gallery and Boutiquenkcgenhope.org/WP2016/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/NEWS... · 2016-06-03 · procedure is a great choice for people who want to maintain the tightness

3 Master “The Art of Asking Questions Without Asking.”

You must make a connection with your buyer. Learn how to get them off the defense and extract as much information as possible so you can assess their needs – without them even realizing it. The best advice I can give new salespeople is to learn how to open up the dialogue and then learn how to listen. Listening is a skill: not everyone is born with the ability to listen. But if you want to learn how to improve your sales skills, learn and practice your listening skills. Next thing you know you’ve gathered all the info you need for your closing arsenal. Now close.

Remember: LISTEN and SILENT are spelled with the same letters. Think about it.

4 Isolate Your Buyer’s Hot Spots.  Create value, create need and create solu-

tions for your potential buyer. In today’s buying cycle the vast majority of buyers have done their online research before they ever speak to a salesperson. They asked for recommenda-tions, they’ve Googled your company and you, and they have decided that they want to hear your pitch. Don’t waste their time: hone in on what is actually important to them and then be prepared to give them the solutions they are looking for, not the pitch you’ve been preparing for months.

That’s not to say you shouldn’t have your big pitch ready: a Sales Assassin is always prepared to change course to meet the buyer’s needs. They know their problem: but you have the solu-tion. A buyer may be very clear that he needs to purchase ABC, but when you hear the problem a good salesperson is prepared to explain why XYZ is the real solution to their need. Don’t confuse this with up-selling: cross-selling is solving prob-lems the client may not even realize he has, or known that you could solve. Refer to #3: LISTEN.

5 Recognize Emotional Drivers and Negotiate Accordingly.

Don’t be so preoccupied with your own goal to reach the finish line that you fail to identify your potential buyer’s signals. You are pitching a product to your prospect to solve their problem – not to solve yours. So when your prospect is giving you clues as to what they may be thinking or feeling, you need to recognize that this is what drives them to make their final buying decisions. In reality, we all know salespeople do have to solve their problems: meeting quota, a family to support, a sales manager watching their every move. But that’s your problem: not your client’s. Once you make your problems the client’s, you’re sure to lose the relationship and the sale. So tune in and negotiate accordingly.

Once you’ve solved the client’s problem, you’re their hero – and you’re their go-to sales rep.

MADE

MARY WONGTHERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT MARY

There is a formidable force in these parts and it is Mary Wong, President of The Office Depot Foundation. One thing that is for sure is that she is a “philanthropic rockstar” who has helped many an individual, group and even our four-legged friends in her role. She is a woman of great passion and vision. Mary’s path to success has not been without adversity which in turn has shaped her to be who she is- a woman with a great heart and brilliant mind with a reputation as collaborator and innovator who will continue to strengthen the community.

As the County awaits the decision on the merger of Office Depot and Staples, this is for certain: Mary Wong will continue on… one way or another as the “difference maker” she has become.

PBWM: Can you name a person who has had a tremendous impact on you as a leader? Maybe someone who has been a mentor to you? Why and how did this person impact your life? I’ve had the privilege of having so many people have a positive impact on my life and it would be unfair to name just one. Having epilepsy and serving in my current position with the Office Depot Foundation, I’ve had many people mentor me over the years. I can share with you a few takeaways: learn what you can. You don’t need to fight every battle. Fight the battles where you can make a difference. Truly understand your values and what you stand for. Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.

PBWM: What are the most important decisions you have made in life? The most important decision I have made in my life is not letting anyone tell me ‘I can’t.’ I had a rough childhood and I grew up with a disability, but my father taught me that I was the only one who could stand in my way. I decided at a young age to do what I wanted to do, go after my dreams and set out to accomplish what I wanted to accomplish.

PBWM: As an influencer, how do you teach others?I believe in teaching others that it’s very important to know what you stand for, know what your value structure is and to stay true to that no matter how difficult life becomes.

PBWM: How do you encourage your creative side? I have been blessed with creative energy. Give me a thought and I can take it and run with it. Creativity in business is needed as much as financial savviness. Businesses today lack creativity. You have to feed it and embrace it.

PBWM: Where do the great ideas come from that you have implemented in your work life? The great ideas I’ve gotten have come from everywhere. I’m open to trying new things. I’ve been blessed at Office Depot and the people I work with. We’ve tried some crazy things and they worked. The other piece is the smallest companies that are started by entrepreneurs have the most wonderful ideas and it’s a pleasure to collaborate with them because they are very hungry to find success and give back. We are constantly looking for those kind of opportunities. So really, the ideas come from many different places, but don’t be afraid to try something out even if it seems crazy but you believe in it.

PBWM: Which is most important to you —mission, core values or vision? You can’t say that one is more important than the others. To say that would be a detriment to your organization. You need all three to be valuable and successful. They are all the foun-dation of being successful. They all tie together. You have to be a very good communicator of all three of them and know how they work together and how to deliver them.

PBWM: How did you get here? By taking an opportunity that was presented to me. When this was presented to me 20 years ago, there was no science to this industry. There was nobody in it. To be on the ground floor of shaping and building philanthropy for a major corporation has been the greatest accomplish-ment in my life and the greatest journey as well. I met the most amazing people, not celebrities, but people in the community who are impas-sioned to make a difference in the world. That’s what it’s all about.

Page 39: Nicole’s Gallery and Boutiquenkcgenhope.org/WP2016/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/NEWS... · 2016-06-03 · procedure is a great choice for people who want to maintain the tightness

Be a Difference Maker.— Mary Wong

PBWM: Where did you grow up? What was your family like? I grew up in Oak Park, IL and in Green Bay, WI. My father was a physician and my mom was a nurse. I have five brothers and sisters. My father was from South America. My mom was from the U.S. It was considered a mixed marriage at the time. It was difficult at times back in those days, especially living in a small town. I got very sick when I was 14 and developed epilepsy. My childhood was never the same after that. It really shaped me as an adult. I come from a very athletic family who loved the Green Bay Packers. I was the weird child, the creative one. I had a job when I was 13 years old working in an art shop, then a clothing store. I was very creative. I always wanted to work in retail. I wanted to be a designer. I got into design school in New York City but it was too big a place for me. I changed gears and went to school in Long Beach and decided to go into business instead of design. I worked at several different companies in retail, then worked for Target for 15 years. I developed the baby and bridal registry at Target.

PBWM: Did you have goals as a child? What were they? Tell us about your childhood? My goal was to always be a fashion designer and go into retail. I also wanted to be an artist. I loved crafts as a kid. I loved drawing and painting. I was very much into sewing and music. I was the hippie child and my family was about business and sports.

PBWM: What brought you to where you are now? I was working for Office Depot and was at a store manager national meeting when I met the CEO of the company. He delivered a jaw dropping speech. I approached him and told him how much I enjoyed it. He called me a few weeks later and said, “Mary, I have a great job for you.” He asked me if I would come take the job even though there was no budget, no staff or the fact that I had no idea what I was doing. I was scared but I took an opportunity and tried it and the rest is history.

Page 40: Nicole’s Gallery and Boutiquenkcgenhope.org/WP2016/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/NEWS... · 2016-06-03 · procedure is a great choice for people who want to maintain the tightness

PBWM: What is a day in the life of Mary like? I wear a lot of hats. I enjoy them. I don’t consider it a job. When I die I get to have this great legacy. All day long I am building relationships with the people who donate to us as well as the people we support through the work of the foundation. When I go home, I have a lot of dogs that I take care of J.

PBWM: What inspires you daily? What inspires me is the work that I do and the lives that I get to positively impact through the work of the Office Depot Foundation. I sit back and reflect on where we are today and where we came from. I’m proud of our accomplishments and they inspire me. We are a small non-profit but we do a lot of big things that improve the quality of life for so many people.

PBWM: What is one characteristic that you believe every leader should possess? Humility

PBWM: What is the biggest challenge facing leaders today? Many leaders don’t realize it’s not about them. It seems very divided out there. It’s about team-work. It’s about gathering your troops around you and working together towards a common goal and creating something bigger than you or your organization.

PBWM: What is one mistake you witness leaders making more frequently than others? There are a lot of leaders who don’t give back within their own organizations, and I don’t mean monetarily. I take great pride in seeing our people growing, succeeding and moving up. Leaders should take great pride within their companies of seeing people be successful. There was a time when staying with a company was a good thing. That’s unheard of today. Loyalty is not rewarded any more.

PBWM: What is the one behavior or trait that you have seen derail more leaders’ careers? Having an ‘I’ mentality instead of a ‘We’ mentality.

PBWM: Can you explain the impact, if any, that social networking and Web 2.0 has made on your organization or you personally? If you want to be anywhere in the 21st century, you need to make social networking a priority and understand it. The millennial group is a huge part of the business structure and they live for social media. No matter if you are non-profit or for-profit, it’s huge for business. Not under-standing it and participating in it can be a huge liability.

PBWM: What are a few resources you would recommend to someone looking to gain insight into becoming a better leader? Take time for yourself. This year I made a pact to do things for my personal development and personal growth. Sometimes that requires a clearing of the mind. Take the time and do the research for what you need, whether it’s a mastermind group, inner-circle with people who inspire you to grow, or group of like-minded people that are committed to helping you move forward. It has done tremendous things for me personally as well as for our organization. Be honest with yourself about what you need to work on, be it social media, finances, or what-ever, and then take action.

PBWM: What advice would you give someone going into a leadership position for the first time? Don’t be afraid to say ‘I don’t know.’ When you take on a leadership role, people think the title means they are expected to know it all. It’s ok to simply say ‘I don’t know.’

PBWM: Do you have any fears? How do you overcome them? You always have fears. I don’t like the word fear though. I prefer to say that we all have obsta-cles that we need to overcome. Whatever the obstacle in your life, face it head on.

Page 41: Nicole’s Gallery and Boutiquenkcgenhope.org/WP2016/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/NEWS... · 2016-06-03 · procedure is a great choice for people who want to maintain the tightness

PBWM: What is your greatest passion? My greatest passion is the impact we make at the Office Depot Foundation. It’s making sure our programs work and are making a positive difference to change lives.

PBWM: How do you relax?I love my crafts. I love my gardening. I love my dogs. I love my rescue work.

PBWM: Give us some insight on you- favorite foods, vacation or places to go, how do you spend a day alone? I love staycations. I love Thai food. I love to try new food. I love Indian food. I’m not a cook. I love my house. To spend a day alone is great to me and very relaxing. I love to spend time in my garden. I enjoy photography. I enjoy writing. I am very fulfilled being around the things I love in my home. I can’t drive because of my epilepsy so I made my home a sanctuary for me. I also really enjoy going to botanical gardens and the Morikami Museum and gardens to get quiet.

PBWM: What advice can you give other women? I used to work until 2 or 3 in the morning. It didn’t make for rich conversation when I made friends and met people. I was tired and in a bad space. I wasn’t well-rounded. Please take time for yourself. Find a hobby. Find something you like to do. Don’t feel guilty about it. You need a work/life balance.

PBWM: What is next for Mary Wong? And how will you get there? We are always building on the foundation. We are always adding new programs and tweaking existing ones to make them better. 2016 will be a very interesting year. We’re excited to announce what we’ll be doing as we finalize our plans. I appreciate everyone who has been and always will be loyal to us. Without your help we couldn’t do the great work that we do every day and help the people we help.

PBWM: What is the best and worst decision you’ve ever made? Best – take this job and move here. Worst – not trusting my inner gut feeling. I’ve realized you’re not going to be everyone’s buddy and that’s ok. Believe in yourself and your instincts.

PBWM: What do you think is the most signifi-cant barrier to female leadership? We, as females, need to embrace and help one another to make it to whatever level we possibly can so we can all be successful. There’s enough room for everyone to be where they want to be. It starts by making changes and being committed to those changes.

PBWM: What woman inspires you and why? Mya Angelo for her thought provoking way. Joan Rivers inspired me for her mindset that nobody was going to take her down. People might not have always appreciated her humor, but she was successful on so many fronts.

PBWM: What will be the biggest challenge for the generation of women behind you? The women of today have forgotten the women of the past. Today, everything has to be faster, but the old way of doing things can work for you. For example, how many people take the time to write a handwritten note? Or when was the last time you sent a real greeting card instead of an email on someone’s birthday? Also, real life face-to-face communication is still very important but often times forgotten. Sit down with people in person. Invite someone into your home. Be focused on real relationship building.

…He is a man that was destined to lead with a warm heart and sure hand. The walls of his Hedrick Brothers Construction corporate headquarters are adorned with awards and accomplishments. However, Hedrick’s demeanor is that of pure humbleness. His pride is in his team.

Over the last 37 years, Dale Hedrick has built some of the area’s most iconic buildings including the first LEED Gold Certified office complex in Palm Beach County. Hedrick does not shy away from a project….impossible deadlines, large scale (60 acre equestrian estate), 155,000 square foot clubhouses or even technology-specific buildings (where they test jet engines!) are what Hedrick looks for in a project. Having completed the historic restoration of both the1916 Palm Beach County Courthouse and the Harriet Himmel Theatre at CityPlace, his company has made an indelible mark on the County.

Hedrick will be the first to tell you that it’s his team – known for their ethics, craftsmanship and technology – who have earned these accomplishments. With a “you earn the right to stay or you earn the right to leave” mentality, he has created a culture of honor in being a part of the company. It is just this type of culture that has brought about their growth. “If the project

construct new projects. It is quite astounding to see the level of detail that is incorporated into the plans. The investment in this service for both Hedrick Brothers Construction and its clients allows for the best possible execution strategy, and to predict and resolve potential issues - all before a building is constructed.

While Hedrick says the he is “reinventing himself constantly,” it is easy to see why he is so impactful as a business leader. Dale Hedrick will leave a legacy for many to experience and many to aspire to become.

Hedrick keeps himself and others accountable by signing a Social Contract that creates and maintains an atmosphere of trust and encouragement allowing for open communication. “Feedback is the breakfast of Champions.” says Hedrick.

Dale Hedrick was born and raised in Palm Beach County. He has built a family, a business and a life that most would dream of….and he did it through dedication and faith. Raising three sons with his beautiful wife Cathy, the family spent many weekends helping them to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Two of the boys are in college studying construction and one is working in the real estate development industry. Before any of them return to work at the company, Hedrick says his sons must have “an adventure to live, a battle to fight and a beauty to rescue.”

While walking around the office introducing Palm Beach Woman Magazine to his team, Dale lights up when he is able to showcase the technology they use to virtually design and

GRATITUDE HELPING OUR CHILDREN COUNT THEIR BLESSINGS

BY MONISHA VASA, M.D.

A perspective of gratitude is one of the greatest gifts we can offer to our children.  Gratitude gives children a more thankful attitude as they move through life, improving their overall happiness and well being into adolescence and adulthood.  Fortunately, encouraging gratitude in kids does not have to take lots of time and effort.

Page 47: Nicole’s Gallery and Boutiquenkcgenhope.org/WP2016/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/NEWS... · 2016-06-03 · procedure is a great choice for people who want to maintain the tightness

1 Make gratitude a family affair:  Children learn by imitation, and are more likely to learn from what they see us do, rather

than what we tell them to do.  Make it a point to incorporate gratitude into your daily routine as a family.  For example, start by telling your children what you feel particularly thankful for as you drive them to school in the morning, or tuck them into bed at night.  They will naturally follow suit.  Moments like these become opportunities for connection and conversation, and help to encourage a daily practice of being thankful.  It is important not to force the issue if they are not immediately interested.  Just continue articulating your own gratitude; you will still be demonstrating an important idea that they will absorb over time.

2 Make gratitude tangible:  It can help  children to be able to visualize the idea of gratitude, in order to make it a more

concrete concept for them.  For example, a fun idea for children is a “Happy Jar.”  As a family, write down on a piece of paper what made each person feel particularly happy that day.  Fold the papers up and drop them into the jar.  They can be taken out and shared at the end of a week, month, or year, as a way to remember all of the pleasurable moments that were experienced over time.  Other ideas include reading children’s books that foster gratitude, or creating a gratitude journal together.

3 Make gratitude simple:  It is helpful to remind our kids that we can be grateful for the simplest of things in life.  For

example, we might point out a particularly sunny day, a delicious strawberry, or a good grade at school.  Although these might seem like simple every day occurrences, the act of noticing the small pleasures in life can help to cultivate joy.  We want to teach our children that we often take important blessings like running water, food, and even our health for granted.  We also want them to learn that, although we can be grateful for “big” moments like trips to Disneyland or a special birthday party, that most often, a meaningful gratitude practice comes from paying attention to the beauty in ordinary moments.

It can be challenging to learn concepts such as mindfulness, compassion, and gratitude as adults.  Encouraging these behaviors from a young age can help provide a strong founda-tion for our children.  The fundamentals of resilience and well being begin in childhood.  Let’s help our children, and ourselves, by sharing the importance of gratitude in creating a happy,

Here are some “Get Grateful Quick” strategies to try with your family:

Spending time on my great-grandmother’s farm in Connecticut made me a pushover for fresh vegetables, homemade butter, fresh eggs, and milk from a neighborhood dairy cow.

Page 52: Nicole’s Gallery and Boutiquenkcgenhope.org/WP2016/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/NEWS... · 2016-06-03 · procedure is a great choice for people who want to maintain the tightness

And it’s not just consumers who have the oppor-tunity to build direct relationships with farmers; chefs at Farm-to-Table restaurants know precisely where their ingredients come from; they are in alliance with the men and women who produce those ingredients: the farmers, the fishermen, the foragers. For the chefs, these relationships are as important as the foods the producers present at the kitchen door.

People who are passionate about food — be they farmers, chefs, or those of us who just love to create delicious, high-quality meals for our friends and families — always seek the best ingredients they can find and use them as creatively as possible. In South Florida, that passion is on display in the restaurants of our Farm-to-Table chefs, who, using a variety of local ingredients, create wonderfully diverse menus featuring Florida favorites, as well as vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free dishes.

These days, I love that the green market move-ment—Farm to Table; Farm to Fork— has taken root here in our home state. We’re lucky to have dedicated farmers producing fine harvests from Florida soil, weekly markets offering us fresh, fresh, fresh foods, and talented chefs crafting farmers’ harvests into delicious cuisines.

Today, local farmers, producers, and food artisans offer pasture-raised meats and poultry, sustainably grown fruits and vegetables, artisan breads and cheeses, and farm fresh eggs and honeys to an increasingly savvy public who have caught on to the value—and flavor—of the high-quality foods produced under the Farm-to-Table banner.

Sure, “Farm to Table” is a buzz-phrase, but the “buzz” is significant. While “Farm to Table” simply means buying food directly from those who are producing it on a very small scale, it has a big impact. “Fresh Picked,” “Fresh Caught,” or “Fresh Served,” local, sustainable, and often organic, these are ingredients that are simply tastier (and healthier) than those that have spent days—or weeks!—traveling in the back of a refrigerated semi-truck.

My great-grandmother’s generation knew nothing but Farm to Table. Their connection with farmers and fresh food was woven into the lifestyle of their era. There really was no other choice. Now, of course, we have a wide variety of choices —and one of them, purchasing from local growers, can make a difference to our communities.

You see, Farm to Table is a movement of relationships. Farming isn’t easy. It’s a labor of love. When you support a local farmer you are supporting a web of community relationships: the farmer, the farmer’s family, all the people the farmer does business with, and even the land that the food is produced on — all of these are part of the network you enter when you purchase directly from a local grower.

CAFFÉ MARTIER

This comfortable, quaint sidewalk café, now adjacent restaurant and late night “Speakeasy”, is in the heart of bustling downtown Delray Beach and has the “it factor.” A cozy hang for coffee and light bite or a slip in the back door and up to the bar Speakeasy (back in prohibition times this address had the real deal) where the bartender will remember your name and your drink or make you a new one. Craft cocktail lovers take note: They have some serious mixology going on here.

The restaurant is Kosher, says operator Eli Kamholtz. Martier came by way of the coffee shop/bakery once located in the boutique of the same name that is connected to the restaurant. Kamholtz is finding his way amongst the eateries and restaurateurs along Atlantic Avenue. He has good ideas and we think with a few tweaks, success will follow.

The food is good. We got off to yummy start with our appetizer: the just right bite of avocado bruschetta: chopped avocado drizzled with lemon juice and olive oil, served on bread with a delectable crunch. The nicoise salad is divine, I would come back again and again for this salad. The flatbread is different on lavash and we would consider that and the salad a great share. We also tried the snapper, which was superb. It was cooked perfectly with roasted squash and brussel sprouts. We finished with a creative craft cocktail from the amazing mixologist. Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Late Night, Martier does it all and there is something for everyone.

We walked in and felt like we were in NYC.

I have my standards and places I love in NYC like a seat at a couple of upper east side establishments. This could be Boston, Chicago or Philly right here in Boca. The bar was full, the live musician was singing, Frank’s Summerwind (always a good sign for me) and I could smell the sauce. Perhaps most impressive is that the place was full and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. The manager was making the rounds- people were smiling, others were dancing and toasting to each other. Yep this New York City girl really could have found her place.

Merlino’s in Boca Raton embraces that family kind of Old World Italian tradition. Besides the wonderful chopped salad, we had to go for the meatballs and sausage with broccoli rabe for an app. Wait, is my Mom in the kitchen? Yep, they are that good, tasted just like hers. So much so that I had to get an order to go to bring her so she could verify this. And the sausage- straight from Maglio’s in Philly. Homemade with love and respect. So far so good.

We carried on- toasting ourselves with some great wine from the list and ordered our entrées, veal milanese – so good and so much we had enough to go. The spaghetti carbonera was downright superb that I cannot wait to go back and order it again! And the special gnocchi of the night. This is how pasta was meant to be made. The other dishes we tried we loved as well- pan-seared bronzino, chicken cacciattore, veal-South Philly style and the rigatoni with Sunday gravy.

Make room for dessert even if you have no room. No one can resist a cannoli or the pizelle gelato sandwich. You can dance it off as the music continues and the night carries on. We loved it at Merlino’s and for these parts it does not get any better than here.

SHOULD I HIRE AN ATTORNEYWHEN CLOSING A RESIDENTIAL HOME SALE?

BY RENEE MARIE SMITH

Before we begin, I want to disclose to the reader that I have practiced law over 19 years. Some would claim my profession makes this article biased towards using an attorney when buying or selling a home. However, it is actually the alternative. It has been my experience when buying and selling my own real estate that has made me biased towards using an attorney and why I decided to specialize in real estate law. Mistakes are the best teachers. Let me share two “educational” situations that occurred about twenty years ago which prompted me to become a homeowner advocate.

The old adage says, “Learn from your mistakes or better yet learn from the mistakes of others.”

Page 57: Nicole’s Gallery and Boutiquenkcgenhope.org/WP2016/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/NEWS... · 2016-06-03 · procedure is a great choice for people who want to maintain the tightness

When I was a newlywed, my husband and I decided to buy our first home. We were excited at the prospect of owning and quickly hired a real estate agent. Soon we found a dream property but that is when the story turned into a nightmare. We listened to the real estate agent who felt having legal counsel was not needed. “Save your money,” she said. We proceeded with an inspection only to discover that the home had tens of thousands of dollars in needed repairs and that exceeded our budget. Scared we tried to cancel the contract. The seller refused and we ended up in court. In the end we lost over half of our escrow deposit to fees, costs and paying the seller. We did buy a home but much smaller than planned as we had lost most of our down payment to this process.

Next, several years later, I bought a condo-minium as an investment property. About 4 months after closing, I was served with foreclosure papers which was shocking as my mortgage was current. I learned the closing agent had paid off the equity line but did not confirm it was closed. The seller then continued to use the equity line, even after I owned the property. He stopped paying the monthly equity line payments when he had drawn the whole amount again and no longer needed it. Luckily I had title insurance to handle the situation but I learned that trusting real estate agents and title companies to look out for my interests was a risky game.

Florida allows the consumer to choose if they want to use an attorney when closing a trans-action. Since 2000 when I began specializing in real estate, I have witnessed more real estate sale disasters avoided when buyers and sellers use attorneys than when they do not. The most positive effect, however, being when attorneys are involved, sales actually close more smoothly even if issues arise during the transaction. Thus the parties are more likely to end up at a closing table instead of a court house. Which of course is why both parties entered into the contract to begin with.

1 Attorneys are held to a higher standard, monitored by the Florida Bar, and their only

function or motivation in the transaction is to protect you. They are 100% on your side.

2 Title companies cannot resolve legal issues. Title companies do not say it but buying a

home is a very complex legal transaction. From the contract entered into to buy the home, the addendums needed to clarify transaction issues, ownership rights effected by how title is trans-ferred and taken, or the resolution of issues that may exist after closing are all mini legal matters under the umbrella of a residential home sale. Each sale has three to as many as five different parties with completing interests. Only a lawyer can adequately monitor this legal maze.

3 Every transaction has different legal variables that make each sale unique such

as: out of town seller or foreign buyer, property sold with an existing lease, property inspection finds damages or needed repairs, title issues created by a death in the family, etc. What docu-ment best protects your interest? Which deci-sion is right for you? And if you make one choice over another, what legal impact or exposure do you face? Only a lawyer can tell you.

4 Home buying/selling strategy is dissem-inated by co-workers, family, real estate

agents and the media on how best to buy or sell your home as an investment. Most times I found this strategic advice is wrong for that home-buyer or owner because though well meaning, it does not take into account the specific outcome desired in that sale or purchase. For example, many short sale sellers declared bankruptcy on the advice of a real estate agent or friend when that expense and damage was not needed or a buyer followed a compelling the TV show’s direction on making money in real estate only to find “flipping” a property had greater risks than he knew. Remember there is not one solution for everyone and the show’s host does not know your property or situation to tailor advice to your needs. Hire an attorney to clarify the advice you receive from others on what will result in the best outcome for you. Only an attorney working with you is 100% on your side to make your investment a success.

So to answer the question, “Should I Hire an Attorney when Closing a Residential Home Sale?” here are my top four reasons.

DAY TRIPPING ORLANDO

BY SARAH MARTIN

The sun has blessed you with it’s warm hands,

You have flown so high and so well,

That God has joined you in your laughter,

And set you gently back in the loving arms

of Mother Earth.

Known as the “Theme Park Capital of the World”, Orlando is filled with experiences that will delight all ages. Follow our Palm Beach Woman Magazine Editor, Sarah Martin, and her family to “The City Beautiful” to discover quite a bit more than you would anticipate.

Just 2 1/2 Hours away, the trip to Orlando is a short ride with newly renovated Visitors Centers that make stops along the way feel safe, entertaining and pleasant.

DAY 1CIRQUE DU SOLEIL-LA NOUBAwww.cirquedusoleil.com/la-nouba

Cirque Du Soleil is a must! After settling in at our hotel, we took a quick ride to Cirque Du Soleil. It was a sophisticated performance dotted with French humor. The entire crowd was mesmerized by the technicality and heart-stop-ping moments. The show is filled with artistic backdrops and unbelievable acrobatic feats that dazzled all ages. The show is conveniently located at Disney Springs and features tram-poline performers, aerialists and cyclists. Trust us… there is no bad seat! The details and the movements of the performers change seam-lessly… it is a feast for the eyes and a show that could be seen over and over again.

DAY 2ORLANDO HOT AIR BALLOONSwww.OrlandoBalloonRides.com

(407) 894-5040

It is 5:00 am and we have traveled with a crew and other guests to reach our destination…a field covered in fog. The crew prepared a rather large basket that can hold approximately 16 people plus a captain. After everyone jumped into the basket, the captain began to enter-tain the passengers with his quick wit. With an unbelievable smoothness, the basket lifts off the ground and everything began to get smaller and smaller. The views were magnificent. The feeling of the hot air above was exhilarating and all the while it was incredibly peaceful. The landing was as smooth as possible with the help of a well-versed and passionate crew. Following the landing, passengers are asked to assist with deflating the balloon which is fun for both kids and adults. To round out the entire experience, the crew celebrates with a champagne toast and recites the most beautiful poem…..one to definitely remember.

DAY 3DISNEY-MAGIC KINGDOMwww.Disney.com

We awoke at an early hour and headed to Disney’s Magic Kingdom. While our youngest child is well beyond the need for a stroller, we still bring one along so that we have an easy place to pack extras for the day. Once we were inside the park, we were truly on a search for the “secret” experiences that exist through the entire park. After traveling some of the back “alleyways” of the park, we came upon a gentleman who asked us if we needed help. He then proceeded to give us a map and series of playing cards called Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom. We had to use the map to find our first starting point. Once there we were able to play a game with surprise animations that appeared out of windows and other hidden locations. We met others playing the game along the way…and in the true Disney spirit, they shared various cards and traded cards with other players. We had found just the experience we were looking for!

After getting our fill of Space Mountain, Splash Mountain and the (NEW) Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Roller Coaster, we then made reservations at the Floridian for dinner, rode the Disney Monorail to the hotel and walked down to the water where we were able to catch the Holiday boat parade followed by the most amazing fireworks show (it was for the holidays!). Lastly, while enjoying the orchestra on the second floor, the lead musician caught wind that it was our youngest daughter’s birthday. He then led the orchestra and every single person in the entire Grand Floridian lobby to sing “Happy Birthday” to her. It was the most magical moment. Absolutely unforgettable!

DAY 2WILD FLORIDAwww.wildfloridairboats.com

(407) 957-3135

Following a day in the air, we ended the day on the water. A short scenic ride just on the outskirts of Orlando sits a well built and professionally run airboat ride company. With options to ride in a group boat or your own boat with a private tour, we suggest the private tour. Arrive early so you can enjoy the animal exhibits, feeding exhibitions and the care for the menag-erie of exotic and native wildlife. The airboats are exhilarating yet so peaceful. Moments flying through water onto land and back again, dotted with instantaneously silent moments where we could observe the birds, alligators and sunset. Our captain/guide was incredibly knowledge-able….really giving it every effort to provide us with a full tour of animals. The whole family was pleasantly impressed with the experience and are looking forward to returning.

DAY 4LEGOLANDwww.florida.legoland.com

877-350-5346

Being greeted with LEGOLand’s theme song “Everything is Awesome”, you know the day is going to be great! Immediately upon entering you are surrounded by large (REAL) LEGO sculptures with water displays and more. The rides are just the right size for fun for everyone! While the water park was closed for the winter season, we look forward to heading back to see the entire back of the park.

We stopped by one of the gift shops to build our custom LEGO character. As we traveled throughout the park, our family was reviewing all of the staff’s badges so that we may trade all or part of our LEGO character with them. There are also kiosks where you are encouraged to trade out various parts or the whole character to make your ideal LEGO person!

Recently, LEGOLand added the new LEGOLand 4D Movie Experience at the Wells Fargo theatre located within the park. It is a full sensory 4D experience with fast moving wind, water, fog and more! You become a part of the story as well! You just have to see what “Risky Business” is up to!

The park has plenty of activities throughout the day including character meet and greets, high-flying rides and smaller rides for the little ones as well. Over 50 rides, shows and attrac-tions are available to enjoy with your family.

Conveniently located adjacent to the park is the LEGOLand Resort which offers themed guest rooms with surprises throughout-hidden All the characters meet the guests each evening for the famous LEGOLand pajama party with DJ and LEGO’s galore!

She led the charge amongst her fellow Commissioners to approve Christo’s Surrounded Islands project that shined the global spotlight on Miami as an arts destination. Ruth Shack sponsored the County’s first historic preserva-tion ordinance, and urged reconsideration by municipalities to recognize the value of their historic resources, including South Beach’s Art Deco District.

A HISTORY-MAKING LEGACY THAT CONTINUES TODAYRuth Shack has been honored for her contribu-tions in a remarkably broad set of fields. She has received the highest award for her commitment to civil rights by the ACLU; to philanthropy by Leave a Legacy and The Association of Fund Raising Executives; to leadership by the Miami Foundation, to the humanities by the Miami-Dade Public Library System; to human rights by the LGBTQ Task Force; and to the arts by the Knight Foundation.

Her service has included serving as Vice Chair of the Council on Foundations and Chair of its Management Committee; on the Board of the Community Foundations for Youth; and the Board of Funders Concerned about AIDS.

She is a member of the Bertelsmann Founda-tions’ Transatlantic Community Foundation Network and was Chair of the Communications Network. She was a Founder and former Chair of the Florida Philanthropic Network and Found-er-Chair of the Alliance for Human Services.

Along with her late husband Richard Shack, she has supported, through the 60 years during which she has lived in Miami, many emerging artists and served on Boards of nascent artistic organizations and community art centers. Together they developed one of the area’s most significant art collections.

Shack served as President of the Dade Community Foundation, now known as The Miami Foundation, from 1985-2009 where she spearheaded the campaign to foster philan-thropy and charitable giving by developing a permanent endowment to meet Greater Miami’s emerging charitable needs.

Her legacy continues with the “Ruth and Richard Shack Society” recognizing the Foundation’s most generous philanthropists. Each year, The Miami Foundation and Leave a Legacy present the “Ruth Shack Leadership Award” to one of Miami’s most promising young leaders of today.

You.Are.Amazing.

As. you. are.

Stronger than you know.

More beautiful than you think.

Worthier than you believe.

More loved than you can ever imagine.

Passionate about making a difference.

Fiery when protecting those you love.

Learning. Growing. Not alone.

Warm. Giving. Generous.

Quirky. Sexy. Funny. Smart.

Flawed. Whole. Scared. Brave.

And so, so, so.much.more.

Be Strong. Be Confident. Be You.
